HP files trio of new trademarks: Touchslate, Duopad, Touchcanvas 103
by Dieter Bohn Tue, 25 Jan 2011 11:24 am EST

First we saw the PalmPad trademark, then the TouchPad, and now we have three more: the Touchslate, the Touchcanvas, and the Duopad. Which, if any, will become the final name for the Topaz? Our money is still on "PalmPad," but it's interesting to see that HP's trademark filing team is just as unsure about whether to call these devices "Slates" or "Pads" as we are.
What would you like the branding to be?

I'm more interested in the specs and infrastructure than the branding.
Wholly F'n. You people are so fast at posting.
Anyway, I like the touchpad name the most. Then the PamPad. The others are kind of weird names.
FLASHpad :)
Not to be confused with; http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.T28898....
Topaz -- WaitPad
Opal -- LatePad
Topaz -- LatePad
Opal -- LateSlate
Palm Slate, Palm Pad, Palm Canvas, and Palm Duo.
+1 (Amen!)
Touchslate: regular iPad-like tablet / slate.
Touchcanvas: remember the display foil that McKinney showed off? You'll be able to buy as much of that as you want and plaster it wherever you want. Want it on your table? Your fridge? Your wall? Your toaster?? Less expensive and more flexible competition for Microsoft Surface.
Duopad: Looks like a netbook, but opens up to show two screens. Can be used like a netbook with a touchscreen keyboard if held horizontally, or as an E-reader resembling an actual book if held vertically.
so the duopad is a large DS? that would b pretty awesome
OMG, a two screen tablet device would be awesome! But, probably not announced on the 9th, or if so, available until year end. Bummer.
Interesting how the brain works. By having the word Touchcanvas on top of Duopad, I read "Douchepad".
Me too !!! Damn it you beat me to it.... ;-)
Douchepad: The ultimate iPad competitor.
The "DuoPad" sounds intriguing. A two-screen tablet would be very cool.
running a core two duo processor?

I know webOS currently doesnt support x86, but a boy can dream of a dual booting world cant he.
I was thinking Dual Boot.. xp and webos!
yeah iv thought for a long time that a webos skin over windows to create an touch interface for the pc would b quite awesome... possibly a monitor that webos running on it as its interface? im sure they are on that since hp makes monitors (nice ones at that). or make a docking station for the tablet to b used as your pc monitor? i can see it now...
Evth else instead of 'PALMpad' will be a bad idea.
Nobody knows a 'Touchpad'.
DUOPAD definitely infers a two-screen device.
Methinks 'twill be an interesting year for the purveyors of Hewlett-Packard goods.
Microsoft "Courier" anybody?
Palmpad. It's a perfect description of what the product is. All these other trademark filings are decoys!
Remember that HP has a series of "TouchSmart" PC's. It's another set of products in that family.
My bet? Touchcanvas will be the higher-priced, perhaps higher-resolution tablet that comes with a pressure-sensitive stylus and software for artists. {Jonathan}
this would be pretty awesome.
Hpalm first ones to have Adobe Photoshop running on their devices? And than boom printing it via webos printer and stuff in like all formats that you love to? cmon :D
I like your bet
I would really like them to call it the Palm Pilot.
Here Here.
I think Palm Pilot is a great idea (I suggested the same thing in the "TouchPad" article). "Palm Pilot" still has great brand equity (I think significantly more so than the "Palm" name alone). Even a lot of consumers who don't know what a Palm Pilot was recognize the name, and understand that it was an object of desire / status symbol. The modern tablet is the spiritual successor of the Palm Pilot, and there is a lot that could be done from a marketing standpoint - highlighting the fact that the company that invented mobile computing is now rethinking and reinventing mobile.
Further, a lot could be done around the "Rethinking" label to highlight the Palm tablet (and overall WebOS ecosystem) advantages. For example, imagine a "Rethinking Connections" spot that shows a Palm tablet being placed on a touchstone and immediately starting to charge (highlight wireless charging), then shows someone working in an app on the tablet, then getting "bumping" it to there phone and continuing on seamlessly (highlight continuous client), then show a video playing on the tablet and being sent to the TV and the tablet being lifted off and acting as a remote control. People don't need to understand what inductive charging is or the concept of a "continuous client", or what HDMI is, they can simply see it and immediately understand that it is different, useful, and cool.
The "DuoPad," for light AND heavy days!
I hope that's not the final name for ANY HPalm devices.
And let's hope no one says "HPalm" anymore.
big bad dev over here dont like the slang haha... i like the HPalm unofficially branding. really sums up who we are talking about. cuz we usually arnt just talkin about Palm or just HP in most cases now. would you prefer Palm Gobal Business Unit every time we refer to "them"
Well, adding a "P " doesn't take that much longer, try giving that a whirl.
Haha, that was the first thing I thought when I saw the name. Duopad? really?
I've been rallying for "HP Canvas" for ever. It makes sense: it looks like canvas, it can used for creating, and it ties the web thing together with the use of "canvas", i.e., the HTML5 element
DuoPad - To me this infers both WiFi & cellular.
Or maybe these are for different devices. DuoPad could be like one of the many (Asus, MSI, OLPC) two-screen netbook prototypes. TouchCanvas could be some sort of peripheral device for graphic design or some other tool for creativity. Heck, TouchCanvas could even be the name of a development environment for the HP Touch ecosystem. TouchSlate, maybe for the Windows tablets? TouchPad, well, that's just stupid and should not be trademark-able at this point.
Oooh time to buy up all the possible domain names ;)
I like the way you think!!
Couldn't this be possible names for multiple tablets? Not just a bunch of names for one?
how about we call it "Lets get it to RetailPad"
What about trademarked names for cell phones?
DuoPad - Tablet with a laptop keyboard dock.
HP TOUCHCANVAS !!!!
Now they using my name hahaha
Shall I sue ? :P
Nope: the attorney's fees you would have to pay to the attorneys representing your attorneys would be un-touchpad-able!
Haha good one :)
I still like palmPad the best!
Or maybe the DuoPad is like the Motorola that transforms your Smartphone into a netbook.
Awful... all three.
In the last article about the new "TouchPad" name, I pointed out that the PalmPad mark was Rejected by the TM office... In class now (Electronic Circuits Design & Analysis) so no time to look it back up, but I linked to where I found that, in the original PalmPad database entry.
So unless HP has acted since then (which I believe was last October when it was rejected), I'd take your money Off of the PalmPad.
But any name is exciting, as long as the device is killer!!!
The rejection made no sense, though. The way it was worded, it sounded like they were rejecting it for infringing on the Palm brand. But HP owns the Palm brand, so I don't quite get it.
all three combined make me think of HP DouchePad
Whilst pretty much all the trademarked names are OK, none of them set anything on fire, IMO. If they could only bring back the name Folio, despite the negative connotations....
Still, I am surprised they did not trademark TabSmart, TouchTab, SmartTab, SmartSlate (naaa!), SmartPalm(?!) and a whole lot of other permutations.
HP webOS: Please Touch Everything. {Jonathan}
HP Touchcanvas? lol TouchPad seems most like what HP would do based on their past branding of products.
HP TouchPalmCanvasPadSlateSmart
Therefore... as predicted, no Phone names to be filed probably in the next 3 years. HP bought PALM just for the WebOS. They can care less about phones.
Therefore...(sic)as predicted, no story can escape without an ignorant hater spouting off a totally unsupported conclusion.
Seriously, do you think that maybe, just maybe, there have been trademark filings by HP that PreCentral didn't catch? Or maybe, just maybe, they will be filing them soon? Since these didn't appear on PreCentral until today, does that mean that yesterday was proof that HP didn't care about tablets?
I was thinking if they didn't have a name by now means these devices were not ready for prime time or introduction next month?
Not really a fan of any of these names. I do think HP needs to be original. And all of these *pad names are not. This whole slate trip they're on is pretty wack too. When it seems like the industry has taken on the name tablet as the form factor. Canvas is the only one I would consider and thats pretty boring as well. Be more create HP. Whats up with that marketing team over there with these desperate names?
I don't think these are names for the product itself, but maybe an feauture within it. Touch canvas can be a program that you can draw on, doupad maybe some sort of navigation area within the screen,(like dual joysticks for gaming). Touchslate is the only name I think would be for the product itself. I happen to like topaz.
These people are just screwing with us now. Good to know that HP has a sense of humor.
Touchcanvas - now doesn't that sound like the flexible screen thingy HP keeps talking about?
I like TouchPad then DuoPad but honestly I like topaz the best. Why dose it have to end with Pad or Slate cus Apple dose that. The pre wasn't called prephone cus everyone knew it was a phone. Everyone will know the topaz is a tablet so just name it Topaz. One of the biggest competitors is just called Xoom.
WebPad or WebSlate
How about PalmTab or WebTab?
ever heared of WeTab?
how about 'maxipad'?
c'mon hp - i don't know about everyone else, but i'd like you to get your fecal matter assimilated and deliver a flagship line of webos phones and quit screwing around.
i could really give a flying steamer about webos "x-pads", printers, toasters, and anything else until you can step up to the plate and start hitting the ball out of the park with webos phones.
why does everything regarding these devices always have to be a "pad" or "slate"
how about moving away from everything apple coins instead of following them.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Let's drop the "pad" and use the "tab."
Lol they still doesn't know what will be the name for their product that will be announce in 2 weeks?!
you remember apple registered for the term ipad less than 1 week before presentation? which was already taken by fujitsu?
PALMreader
... Those are all really terrible names. I hope they don't go with any of them. Do we really need the word touch in there? Or pad?
I want it to be the
HP A.C. Slater
Saved by the Bell Edition
As long as it doesn't have "pad" in the name I'm fine with it.
btw I think "TouchThru" would be nice.
wonder if they gonna rename it for international customers, just like motorola did with the milestone, in the usa known as droid. none of the names sounds good (neither did palmpad)
How about Handjobber?
TouchTablet...
canvas sounds slick
Could DuoPad have something do with a HP WebOS and Windows dual device? What's that called?
they should do away with traditonal names
for the 9" go with palm spyder Tablet with WEBOS
7" or smaller venom tablet
top of line phone phones could be palm "sylk" with WEBOS
see where I'm goin with this..
I like this idea a lot. The suggested names they've applied for are just *terrible* (and for that matter, so is PalmPad).
The idea of unifying webOS devices by giving them spider-themed names is a really good one. It would make the relationship between devices either instantly obvious, or at least intriguing to new consumers.
Tarantula, Widow, Silk, Spinneret, Trapdoor, Arachnid, Orb, Longlegs, and on and on.
Call it the HP Foleo
Go full circle and call it the PalmPilot.
I agree that it shouldn't be whateverPad or whateverTab. Those just sound like "me too!" names.
Why not just keep Topaz and Opal? Or Topaz 9 and Topaz 7.
i am ready to embrace hp.. as much as i love the palm name, i am ready for it to be retired from the consumers eye. then i can one day tell my children and grand children that i owned the first device of the mobile revolution. i'll show them my ancient palm pre and they'll ask in awe, "what is that?" i will say "young lad, you see that hp device you wield? this palm pre is it's forefather." they will reply, "father/granfather, you were so wise to have chosen such a superior OS so long ago." i will reply, "i know young one, i know." the palm name can hang around in the background somewhere, but hp's name alone can hold it's own weight. i like the codenames.. call it/them the hp topaz, hp opal, hp duo, hp slate 2, hp pad, hp cycle, hp period (ok just kidding with the last 3). hp something! consumers like unique, catchy names like xoom and playbook.. a topaz is a type of jewel right? that perfect.. the diamond in the rough.. heck call it the hp diamond!
Anything "Pad" is going to be associated with Apple by the general public.
HP could take slate...
Or, give a nod to John Locke and call it Tabula Rasa
"CleanSlate"?
Personally, I think all three of those names are terrible.
Hmm, I think "HP CanvasTouch" rolls off the tongue a little easier than TouchCanvas. Please, just let them have a nice marketable name by Feb 9th...
How about PC getting some action on the articles!!!
U know that TOPAZ is a new sort of apple? Just found in wikipedia. :-)
Foleo?
Not that I will buy one but how could hp be introducing these devices next month and they don't even have names? They should've been doing this month's ago.
Yeah Topaz: New Apple (Mixture of Rubin (!!) & Wanda (??))
HP is kidding us ... (in German the word for kidding has something to do with apples :-)))
Great
I think that castle or mansion sounds nice, or even manta-ray and stingray, like someone has already said, have a common theme like large houses or rays/sharks.
How's about "The Slate formally known as PalmPad"?
Small black Pre turns to large white slate and says in a deep, ominous voice, "Douche, I AM your father..."
Why does it say trio...you should of wrote treo :)
I strongly suspect that none of these are going to be the name of any of the HP Palm tablets. I think they are simply decoys (as was PalmPad).
superphone
Make it more personal,
call it Harry! "Hey mate, can I borrow your Harry Palm?" :-D
My Votes for names on the tablets are:
HP Nūbe
Or Palm Nūbe
Nube is the latin/Spanish for cloud. The naming scheme is consistent with Palm’s traditional naming scheme and using the macron over the U to emphasize the correct pronunciation. It also reinforces the goal that HP has for webOS around cloud computing
My second suggestion
HP Nūage
Or Palm Nūage
Just like Nūbe, Nūage means cloud in French. The name also reinforces HP's focus on cloud computing for webOS. The naming scheme is consistent with Palm’s traditional naming scheme by using the macron over the U to emphasize the correct pronunciation. The added bonus is that it has a slight homonym/homophone-ish look to the word that looks like “New Age.” Heralding Palm and webOS’ “new age” under the HP umbrella.
