Help Palm out: suggest a mascot! [Contest] 141
Our friends at Palm have put out a call for suggestions for a mascot, so let's help them out, so we no longer feel jealous about that charity auction for a plush version of the Android logo. What we need is a webOS mascot, per Palm's tweet:
So how about it, PreCentral readers? What would you suggest as a mascot for Palm (keeping in mind the rejected octopi or trademarks caveats)? Let's see them! We'll pick five favorites, put them up to a vote, and give the winner a $50 coupon to the PreCentral store! Photoshop submissions are welcome; send your images to contest@PreCentral.net.
We'll also be sure to let Palm know about this. Maybe your mascot will be chosen for future greatness (and cute animated commercials)!

I had the same idea, but, well, I don't know that I need a bigger head ;)
Though @Adora seems to disagree with me about this, I think that it should be an alien, of the Mars Attacks variety, with a big brain and lots of cool gadgets. For obvious reasons:
1. Aliens can take down Robots (*ahem*) pretty easily (Again, Lisa thinks a Ninja would be better... but whatever...)
2. Aliens are smart, much smarter than anything else on this planet.
3. Aliens have lots of cool gadgets that are futuristic and fun! (like the dreaded 'Skin Melter' or 'ZapRoom')
4. Aliens have been known to blow the minds of onlookers (literally and figuratively).

the spaceship can be a palm powered pdQ... Landing on a business meeting in 1999. Mascot can jump out and plant a palm flag....fast forward to the future " WEBOS"...revolutionizing biz once again.. 20yrs later. Ubiquitous computing...show the vision of webos to the masses.

For the record, the original Palm Computing mascot (from way back when, before being acquired by U.S. Robotics in 1995, then 3Com in 1997, and then ...) was Sheldon the palm tree, as mentioned in the book "Piloting Palm" by Andrea Butter and David Pogue. For those interested in Palm history, Piloting Palm is a great read.

The mascot should be a sailboat and in the logo a giant squid will be crushing the boat. But the boat is still the mascot.

How about a little orange guy dressed as a Pilot? Pilot is still a word thats very associated with Palm in a lot of people's minds.
Or if we go for non-cartoon ads, some really awesome Pilot-dressed guy. Slightly older, but with tons of wit and charm. Facial hair is a must.

He's the pilot, and he shows people in the ads what they can accomplish with their phones.
I suggested Janus. From Wikipedia: In Roman mythology, Janus (or Ianus) was the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings and endings. Kinda fits the interconnectedness that HP is pushing... :) Look it up...
(I know; kinda strange. But a two headed mascot? Not so common...)

Apparently you can buy the image and license it for between $30-$70 on that website. I'd guess that shouldn't be a problem if Palm likes it and it looks really professional.

I would buy if it wasn't so much. I should be able to buy this phone outright for 200$. It may be new to At%t but they need to just get these phones into peoples hands so they have a bigger following when the new phone comes out.

I like the little Palm logo guy on top of this article but add the hat and glasses from the sock puppets and give him a suitcase "Life Moves Fast" makes me think of travel.

I always thought WebOS did so poorly because it suffered from the marekting mistake of sounding like a spanish word that doesn't compliment the product. In this case, I thought "WebOS" sounds a lot like "huevos" the spanish word for "eggs". Remember the Chevy Nova? ie "No Va" or "It doesn't go."
On the other hand, maybe a little play on words is what palm needs to differentiate itself.

I know we're brainstorming here, but since we're all on different phases, I'll go toss in some observations:
I'm thinking the whole web thing will mean "slow".. sort of like what an actual web does -- to catch flies. And spiders are just plain dark and creepy. Ever had a friendly spider character before?
The alien idea would be great, as long as it would be "android" great -- cute, unique, and has mass appeal.
App Cat is nice, and should probably work for families and businesses as well... how about a ninja app cat?

Ok, this got me thinking... how about using that Wisp/Glow/Orb in the Palm intro videos as the mascot? It can fly, it's agile, and it could probably do magic. Did I mention that it can fly?

Come on people, isn't it obvious? What did webOS do for Palm? It brought them back from the dead. A Phoenix! It symobolizes that, and since its a bird form, I like to think that it symbolizes freedom of development.
If you were a non-webos user (the target), a phoenix would not make much sense would it?
well a pheonix is still pretty legit and cool looking and ppl do not necessarily have to "get it".. I like the idea.. When I think pheonix I think cool, fast, hot.. But a cool friendly alien might be more relateable to the masses, a pheonix shouldn't really have a personality like an alien can, if they are looking for a "symbol" I'd say go with pheonix, if they want a mascot they can go with alien, but it would be easy to go very wrong and be a bomb, it is a very thin line between cool and cheezy and lame.. The pheonix would be prett straight forward..
I got an idea. How about a walking picture of a company that likes to say there going to do things that doesn't. (adobe flash)(evo 4g and many other things)
How about a platypus? He's cute, starts with P, unique, is a multitasker of the animal world, has WEBBED feet, hard worker.

Assuming that Palm is Palm and not WebOS or HP, I would suggest
-a LEMUR for an animal. It's quick and has human-like hands and palms. Plus it can look cute.
-a NEURON for a non-animal. Although it's not cute, it portrays a connection to multiple items as Palm does with the cloud. It also has a high tech image to it.

I'm goin w/ the Palm Penguin! Actually looking forward to it! Palm Penguin emphesis that WebOS is Linux based and I think that including the Roots of WebOS is pretty cool. Plus Penguins are cute and cuddly and the Tux says Business and Fun all over it! :-D... I'm voting Palm Penguin.

The Palm Thief/Robber Crab is multi-skilled, it's a collector and will consume anything, it's strong, it's amazing to look at, and there's nothing more alien looking.
My wife considers WebOS a thief of time and calls herself a Pre Widow. She gets frustrated when we're out and she goes to hold my hand and finds that the phone happens to be in the hand she chooses to hold.

Clearly he'd need to be cuter than the real thing, but for some reason I really like the crab idea. Some additional points of why he's a good match for webOS:
- he likes shiny objects, like phones with MIRRORS
- he is often a pet or guardian
- being a hermit crab, he can come in a variety of exterior shells while still remaining the same awesome crab inside
- he is delicious
- "...populations in several areas have declined or become extinct due to both habitat loss and human predation" [doh!]

stick figure. With huge rigt hand that says palm , right on the palm of his hand. For commercials he can bbe in like new york and any one in the street with a palm device gets a high five. Any body with out a palm device gets flipped off lol. Or maybe he can facepalm any other devices like an android.
A ninja monkey/hamster/bunny that is in a pose holding a deck of cards in one hand kind of like your hand when you're holding an iPhone but you'd be holding a deck of cards. It's other hand is with it's palm showing you like they had just thrown a card at you. Place him on a cloud (like Dragon Ball Z) with an orange tint to his clothes (naruto)
Sounds like a lot of stuff, but I think it could come off cute and covers all the main points: Palm (ninja's palm), cards (webOS cards), Orange color (palm's color of choice), cloud (webOS cloud services)

2. Alien I originally liked...but then I kept seeing that green alien for Alienware and even if you make it blue or orange, people will still make that connection;
3. I like the Phoenix, and honestly I wanted the new webOS "superphone" to be named that. But it's a complicated image, and would look a lot like Firefox's logo;
4. A big Palm? Ugh. Talk to the hand... :)
5. Spider is great in theory, but others are right - too many find them creepy, and no matter how cute you try to make it people will still be creeped out.
I'm voting for a monkey. An orange monkey, to use Palm's colors. A monkey is smart, playful, nimble, quick, can multitask...play off Android's own commercial, that they don't have thumbs. Have a monkey looking for fruit (in a PALM tree...) and rejecting the apples (so what if apples don't grow on palms!) as if they taste bad.
Plus it's a monkey. Who doesn't like monkeys?
