Homebrew App Translator Graduates to the Official App Catalog 38
by Dieter Bohn Thu, 03 Sep 2009 4:15 pm EDT
Take a moment to congratulate Janni Kovacs (aka roar), whose Translator app has made the jump from our Homebrew App Gallery to the Official App Catalog today! It is powered by Google and therefore can work with 45 different languages.
Longtime homebrewers remember when Translator was a wee little pup which could be installed via the email hack method before Palm locked it down.
As with most apps in our Homebrew Gallery, once it's in the Official App Catalog it the ability to download it happens there instead of here, so launch it and give it a shot.
Congrats, roar, and thanks for the great app!

This is a great app! Congrats!
This is awesome for all our homebrew developers! This shows that Palm is really open to any quality app being approved for the app catalog, and not just "specially approved" developers. It's also good because a homebrew app made it in, showing Palm won't discriminate against an app just because it was first made available through "unofficial" means. I'm really liking this company more and more.
They have talked about how much they like the Homebrew Galley to detect new talent. Many have been contacted by Palm here, before they had their app ready and recently submitted or are about to submit.
I'm nothing but pleased with the way Palm is embracing Homebrew. It is required for them to really get WebOS into a viable platform.
Congrats! First bird out of the nest. Hopefully many, many more will follow. Exciting stuff.
This is great, but shows Pre needs to also plan for adding more language input systems, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and etc. This is still an area that iPhone has a clear advantage.
Ignorant won't help Palm Pre becoming better.
BTW, after this I think I figured out a crude way of inputting Chinese or other languages using Translator. Write in English, translate it and then SWAP for cut and paste.
Congratulations! I installed it via email way back when. Happy to see it accepted into the "official" catalog!
Woo hoo! Congratulations!!!!
Baby done grown up. : (
Nice and many more to graduate
Congratulations! Indeed its good to see PreCentral's homebrew area used as a staging/testing area for App Catalog programs. I hope more developers will launch their beta versions here and recognize the power of the large base of testers/commenters that it brings.
Great to see.
I just happened to click on the new apps and saw that janic has graduated!!! I've had this homebrew for sometime and this is awesome news! Way to go roar!
Super happy for ya Janni! Thanks for letting us be a part of your journey here from the beginning! It is a great app! I'm about to make use of it in Puerto Rico if I happen to get Sprint where I'm staying! :)
You shouldn't have any issue getting signal down there. Hell I was able to place calls while in the rainforest last time I went.
Great News. Congratulations to Janni Kovacs. Awesome, useful program. I believe now many other great Homebrew programs will make it as well.
What I don't understand, really, is how/why does Palm chooses to pay more attention to silly butt little dumb programs (please no more news, food searches) instead of bringing up much needed utility programs already in Homebrew. I mean, waste time and space to give us a program that flips a coin?????! (WTF?) When Homebrew has AHS Launcher (Demo now in Homebrew)for example; what a terrific program! How can they choose "flip a coin" over that? I mean, who needs flip-a-coin when you can't associated specific ringtones to alert notifications. I have to erase 50 emails every day, one by one, every day, because Palm can't figured out how to do it in one shot like most email programs, but, oh WOW, in case I don't have a freaking coin, I can now use Flip-a-coin. BFD!
But, there is hope. Janni Kovacs proved there is at least one of the old Palm-managers still making decisions at the new Palm (maybe he came from the Treo's team?).
Hey Dieter, did you use Translator to write this post?
"... [O]nce it's in the Official App Catalog it the ability to download it happens there instead of here... ."
I am glad to see more apps, and even more glad to see a homebrew app graduate!!
Yet, I can already translate through a web site with the browser, there are far more interesting games in homebrew (like WordWhirl) than a lemon stand, and a coin flipper- I won't even comment on that.
Come on Palm... I am sure there is better waiting for approval....
Great app now they need to include voice translation as well.
Congrats!!!!
great app.
Congrats, this was probably one of my fav apps and i'm glad to see it in the app catalog.
