GSM Pre comes with tethering instructions, no actual tethering ability 11
With the GSM Pre falling into the hands of anxious Germans as I type, we’ve found out that the Pre in Germany wants to provide support for Bluetooth tethering, at least if you ask the Help app:
Use Phone as Modem
If you use your phone as a modem, you can access the internet with your computer independently from your location as long as you have coverage. Ask your mobile provider whether you can use this function with your contract.
After that are instructions on how to set up your phone and computer for tethering. Unfortunately, it seems that all you get are instructions, as following said instructions and pairing with the computer only gets you the standard bluetooth services we've come to know on the Pre. But... it is one more step towards a land of tethering, now all we need is for Palm to flip the metaphorical switch.
Thanks to Carsten for the tip!

this is a step in the right direction. Hello legit tethering? Although this would also lead to additional charges from the carrier I'm sure.
I do not think that there will be extra charges ... at least not at the german carrier o2. In germany o2 has the exclusiv distribution of the pre though they hand some devices out to resellers. They sell it without sim lock. You are free to use it with any carrier you want. At the moment there is the problem that the current webOS has no option to configure specific profiles and the pre only has profiles for the big four carriers in germany on board.
I myself use it with an o2 contract for which I have two sim cards so I could already put one card in an UMTS USB stick and use my data package with pre and the stick.
I get the feeling that it has always been possible but that it wasn't encouraged by the carriers. Kind of like how Windows Mobile had internet connection sharing by default but some carriers removed it and left it to ROM cooks to put it back in.
Yes, it is currently possible. Canadians that have Bell as their carier get tethering via BT by default.
Okay, so let's say Palm flips the metaphorical switch. Doubt it, but just pretend for a minute.
... I'm gonna want to remove MyTether, right? How the hell does one do it? Will "orange button + tap" be enough? Thanks.
If you have sprint this won't happen so you dont have to worry about it .
Who cares?
Mytether has allowed you to do this for months!
And orange tap will work to delete the app, Im not sure if there is a service associated with mytether or not, but if there were you would delete that too.
So tethering is or isn't possible? I have Sprint
I thought some Canadians said that Bell allowed tethering on the Pre. Can anyone confirm that, eh?
Yep, tethering via BT is enabled by default if Bell (Canada) is your carier.
I would love to have the ability to tether without the hassle.
