HP gives away Veers at D9 Conference, CEO Apotheker to speak 38
The D9 conference kicks off tonight and HP CEO Leo Apotheker is slated as one of the keynote speakers. We'll be curious to see if he will re-confirm the previously-stated June ship date for the TouchPad. In any case, we expect webOS to be a major topic of conversation for the new CEO. HP VP of Developer Relations, Richard Kerris, will also be onhand at the event, so if you're one of the fancy folk with an invite, be sure to say howdy.
Actually, if you're there, be sure to pick up your Schwag Bag, which will include a slew of free stuff including the diminutive HP Veer, which HP is giving away to all attendees.

Come on Leo....Tell us Something!!!!
the announcement will come at this event..... I feel it...
I actually don't want to bring up the "make things right" promise again, but....
D9 attendees get FREE Veers.
BestBuy reps get FREE Veers.
... get FREE Veers.
It wouldn't be an issue for HP to at least offer an upgrade plan for the legacy users. Like... trade-in your Pre- for a Pre 2 at a small fee or whatever.
"Making things right" was supposed to happen a few weeks after Feb 9th. You can pretty much count on them counting on us forgetting. There wasn't and never was any plan to "make things right". They just were hoping time we would have just forgotten and be wanting their new products. Sorry HP we will never forget!
If you've been a loyal Palm user for years, HP is going to make things right.
However, if you spend most of your day trying to dis our phones or if you happen to be an attendee of a conference we're going to make things free!
A promise that is not on paper is not a promise at all. Law 101.
actually not true! There has to be intent, that is all.
But did HP shake your hand and say "we have a deal"? No, someone made an off-the-cuff remark that has not been repeated since. My feeling is he was given the third degree and HP moved on with their life.
That "someone" was Jon Zilber and the "off-the-cuff-remark" is still on "The Official HP Palm Blog".
Not very official at all, hmmm??

What does law have to do with this?
HP set the "make things right" expectation to mitigate the failure to meet the expectation they set for a "WebOS 2" update.
Upset customers could just move to other plaforms... many already have. But HP is fortunate to have long time customers that would love to have their faith in HPalm restored. Many customers are hanging on only because of the "make things right" promise (or because of provider contracts).
Successful companies set and manage customer expectations and occasionally exceed them. Companies that consistently miss expectations lose customers and fail. HP, and Palm before them, have failed miserably the last few years. HP needs to start putting points in the win column.
While in a generous mood (with HP employees, BB employees, developers, etc) HP could score some points by making good on "making things right" expectation that HP, via Jon Zilber, set.
From the "Immutable Rules For Customer Satisfaction".
http://www.paulsudnik.com/immutable-rules-for-customer-satisfaction.htm
Ensure that the customer has a clear set of expectations.
If you exaggerated any claims for what you are about to deliver then you run the very real risk of reducing customer satisfaction straight after delivery of your product. The performance standards of your product or service that you communicate to your customers must be ambitious enough to attract them but also must be sufficiently realistic so as to be met or exceed with every transaction. Customer satisfaction is fickle. The ‘Disconfirmation of Expectations Theory’ seeks to explain perceived quality as a function of the difference between customer expectation and the actual performance of the service (Oliver 1980; Grönroos 1982; Churchill and Surprenant 1982). The theory also argues that customer loyalty, as manifest by repurchase decisions or willingness to praise the supplier by word of mouth, is a function of customer satisfaction. As customer satisfaction increases so will the level of your customers’ expectations – continually refine your product or service with a view to maintaining and increasing levels of customer satisfaction.
Hey bobsentell, you might want to look into a refund on that Law 101 course. Oral agreements are certainly valid in most instances. However, a contract made without consideration, that is, not in return for any payment - i.e. a promise is not an enforceable contract.
Try taking that blog post to court and see how far it gets you.
The Veer is already free at Best Buy. Get going..
Is there any live coverage on P/C?
Let me guess more hot air and still no release date and carriers? More, "in coming weeks" statements that people are sick of.
im willing to bet a $1.00... We will get announcement from D9.....

When is Leo speaking? Is Kerris also a speaker?
I don't know why everyone wants them to "make things right". Sure, they said it, and hopefully they'll do something when the new devices hit, but what other company gives you free hardware? Certainly not their competition, which is on a one year release cycle.
This is capitalist America. If you want to 'make things right', use the $ in your pocket. I doled out my hard earned money for a Pre2, and I know I'll buy a Pre3 when that day finally comes. I got almost two years out of my Pre-, which is a lot more than I've gotten out of other devices, and it was worth every penny I paid for it. The only thing hp needs to do to 'make things right' for me is keep improving the hardware and keep webOS alive. Just think, if they never bought palm, we might not have future webOS releases to look forward to!
I don't think Making Things Right involves free hardware or discounts necessarily. I think a Sprint announcement would certainly go a long ways (I'm on Verizon so I don't have a horse in that race), another gesture would be a coupon towards apps. Say, buy a Touchpad or Pre 3 and we'll give you a $50 coupon good towards purchases from the webOS App Catalog. This helps developers and customers. I think a bundle deal for Veer/Pre 3's and Touchpads makes sense. Trading in a Pre Plus for a Pre2 or $100 dollars off a Pre 3 would be great, but maybe asking a bit too much.
agreed.. all this do something for us **** . im sick of it.. just buy a new phone from somewhere else.. they will get the messege..
Who said making things right had anything to do with Hardware? The promise was in response to the nondelivery of promised flash, Web OS2.0, and document editors since launch of the platform. What I want is for them to get all of this right on the next iteration (2.x+) so when I buy my next phone on my carrier of choice it can still be a Web OS phone.
Maybe people do bring this up often, but remember 100's or even 1000's (10? 100-thousands?) of people read this site and others like it and if just a tiny fraction opine about something on occasion it is likely to be brought up many times by sheer numbers. No sense whining about whiners; this is the interwebs and it's full of people with freedom and anonymity to voice whatever is on their mind ad nauseum. Doesn't make them wrong to bring it up.
They did deliver webOS 2.0. It just couldn't be delivered onto the legacy devices. That's like saying Nintendo should be held accountable because the new features on the DSi (like DSiWare) aren't available on the original DS. Software will always improve when hardware improves, and companies can only do so much when it comes to supporting older devices. Would we rather hp be held back in development by the lower specs of previously released hardware, and therefore jeopardize the future of webOS? Or should they code future iterations of their OS for the latest and greatest hardware? We can't have it both ways, and unless they do the latter, webOS will die a very near and unfortunate death. I guess I'm just grateful that there is a webOS future to look forward to, regardless of wireless carrier. There's an insanely talented community here that has managed to do things no one ever thought possible, so I'm not concerned. As long as hp keeps making devices, someone somewhere will figure out a way to make them work to meet a user's needs!
I am sure HP made the right decision to move on and not update 2 year old devices. Unlike Nintendo and the DS metaphor Web OS WAS promised to the Pre. That is why they apologized when it came down to the undoubtedly tough call not to spend any more resources making that happen.
I'm not bitter they didn't do it. But there was an offer to make it right since they couldn't deliver 2.x to the Pre-. I'm just as curious as anyone what (if at all) that will look like.
They're handing them out like candy now.
I liked the pre- have the pre2 and would gladly take a Veer...
Good moves from HP all the way with their promotion...
The sneak into the game...and then in autum they'll launch their flagship phone...
You'll see. Right before Christmas. Remember this.
Technically they may have no reason to make it right. But the way they are handling the FREE VEER promotion. It would do them well to A: allow a free Veer with the exchange of your old pre. Or B: Give a substantial discount to a pre3 with the exchange of your old pre. If they did either it would go along way for the loyalists here. Along with a mighty core of evangelists to sing the praises of WebOS. Better that them a passionate group now h3ll bent on trashing them at every turn.
Ball's in their court. We await to see what they do.
Free stuff.. Im jealous
Wow, I'd love a free Veer.
This site has turned into the biggest collection of cry babies.

Announcements of announcements and free stuff NOT for the group they've kicked hardest to the curb.
HP is following Palm's work to the letter.

Well, I lost my VZW Pre Plus this weekend so I guess any thoughts of making things right won't pertain to me. Back to my Moto Razr until I decide what to do next. It will be Android, WP7, and maybe WebOS depending what happens next.
I will definitely be tuning in for any glimmer of news on a Pre 3+ handset.
