How to set up Hotmail Exchange ActiveSync for push email, contacts, & calendar in webOS/Synergy 41
As expected, Microsoft has turned on Exchange ActiveSync for Hotmail users. This means that Hotmail users can now get their email, calendar, and contacts fully pushed out to plenty of mobile devices, including webOS devices.
To program Hotmail into Synergy, just start a new account in email and then punch in your hotmail credentials - but make sure you enter your password incorrectly. That part is crucial, as it will allow you to set up Hotmail manually instead of using webOS's default POP settings. After automatic setup fails, select "Manual Setup."
*Facepalm*. Plenty of folks on Twitter and in the comments remind us: On the add account screen, you can hit the upper-left menu to go directly to 'Manual Setup.' (Thanks everybody!) Then, on the Manual Setup Screen:
- Tap "POP" and switch the account type to "Exchange (EAS)"
- Set the Incoming Mail Server to "https://m.hotmail.com" (no quotes)
- Leave Domain blank
- Set your username to your full @hotmail email address (i.e. include @hotmail.com or @live.com)
- Enter your password, correctly this time.
That's it! You will now be getting all your Hotmail (or live.com mail) pushed out to you automatically and have your contacts and calendar sync'd up via Exchange.
More information from Microsoft here. Thanks to Joe for the tip!

this is pretty cool. now I just want to be able to have all my accounts sync with my outlook 2010. I had to hack it to get my google calendar to work, hope the real update from google come soon. but it annoys me that U can sync my contacts and everything else with my outlook.
Thanks guys this worked great and flawlessly.
you are the best
Don't have to do all that.
Just go to the new account setup in email and pull the Email menu (top left) down. Manual Setup option is in there. No need for the incorrect password and extra step or two there.
instead of entering in your password incorrectly, just bring down the drop-down menu after tapping 'add an account' and select manual setup.
Just set this up and it seems pretty cool.
One thing, though. Through about an hour ago, messages that contained HTML rendered properly (I guess that's the right terminology) on my Pre - images were images, etc.
I removed my Hotmail acct as a POP acct and added it as an Exchange account and when it did the sync all of the old messages showed up as HTML code. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change to get these to show up properly? Or can EAS not show images?
Thanks.
It does this for all EAS accounts as far as I can remember - I used to have my corporate email set up on my Pre via EAS (right up until the IS department mandated that no personal devices can access it), and HTML messages in that account displayed the code, too.
Palm needs to get this fixed.
The problem isn't with Palm.
You will not get HTML mail via EAS because Hotmail is using Exchange ActiveSync 2.5, which only supports plain text e-mail.
Does/Will Hotmail have the option to upgrade to a different version?
That's up to Microsoft.
I hope they're considering it. Seems like Exchange is powerful but does have some limitations.
What version of EAS does WebOS support? Is it up-to-date allowing 14 or 14.1, a little behind with 12 or 12.1, or is it actually WebOS that's alllll the way back on 2.5? It strikes me as more than a little odd that Microsoft would set up their own service on an older version of their own server technology.
It's about time. I have wanted to use Outlook on my DT and my Pre. Now I can do it all with Hotmail and not set up a bunch of workarounds with Yahoo, Google, etc. They all worked with parts, but never as a whole!
Sweet, it worked flawlessly. Now maybe I'll start using that hotmail account again. I'm starting to feel better about Microsoft than Google.
Weird, me too. I think all the attention Google get's has made me sick of them, not to mention I don't like company's who try to handle everything themselves. These types of companies will always use their products and services to somehow, someway push their other products and services.
I like my products and services to have universal support, which they usually don't when they only want to increase sales of their own shiz...
Of course, Microsoft isn't exactly the prodigal son here...
Does Exchange sync actually push and save battery?
My worry is that my Exchange contacts and my Hotmail contacts will all get jumbled if I add Hotmail Activesync. I hope that there is a preference option to only sync the Hotmail email and not sync the contacts... I probably have 500 or more contacts in Hotmail that I no longer use/double entry/etc, and I don't want to go through the pain of sorting through them. Whereas, my Exchange contacts are all important and I keep that tight.
Anyone know how to get around that problem?
I have the same problem. I would like to sync the Email but not the contacts if anyone has a way to work around this it would be greatly appreciated.
when you do this it will sync everything, but you can go into each application in the accounts page and delete each one, it will only delete it from the certain app.
will this improve battery life because the phone doesn't have to poll the hotmail account? that would actually by a major advantage for hotmail vs gmail...
Now we just need Live Messenger working with the Messenger app.
Wooot! Hotmail FTW!!
Wooot! Hotmail FTW!!
I can't get it to work, it only syncs my Outbox.
I tried this also and it screwed up my e-mail push on my Pre!
Now I can't see the inboxes, only the outboxes for hotmail, gmail and yahoo!
So I'm deleting all my e-mail accounts from my Pre and going to have to wait until they are all deleted (Usually 2 hours - depending how big your account is), then renter them into my phone.
I should have just left it in POP3! Sheesh!!
:-(
Does it really take up to 2 hours to delete? I've been struggling with this since they posted the article and I dont feel like heading into a Sprint store after working a long shift.
Yes, at minimum it can take up 2 hours to delete the e-mail account. It all depends on how large your e-mail account is.
I don't know why my inbox disappeared. But rentering your account information should fix the issue.
Thanks man, I looked it up online and other sources confirm what you're saying... You saved me a visit to the "Doctor". I'll wait a few hours and see how it goes.
Thanks for the scoop. Mine is 4 hrs and still not fully deleted. Inbox is gone. Still see outbox and edit hotmail account features. Hope the account fully disappears sometime today.
I can use all my boxes just fine. However since setting up the exchange I cannot send emails now. It says error cannot find the account. Anyone else having these issues?

Does a new account have to be set up? I would rather use a current account.
On my pre it will not let me change the POP settings to EAS what am I doing wrong will someone be putting this up on youtube so I have a step by step. I'm not the tech guru I wish I was.
Same for me. I had to delete and reinstall hotmail account. Will take a few hours to take effect.
Set up worked fine.
Is there a fix for the images as now they all show up as HTML code rather than the actual image?
not worth it no html support, waste of time like taking a step backword
Had hotmail account as a pop and tried. Found out I'd have to remove the account first. THEN I read the comments. No HTML? Ridic! Not even worth it. Glad it didn't let me right off the bat.
it only syncs 50 of my 300+ contacts, anybody knows why?
I had to do the same as others have already mentioned and that was to uninstall my current Live POP account. I did reluctantly because I've never used an Exchange account. I was successful in uninstalling the current POP account and adding Exchange in its place. But now like others, the messages appear in HTML code instead of images.
I read RafRol's post where it mentions "You will not get HTML mail via EAS because Hotmail is using Exchange ActiveSync 2.5, which only supports plain text e-mail." I hope Hotmail has the option to upgrade to a different version of ActiveSync. If not I definitely see myself going back to my Hotmail POP account.
Already went back. I'll wait til Hotmail truly joins the Synergy fold or this ActiveSync 2.5 thing gets addressed.
Anybody knows, whether tasks would be able to sync? Microsoft homepage also talks about tasks.
UGH! No HTML email support? Hmmm...stick with this and enjoy 'as items arrive' email, or go back and get HTML email support? Hmmmm...... the fact that I have to make this decision in the first place really blows.....
I installed this a few days ago and except for no html I was getting emails right away. Now they're not coming through, even when I try refreshing. So I'm using the web directly for hotmail and put the page on my launcher. The screen is formatted for mobile and I kind of like it better. When I had the POP setup on my email app none of my other folders showed up. They did with exchange setup but no html. Web has both.
