How to move icons around your Launcher and Quick Launch Bar 19

Moving icons on your Palm Pre is a great way to personalize your device and make it more useful for you. I know a bunch of others with a Palm Pre or Pixi, and I was amazed at how many of them didn't realize this was possible or how to do it. Let's take a quick look at how to rearrange your icons.

 How to Rearrange Launcher Icons

  1. In a Launcher page, tap and hold an icon.
  2. Once you see a “halo” appear around the icon, simply drag it to another location. You will see the remaining icons adjust to accommodate the new position
  • Note: To move the icon to another page, drag the icon to the left or right edge of the screen and hold it there for a few seconds for the page to change

How to Rearrange your Quick Launch Icons

Although Palm preloads 4 icons (plus the launcher icon all the way on the right) on your Quick Launcher, that doesn’t mean you need to keep those. In fact, replacing your icons on the Quick Launch is just as easy as moving icons around the launcher.

  1. Before you can add a new icon to the Quick Launch Bar, you must move an icon off of it first. Start by opening up the Launcher.
  2. Tap and hold the icon that you want to remove from the Quick Launch Bar.
  3. Once you see a “halo” appear around the icon, simply drag it up onto a launcher page. You will see that the Quick Launch Bar will readjust the remaining icons to accommodate one less icon.
  4. Within your Launcher Pages, find the icon you want to add to the Quick Launch Bar, tap and hold the icon until the “halo” appears, and then drag that down into the Quick Launch Bar.
  • Note: You can not remove the Launcher arrow icon ( )

Great tips!

Here's another one: use the 'Quick Launch' bar to quickly ferry up to four icons at one time across the 'Launcher' pages to their desired spots.

This is way much easier, quicker and less frustrating than tediously dragging just one icon slowly with your finger as it bumps its way through the crowd of dawdling icons. =)

wow! After eight months on the pre I never realised this! Thanx!

this is a joke that's how you know they don't have anything to talk about in precentral

I bet you have a lot of friends with that positive attitude over there.

If this helps just a handful of people, it's worth it. If you don't find precentral helpful, don't read it.

I wouldn't mind getting a refresher on cool tips that not everyone knows about. I'm excited to see more tips.

@jordan23945bulls

There have been a lot of posts on this recently by new users so it is helpful.

...and there's little news as has been posted 100 times, Palm\HP CAN'T SAY ANYTHING TIL THE MERGER IS COMPLETE!!!

Slow and boring times in Palm land, especially for us Sprint customers. It didn't pay off to be the first.

I disagree.... we had 7+ months of the Pre longer than other carriers in the US... even launch day Pre was better than my old Treo 755p, and now with the new overclocking kernels that help with the Too Many Cards error, I am loving my phone so much! would i like new hardware or some news, of course, but i am still happy with my phone right now!

Agree it did not pay to be first on Sprint We are getting left behind Might be time to droid it up Atleast the Treo had a voice recorder

Is a TAB possible on the PRE? Can't find a reference in the forums..
Tks in advance for the help...

what do you mean? to tab between fields? the only short-cut i know for that is in some of the stock apps (e.g. email, SMS), if you press SHIFT (up arrow) + ENTER, that will move between fields. this will be posted as an official tip at some point, too

Wish you could eliminate the launcher button so you could add another useful icon. It is about as useless as the silver ball bearing button on my Sprint Pre Minus. I never use the launch button, easier to just swipe up.

Pre Minus, haha, that's great! Palm is probably laughing at us: "stupid Sprint first timers". Not fair.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Pre. Just feel shafted by Sprint/ Palm.

Me too.

Often (for me), moving an icon off the launch bar or adding a new one results in a frozen Pre. :(

It'd be nice if there was a desktop application for rearranging icons. Moving things around w/ my finger is a bit tricky, especially when I want to move things around A LOT.

I guess I can do this next time I'm waiting for an oil change, or waiting for the doctor.

Hey, if your wait for a doctor is anything like mine, you ought to have enough time to learn how to develop apps for webOS AND port Docs2Go over to the Pre, AND help Palm get out the next version of webOS including enhanced use of the mic API and bluetooth API. Of course, this is all contingent on your doctor visit NOT being related to carpal tunnel syndrome...

You know, this gave me an idea...if we could get more of the webOS app developers to 'think' they need to visit a doctor, then they would have a bunch of extra 'down time' and come out with even more wonderful programs! Now, how do we plant the idea in their heads? ;)

For those advanced enough to do patching, the Advanced Configuration for App Launcher has another method for moving icons between pages that is much faster over the built in method.

I have tied this and now my Quick launcher is permanently displayed. That blows.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried everything I can think of, even wiped the handset then doctored and it's still happening.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
