HP continues business push for Palm, focusing on the small variety this time 46
While HP may be the biggest consumer PC seller out there, they’re also tops when it comes to business purchases. We’re talking both big corporate and small shop buys - this is what we in the business refer to as “diversification” and “scale,” wherein HP is capable of selling their products to large and small groups across multiple industries and revenue levels.
With such scale, we’re pleased to see HP using their multitudinous business contacts to push webOS. In fact, not that long ago the HP’s “Small Business Education Series” email newsletter heavily and exclusively featured Palm smartphones. Very smartly, the email focused on the benefits of webOS, noting:
- webOS multi-tasks like no other. HP was sure to put emphasis on flicking between “apps & docs,” as business users don’t just care about multi-tasking with browsers and games.
- You can add up to sixteen email accounts. Yeah, we didn’t think about that either, but we can see how some small businesses can have multiple accounts (sales@, support@, admin@, etc) with one person managing them all.
- Touchstone!
- Wireless cloud syncing magics, otherwise known as Synergy. No need to plug in, unless you want to transfer files, that is.
- “Zero-touch IT support,” as in Palm manages for you the security “from the server, to the cloud, to your phone. Simple.” Granted, that’s a big of an over-simplification, but we’ll allow it.
And then there’s noting that every Palm phone, be it a Pre, and Pixi, or a Plus variant of either, is available for free on your choice of major American cellular carriers (excepting T-Mobile, of course). And the oh so lucrative accessories too, like the above mentioned Touchstone charger, fancy colorful backs for the Pixi, and the requisite cables, batteries, and Palm-branded cases. Though we’ll take the opportunity here to point you to our own PreCentral accessory store for that - we’ve got a bit more diversity and scale in that department.

hopefully they announce a new phone soon, and push that.
naa. they should just start an entirely new advertising canpaign promoting the pre. the slogan should b "tired of all those new phones with their big screens and lack of keyboards? get the new pre." im sure everyone has forgotten about this phone. a rerelease is exaclty what this phone needs. new hardware? who needs/wants it anyhow?
Everything is true!
Go in look look: http://www.bizboysell.com
Believe that you may need.
woot
I think what they're doing is pushing the 1st gen phones so that more potential users get used to working with webOS so that when new hardware lands (along w/ webOS 2.0), they'll jump in easily AND be more willing to shell out $$$ for a newer more advanced device. That's why 1st gen phones are dirt cheap if not free. It makes perfect business sense.
Yes, because people who either wait for two years to buy into a new platform (after it's announced) or to until a phone becomes free are the same ones that will shell out $$$ for newer more advanced device.
Sure, that, or they will get pi**ed off that they were sold two year old hardware and never come back to HPalm to purchase phones again (if they ever produce anything new).
It makes perfect business sense for HPalm, terrible business sense for the business buying in now...
Or be pissed that their email crashes when it goes beyond 3-4 back and forth replies.
Or if they're lucky enough to get the Sprint Pre, they'll be pissed when the Too Many Cards message pop ups with only 1 card open.
Never had that problem... the email crash, that is...
That and silence from HP means no phones coming out this year.
honestly i just hope they release 2.0. I don't expect much at all from 2.0. but i just hope maybe it can give my pre enough life to make it interesting thru January when i can get out of my sprint contract at a cheaper rate.
Steve Jobs has scabies
While I really don't care about editing documents on the Pre it seems a bit cheeky to push flipping between apps and docs without the ability to edit them...
DID you guys kno that when you buy a new palm device fromhp on line you get 50 dollar gift to buy apps now that's nice
DID you guys know, wtat my GPS is broken again? Thats some nice hardware... And still no option of saving SMS.
Anyway. I love this OS but common. SMS-Saving? Whats the big deal of a cloudservice or something? If thats too much than add a limit to it.
not sure how much touchstone is a impressive to business. maybe to the employee but i don't think IT cares. And
it would be nice if some of the business apps hp developed for android and apple they also develop for their own webOS.
i'm not familiar with hp's business apps for android. i searched on cyrket but didn't get too many hits but i guess i agree with you. If they are the sort of apps that impress business consumers then no need not to have them on webos.
have up to 16 emails at once and PALM makes sure nothing gets messed up.. looks like Palm is still in charge of something
I'm sure I'm reading too much into this line, but "Free* *While Supplies Last" sounds good to me. I can't imagine the phone not being free if it was just on back order. Perhaps HP is getting rid of their stock? New phones are closer than we think?
More likely, they just know if they don't clear them out NOW, it will be that much harder in three months.
I love my overclocked and patched Pre, but Blah, blah blah...whatever HP Palm, give us new hardware already!
I don't care to hear anymore gospel until they give us something new. I seriously doubt any small business or enterprise users care anymore either...that train left the station for the original Pre awhile ago. Nice the campaign shows the devices are free, but the Pre should be free by now, so, big whoop.
They better get Docs handling fixed, I can open any document from an email and when I close the document the entire phone reboots.
However I can open and read multi-meg books with PReader and nary a problem.
PDF, .txt, .Doc, .Xls, all of them make the phone reboot when I close them from opening in mail viewer.
I like the business marketing push. I think success for the Pre with enterprise users will drive average consumer usage. If the enterprise starts acquiring mobile fleets of the Pre, that will drive adoption in the wider consumer market as well.
+1
DID you guys kno that when you buy a new palm device fromhp on line you get 50 dollar gift to buy apps now that's nice
Are there even $50 worth of quality apps to buy?
Yes.
Yep, but they are all 3D games -- and that is what HP is pushing, hey we're second as a 3D gaming platform!!!
Exactly what every small business needs, a way for employees to waste time while they should be doing work!!
I can hear the cubicle chat now: "Woo Hoo, just got a new high score on Angry Birds!!"
yeah agreed. it's only games. I don't play games so the answer Not even close to $50 worth of apps worth buying.
not only that, there is more options free on other platforms but there are really more options as business apps.
This won't seriously be a business phone until it has proxy support! C'mon HP/Palm, this has been a glaring omission since day 1! iPhone do it, BB's do it, etc.
If I were HP/Palm, I wouldn't push the Touchstone so much until they've fixed all the hardware issues with it (and made sure that the original, defective stock is depleted, which doesn't seem to be the case). Just got two new TSes today, and they both have the eternal beeping charging alert problem. This would be a great way to convince office workers to ditch their new webos phone.
Pushing a 1rst gen smartphone at this point is like week old leftovers. Just forget it. Besides, were waiting on prime rib, right?
Dont spoil our appetite, HP.
Does WebOS have a remote wipe capability like blackberries do. That is if a phone from a company is lost and it has confidential info like emails or docs on it can it be remotely erased? Cause that's something lots of companies like.
Yes, Palm does. If you go to "tips" on pre/central.net it has this & other interesting things. Here is the text of the remote wipe:
Remote wipe your phone

i'm gonna check it out now. I know business like that to secure data. That's something i'd push. i know it freaks out consumers but if you have confidential data and your a business it can be useful. Like if you happen to be on a bender and leave your phone in a bar. :)
Yes. You can remote wipe your phone with your palm profile, or if you have an EAS account on it, then EAS remote wipe works as well.
If I could hold out without doc editing without internalz until now I can hold out a bit longer.
I do still like my pr
I think that HP should be pushing webOS and whatever handsets are running it to the business community. The OS has a lot to offer business users. But, they need a document editing solution and they need the ability to open .eml files. It is a nonstarter for me that my phone, Pre+, cannot open a forwarded e-mail.
Uh, I get dozens of forwarded emails per day (and forward dozens)? I'm not sure what you mean by this?
different forwarding methods yield different results. If forwarded as an attachment, the original becomes an eml file, something the wbOS mail client can't open.
It's curious that they advertise it again as *Palm* webOS, maybe they are not changing the name to HP webOS at all.
Palm Web OS, the BE OS of the phone world. They need show-stopping hardware to help even try and offset the loss of interest. If 'mansion' is any indication, it ain't going to happen. Of course, easy and mediocre may lure people who never have had smart phones. How many people really think 'high end' when they think HP and they sell more PCs than anyone. Then again, I've never actually seen any HP anything where I have marveled at the quality. Just a late night rant. Web OS is still cool. My release date Pre still works. And, I always think my current Palm will be the last they ever release. It just sucks that even with new owners it still feels that way.
HPalm needs to re-emphasize the "business" purpose for the Palm Pre. Palm has always been known to me as a business phone such as the Blackberries!
