HP extends free developer Pre 2 program to all qualified developers 16
HP clearly wants to make sure as many webOS apps are developer as possible in the coming months until the Veer, Pre 3, and TouchPad are finally released. To that end, they’ve elected to expand their free developer Pre 2 program to all qualified developers, not just those first 100 that Palm selected. In a post on the Developer Center Blog, HP pushes very hard that Enyo is the future of webOS apps and that developers should give serious consideration to developing in it instead of Mojo, saying that “you should factor in the effort that will be required to rebuild these apps in Enyo.”
Considering the ease of drag-and-drop Enyo development we saw at the Think Beyond developer event, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Of course, in the meantime you’ll be left developing apps that nobody can buy until devices like the Veer land with webOS 2.X (or if/when 2.X gets pushed to the Pre 2). Are you a developer interested in finding out whether or not you meet the criteria that define “qualified”? You’ll find directions at the source link below.

Hmm, I don't see any information about what it takes to be qualified.
I'd like to know how I can qualify. I'm planning to be a developer, but I don't know if it'll happen during this free Pre 2 promotion.
how about free pre 2s for 'qualified' EOL'd pre & pre plus users? I kid I kid.. kinda ;P (seriously tho a subsidy/no consequence upgrade would be ideal)
I can see that working for Pre Plus users, seeing that those are the users on Verizon and AT&T, but Pre 2's wouldn't be very useful to Sprint owners (unless the CDMA Pre 2 makes it easier to "2" your Sprint Pre).
Fantastic, just after i paid $270 for mine after the rebate and got shipped today.... Thanks Hp.
If you got the phone from HP, call them up. Maybe you would have qualified and you can get it for free. Won't hurt to ask, especially so soon after the announcement.
I sent an email asking for more information on what it takes to qualify. I suggest anyone who's interested to do the same.
I just did that as well as it doesn't say what is needed to qualify.
Just sent in my email! We'll see what happens.
At the dev event on Feb. 9th (if you talked to the right people) they said they'd send us free Pre 2s. They said they'd need to know what apps we were trying to develop and some other basic information. I wonder if that is the "qualification."
But I still haven't heard back from them (granted, it hasn't been a week and I'm sure they're really busy).
Don't worry. I'm sure you'll hear back in the coming months. =>
You Have To Have A Active App In Developement To Qualify.
Julian from Liebl Software here. I can confirm that hp send us a dev device. A brand new pre 2. It took them sometime, but I am impressed by this kind of effort! Tank you HP
Speaking of developers... I still do not understand how someone from say Microsoft or android hasn't uploaded their applications on to the market. There must be something wrong. Why doesn't HP or Palm ask them. They have to be wondering why premium developers aren't moving. You have stated you've made it easy to do. Any kind of entertainment app for WM or BB I kind of expect to also be on WebOS. Transparent Apps if you will.
At this point we are quite certain applications such as tweet-deck or ESPN center people would even purchase for a dollar. Now many on android wouldn't want that as it is open source but there are several others that are descent developers looking for donations and WebOS is the place for good applications to get paid for at this point. I just think from one point of view Palm's device was looked at as too cheap too quickly and from another's want too much sophistication. It is what it is. Likely The issue becomes the small flaws we see within the native OS applications such as little support for Google maps (no layers) and the missed calls notification error, and simple errors such as missing preferences and options and the wording of the device Updates of the nature " we'll download this over the next couple days and let you know when its done." ?? Its done in under an hour and its load constantly. Its that kind of uncertainty thats killing your customer base. Now I try not to ride HP too hard but their guilty of it too. They swear they know what a consumer is and as I've stated its people who believe in your products.
The only way they believe is when they do everything that available in todays world and then they'll do it your way. No ones asking for the phone to plated in gold, but we do ask for services that are available and expected on all other mobile devices.
You can't have text sizing off in preferences, something micro small and other overly large at that point your losing the relation to business and even typical consumers. It isn't fun its just wrong. If its an error fine but once someone complains they have to change it. Then having text messaging without time stamps and update downloads without loading bars.
That is crazy to us to think oh it will be done in about 40 minutes on 110 MB download that has a variable output of kb/s. It just isn't acceptable anymore. Every phone even non-smartphones have loading information. It truly seems like someone's secretary got a hold of the blueprints for the company after he the original owner had died. The question is did she kill him? The story of America and why its never ever really any good continues.
@cooz0977 -- I'm sorry . . . I can't quite figure out what point (if any) you are really trying to make.
I was wondering the same thing...
