Hotsync for Classic on the Pre gets Video Demo 36

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 02 Sep 2009 10:28 am EDT

MotionApps just let us know that they've got a demo up of HotSync for Classic, which should hopefully be coming soon.

It's not as dead-simple as your traditional USB-based HotSync (which is a bummer), but if you can grab your PC's IP address, you can do Hotsync over WiFi (which is a sweet deal). We're also pretty impressed with the app installation process, which also can happen over WiFi instead of sideloading to a particular directory.

We should note that as with all things Classic - the data you sync here will live only in Classic, you won't be able to use this functionality to get information from Palm Desktop onto your Pre's core apps.

Parsing MotionApp's post a little bit, when they write "While we are waiting for the highly anticipated update from Palm which will bring HotSync support to Classic users," all we're reading is "highly anticipated update from Palm."  We're guessing that means that rather than pushing out a Classic update directly, HotSync support will be rolled into the next webOS update. We also know that webOS 1.2 is out there, hopefully HotSync support in Classic won't be the only feature.

yeah. i wonder how long Motion has had their hands on 1.2 to make this video. I want it too....

grrrr. tell us what else is in 1.2
do we get a decent SMS notification?

To clarify, is Classic now being added *to* WebOS 1.2, or will the next version of Classic be released alongside WebOS 1.2? If it's being added, what happens to users who have already paid to license Classic? Thanks. {Jonathan}

Once WebOS provides all functions currently available on PalmOS, I absolutely agree it's time to move on. Until then, however, Classic's functionality is a huge help for those of us with established PalmOS setups. {Jonathan}

If I use a router in my home network that automatically assigns the IPs to the clients, then I'm out of luck for 'Classic-HotSync'?

Not at all; you just need to check the IP address immediately before initiating HotSync on the Pre. The desktop Hotsync client has an easy way to do that: right-click on Hotsync icon, select Setup, then the Network tab, then select TCP/IP Settings. The relevant IP address is listed under Primary PC Address. Also, as long as your PC stays on and logged into the same router, it's likely to keep the same IP address (or you may be able to set it to a static IP address if needed). {Jonathan}

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately that's what I'd like to avoid. And, frankly, that's much more inconvenient than using the USB cable.
Bluetooth sync would be... ok, I'm dreaming. ;-)
Ok, may be it'll work anyways, as soon as it is out we'll be knowing.

WiFi sync is faster than Bluetooth, at least in my experience, and requires only that the two devices are on the same network (and only the Pre needs to be on WiFi); I can WiFi Hotsync from anywhere in my house, for example, and the same would be true for an internal corporate network. Still, it's clearly a workaround, but one that turns Classic from a geek-only tool (requiring USB drive mode, copying data files for memos and the like from Palm handhelds, etc.) into one that many less savvy folks can utilize. {Jonathan}

The routers I've used all tend to assign the same IP address to each computer/device even after that device resets/logs off. I don't think you really have anything to worry about.

Setting a static IP for your device would be the simplest method, though, to ensure it will always sync. It's super easy to do.

For most users it will be no issue at all. And yes, in most cases the same IP would be re-assigned. Counting on luck, isn't it? ;-)
I already had trouble with a fix IP assigned to the PC I intend to sync the Pre with. He is not always connected to the same network...
In the end it is a question of comfort for me. And most comfortable way using classic might be the USB cable for me.
Let's see how the WLAN connection using the Computer Name will be, though the scanning didn't find anything in the video (ok, doesn't necessarily mean too much).

@{Jonathan}: Bt2 should handle it fine speedwise. For the 'everyday ease of use' I agree that LWAN sync will be more straightforward for most. But also, most will fail if they have to dig deeper than figuring out their IP.

I see - yes it would not work to sync on-the-go, unless an ad-hoc network link can be established between the device and your Pre. I know there's not much info around, but does anyone know if Classic can be synced that way?

Thank you very much for the clarification.
Entering the computer name should work for me to make the feature useful in my case.
Great work in any case!

Man i should be more aggressive on the forums, I posted this over a month ago with questions about updates

granted no video,

and had the post been noticed, it would have done nothing other than serve to glorify my online persona, so nothing lost.

If something like SplashID or SplashShopper work fine for me in Classic, why would I want to pay for a WebOS version? How much added value can there be in putting a shopping list, or a list of my credit cards, into a prettier WebOS looking GUI? I would do that for Agendus but not for other apps. Speaking of, I can't wait until Hotsync comes so that I can start using Agendus again. I have great doubt that the PIM will be considerably improved in a dot release.

The Calendar is not nearly as functional and the Tasks application in WebOS is useless to me. A step has been taken backwards. Hopefully a WebOS update will take two steps forward at some point but in the meantime I have to keep myself organized and the current PIM doesn't cut it. I am just getting by with it.

Ha! It's not that easy...

How about getting Kinoma Player up and running?

That could be very useful. Does this work fine with Palm Desktop 4.1.4e or are you required to use 6.2? Because 6.2 is awful in comparison.

How do I sync my contacts with the Pre. I know they tell you how to do it the first time you use the phone, but how do I do it now? Sprint & Palm are useless! THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS PHONE! I can't wait until Oct when I get the manual I need this info know. I spent ALL day updating all of my contact on my phone & in my palm desk top only to find out despite what Sprint & Palm were telling me I can't link the 2 together. Google, Hotmail, Yahoo are all USELESS!! I categorized all my contacts with pictures for that new app that came out and have no way to link the new with the old.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO PUT THE 3 TOGETHER AND NO LOSE INFO FROM EITHER OR DUBS!

I have to say when I got my Pre last week as an upgrade to my Centro (been using Palm Pilots since 96') and found out I could no longer sync to the desktop I was very close to using the 30 day return trial. The reason I got a PP way back when was to replace my daytimer. I used a third party app (Xtendconnect) to sync my works calendar (lotus notes) with my Palm. Now the new offerings to sync lotus notes all need to go through the web via google. My work has that function blocked and will not change their policy for me. Also the way they changed the memos make them pretty much useless to me.

Now that I've loaded the classic app and got back at least some of the things I really miss chances are good I'll be keeping my pre now so thank you very much for this app. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the hotsync function via either wifi or bluetooth will enable me to sync to lotus notes with my third party conduit. That would make me one very happy camper.

Thanks again,

Peaty

Is there another app which replaces Motionapps' Classic? I noticed that Motionapps's Classic is listed to download from the HP Palm site http://www.palm.com/us/products/software/mobile-applications.html,

Classic
Run PalmOS® apps on your new Palm webOS phone. With Classic by MotionApps, longtime Palm OS users as well as new webOS enthusiasts can get the best of both worlds.2

MotionApps Hands Classic Over to Palm
Source:http://www.motionapps.com/classic/

We are sad to announce that Palm has removed Classic’s ROM from the new webOS 2.0 device ROM which will result in Classic not working if utilized with Palm’s new webOS 2.0.

This is contrary to our agreement with Palm and was done without our approval or consent. Based on this action, MotionApps will immediately stop selling Classic. However, as a courtesy to our clients, we will continue to support existing Classic customers on webOS 1.x for the immediate future.

Be that as it may, we believe in PalmOS and we want to do what we can to help Palm succeed in their future endeavors. So we decided to hand over the entire Classic source code and all of our accompanying IP to Palm so that Palm can do what they want to do with Classic and make it available with webOS 2.0.

Palm now has all the pieces to manage and control Classic's future.

Thank you all who supported us along the way and who love PalmOS the way we do.
