HP hears you on the OTA update issue, working on "something to make things right" 248
Tired of trying that webOS 2 update checker over and over again to see if you might get a different result? Over at the official HP Palm Blog (aka one of the few places you can actually see the now-defunct Palm branding), Director of Online Communications Jon Zilber has posted an update about the kerfuffle about HP's cancellation of Over-The-Air updates for webOS devices older than the Pre 2.
Zilber re-confirmed that OTA updates aren't coming, calling it a "difficult and, frankly, painful decision" between "supporting the past with over-the-air updates and ensuring that our upcoming devices would live up to your hopes." In other words, he paints it as an issue of resources and HP has decided to focus their resources on the future. Most important to webOS faithful might be this: HP has heard all the feedback, they're not made of stone, you know? Finally, Zilber does add this:
We’re working on something that we hope will help make things right for you. We’ll be sharing the specifics with you when they’re ready
We'll be eager to see what that "something" is (we're not saying, we're just saying: everybody loves an Oprah moment). The word parsers among you might note that the post is careful to pose the issue as a technical one related to OTA updates and not the capabilities of the devices themselves, which could either mean that the original hint about a PC-based update is still a remote possibility or that HP doesn't like to talk down to the Pre and Pixi. For now, we're forced to lean towards the latter.

free gold!
no but seriously, if they just tossed a pre 2 in my lap I might change my opinion
Now a early upgrade option to those with existing Palm profiles would be sweet! If I could grab a Pre3 come April I'd be happy! Extremely Happy!!
forget the update. Phones sooner. stop the lies. Where is the hardware? Shipping weeks after announcement? lie.Giant public lie. As someone said, the Pre 3 will be old news come late summer. I love Webos but come on.
The Government is in on it, man! They know everything! It's all liiiiieees!
A mail-in rebate for a $100 gift card on hp.com when you buy the Pre2 or Pre3 off their site.
Nokia just abandoned sybian and meego for WinMo. WebOS just took the only chair in Darwin's waiting room.
HP said, "Everybody ON...." uh, except our existing customers...
a pre 2? Why would I lock myself into yet another 2 years with a phone that would be outdated by the summer? If it were a Pre 3, I might stick around to see that happen, but quite frankly, I'm not buying anything else from HP until I see it happen. Just too many broken promises.
Besides, I'm not even sure I'd want to stick around for the Pre 3 - ridiculous that it's not 4G. I can't see any phone being made today without a 4G radio. Complete waste.
Actually, the Pre3 has HSPA+, which AT&T touts as their answer to 4G; a claim I happen to accept. Because, although HSPA+ is built on 3G technology, it does achieve 4G speeds.
4G is defined as up to 100mbit. There isn't a carrier in the US that offers real 4G. It's all a marketing scam.
already knew that fact, but the point I'm trying to make is with the marketing terminology that all cellular providers are using. Why would I buy a phone with only a CDMA radio when all new smart phone companies are making LTE/WiMax/HSPA+?
Wow ... so all smart phones release after 2/11/2011 will be LTE/WiMax/HSPA+ ... really? LOL
hey genius. go ahead and buy your cdma phone in the summer of 2011. now that you're locked in for the next two years, when everyone is screaming on LTE or WiMax, don't complain how slow and outdated your phone is.
i'd say he'll be the one with the last laugh because his 3G phone will still have some battery left by 5pm. plus, we'd be lucky to have full coverage around the US in 2 years anyway LTE or WiMax
...and Verizon has LTE, Sprint has WiMax... HP is making a CDMA phone. Again, Why would I buy? I am not an AT&T customer nor would I ever be one.
Great info! I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have.

Awesome article! I want people to know just how good this information is in your article. It’s interesting, compelling content. Your views are much like my own concerning this subject.
Zmey Biz
It was really a good news for all of us.I am eagerly waiting for that time. Thanks for sharing.Thanks. usb safe
...maybe..
but I bet it will be end of march when they do something, then it will only be another 3 month hold out until the Pre3 arrives.
honestly, early upgrade offers on pre 2's would go a long way because people wouldn't feel like they now own a dead platform device. That said, there isn't much they can do for Sprint customers.
I will say though, a cheap pre 2 price won't do it for me, since I don't want to get stuck in a contract for two years on 480x320 device with no front facing camera, just ridiculous in 2011.
Let me guess... In the coming months?
There's something really screwed up with this website. The last 4 articles don't even show up on my Palm Pre on the mobile website...even though the 4th one was posted this afternoon at 1:19 (presumably eastern) and the 3rd was posted at 2:54. There are also issues with comments not appearing on the mobile website vs the regular website. I posted a comment on one article. After posting I could see it. When I navigated away on the same device and came back it did not show up.
Here we go again, if you eat this shit up, you suffer from battered webOS user syndrome
Ha Ha. I agree.
I've got 6 months before 2yrs hits for my pre, I lose nothing to hear them out.
Tho, techincally I can upgrade now on Sprint... but honestly, there's nothing compelling.
Me too! The only problem with me hanging in, is that my Pre is dying...Great time for that huh
I'm in the same boat, my friend. My Sprint Pre is on its last legs. I was holding out for the announcement, now I don't know what to do. Android? iPhone?
Drop the phone on the floor preferably on the open-close button, that should make it not function and the only way to open the phone would be to slide it. Take it to your Sprint store and chances are they won't fix it cause it is very timely. The repair costs $35 at sprint and if they can't fix it, they will provide you with a new-re-furbished one.
Me too. Looks like Android for me.
What's the deadline to take a different EVDO phone and save the $10 premium data charge for 24 months on Sprint?
@PreDogs The deadline was over last month
Ok thanks, guess that ices it. Time to add the extra G power and hope I find bars soon.
I have no idea what is going on here. I feel bad for everyone that has a Pre dying on them. Mine has been dropped, stepped on, dropped some more, sat on... Did I say dropped?
This thing still has no Oreo effect, runs a 1.2ghz
Talkin about a "Chuck Norris Sprint Pre"
All this thing has is scuffs where the cement has "tried" to put a whoopin on my Pre when dropped :)
Perhaps it is because I talk to mine? (i know i am not sane sometimes)
Post Traumatic hp Disorder (PThpD).
I'm going out today to look for a therapy that helps me recover from 8 months of being fooled. I could have upgraded to another phone back in June but I kept waiting. Silly me.
I think this will be a new tagline for me when commenting on HP's abandonment of us, just when we wanted and needed them the most...
whatever. Anyone who commented on this post on their Facebook post of this got deleted. They could give a flying rip.
I have "something" for them right HERE!
While I appreciate the gesture, this really doesn't help. You would think that HP/Palm had to know that no updates to preexisting devices would anger their small fan base. You would think that they would've had a strategy to address this yesterday. And you would think that they would provide a clear plan of action moving forward. But instead, they act like this is a shock, like they've had no time to contemplate the consequences, and plan on remedying this by making us wait for an unspecified amount of time for an unspecified solution.
HP doesn't care about it's small fan base. They care about selling tablets to new users.
What gesture? They eliminated gestures!
Haha. That's funny.
Totally agree. If a corporation is worried about a bad reputation, they should move quickly to remedy it (or better yet, know they are screwed before their customers know and be ready to respond immediately -- water under the bridge now). They need to vocalize that offer VERY soon. Many (in the forums) have already gone or are planning to move on from HPalm and if HPalm really is concerned about a bad reputation from this, they need to respond QUICKLY to save a little face. Responding, "in the coming months" will guarantee a fairly serious loss of hard core customers who have been more than willing to talk up webOS to everyone they know. Just one customer (who frequents this site) should be worth a few more customers to HPalm with how much people (have) loved this OS.
^^ This
What is the jonnybryce thing mentioned in that post?
Can anyone reconcile how the CEO proclaims a new practice of announce/release and then they immediately don't follow it? Any rational reason at all???
he created the youtube video that mimiced the iphone 4 video of a couple of month ago.
he doesnt like hp. and wanted a 1000 phone.
No, this is it from yesterday (nsfw):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI056nhaduk
Yeah, not surprised they are not fans of jonnybryce.
That video was so true
I actually like HP and Palm a lot. I just expected a little more and a little sooner and not a more powerful Pre3 and the tablet that was already leaked.
:)
All I know is that Summer better mean 'June' and not August, or HP will get trampled by the iPhone 5 hype. Sprint better factor in for it as well.
I see you making that 1000 comment a lot. The phone I described is not unlike many phones out or coming out today, such as th Atrix or iPhone 4, except for the increased 32gb option would could be more expensive since 16 would allow a more reasonable price.
Either way, that was a Treo fantasy. We're allowed to dream. The Pre3 is a great device for today. Today being the issue.
I wonder how the Precentral gang feels about all of this. They seem to be keeping their opinions to themselves.
please the precentral gang have been down on hp/palm for a while (just listen to their palmcast), im sure they arent surprised.
I would say they are skeptical, at least. My favorite was during the live blogging of the event. Dieter posted that they revealed the Pre 3. He then posted, "Someone in the audience moaned." I laughed so hard I got in trouble at work.
I wonder too. I'd like a front-page article on what their thoughts are.
I'd like a front-page article on their "WTF?!?" interview with Apotheker about ship dates vs. his promise a few weeks ago - that's what I'd like!
Response to an email to Customer Relations:
Thank you for taking the time to email HP. HP regrets the inconvenience and disappointment that this news has caused. Please watch for new updates as they unfold.
Regards,
CEO Customer Relations
Same canned response as the "in the coming months".... was/is.
Got the same response to my email to Apotheker.
Thx HP for making my switch to a different device easier. It was definitely worth waiting!! F. !
It's amazing how all the potential "good news" is always so vague, but the "bad news" is direct and to the point. (See: "in the coming months" and then "no OTA updates" for examples.)
When was the last time we had good news that turned out to be actual good news from Palm/HP
The pre releases, with incomplete o/s.
Software updates improve battery live by .6%
Video is finally available so you can stop carrying your Tracphone.
Redoing the partitians will allow more apps to fit and make it possible to copy the apps for free (where did the developers go?).
Video will bring Flash.
HP will save Palm.
WebOS 2.0 will bring Flash.
All devices will get 2.0
Twas the week after Christmas, WebOS 2.0 and Flash goodness to come at no cost.
Leo says announcement, with products in only weeks to follow.
I got this response...
RE: Feedback to CEO and President Léo Apotheker
Thank you for taking the time to email HP. HP regrets the inconvenience and disappointment; we are working to get answers out to the WebOS community. HP appreciates your patience.
Regards,
CEO Customer Relations
Heavely discounted Pre 2 and all will be forgiven(Lets face it us oldies are the only ones who would bother with it). I hope its sooner than latter for the sake of webOS.
I thought this way as well. At first. But I actually don't wanna spend some 100 bucks on a pre 2 and another few hundreds in summer. This way, HP is actually charging us money for an update that was promised FREE.
Pre 3 in like march or april with a BIG discount for legacy customers - that would have been a path I would be willing to follow.
I think as long as it's discounted to around 50 bucks that's fair because you are getting better hardware. The OS is the freebie. And of course not locking us into another 2 friggin years of misery. Also maybe giving us the option to upgrade this Summer for a discount off of the new products.
The only thing with what I just said though is that the Pre2 is only on Verizon so I don't know what other legacy users can get unless they are releasing all of the other products on all previous carriers. Hmmmmmm
I just want what was promised. I don't care how it's done.(OTA,CPU,HOMEBREW) As long as it ends up on my phone I'm cool.
Or give me a fantastic deal on the Pre3($150 on contract for Pre users)
"Have a touchstone! On me!" Hahaha
How could HP extend such a generous gesture like their donation to webOS Internals, and then pull this OTA non-update stuff in the same day?! Aaaaarrrggh!
They can't gesture at all. They eliminated gestures, dummy!
They created a new gesture yesterday.
After reading the no OTA upgrade, I had my own gesture, but it didn't do anything for my screen.
Two comments.
One, Mad props to Dieter on the use of the word kerfuffle in an article.
Two, all we've heard lately (before Black Wednesday) from HP is how they're the biggest technology firm in the galaxy, and how their scale is bigger than anyone elses. Is it really that hard to give us a Dr. version of 2.x when you're the empire?
Nothing less than a redaction of the previous statement or a free (or extremely discounted) Pre 2 on existing plans will do. We deserve that much.
Like it'll ever happen. When my pet pigs fly. Until then, I'll be rocking 2.0.1 on my Pre Plus.
Wait, that post is only about not getting an OTA update? And not outdated hardware on most major carriers? :sadface Worthless I couldn't careless about no OTA update.
I was told by a support representative that they will release the updates when they are ready.
well now we know why Matias Duarte left hPalm
More wait and see! Thanks HP! (It rhymes, and is now my official slogan for HP)
You are gonna get a free bumper sticker from HP stating "HP, where loyalty is a one way street" followed by a graphic of the one finger salute....... It will be sent to your home address in "the coming months".
We’re working on something that we hope will help make things right for you. We’ll be sharing the specifics with you when they’re ready
1. This kind of "non" answer is exactly what got you into this situation.
2. Share now, hours, not days.
3. Make it RIGHT, not 'riiight'.
4. What about fixing the problem of not having any users for your developers to develop for? By the time you ship anything new almost all of your users will have reached the end of their contract and moved on to whatever the newest available device is.
They are working on something "in the coming months" I'm sure ....
Discounted Veer for Pixi users... Please?
Buy a touchpad get a free pre 3 off contract.
That is what would keep me.
I agree that's about all that would keep me too.
Seconded :)
HP's just dangling a carrot in our face...
i will take it as lies still and just putting this out till the outrage has subsided. this is their way of trying to minimize p.r damages
I am simply not convinced that HP really hears us.
We're meant to evalangilize this platform and get this treatment? Keep your existing hardware, android or ubuntu will come to the rescue (I hope). HP have already said goodbye to palm, so I feel less guilty, it's been a great decade.
A thanks for being a diehard fan & free advertisement, could be putting it on Sprint. just sayin :P
This is hilarious. How many times can one company screw up. Don't they learn from their previous mistakes? Pre was announced 6 months before it came out. It came out outdated out of the gate. What does HP do: same exact shit. Announce something good and then fuck it up by adding "Available this summer". Idiots
How many times can you lie to your users before those same users leave for another device. WebOS 2.0 upgrades, flash, etc. Enough already. Just sell your cards and notification idea to either google or apple and be done with it. No matter how good the platform is, its going no where without developer support. Freaking WebOS app store still sucks filled with gazillion useless apps
Seriously, why would anyone ever trust HP? Have they not shown themselves to be predators and parasites? They lied to keep the user base around and then simply thought you would all do as your told like good b@tches and lick the hand of your master. Is WebOS good? Of course. But, does that mean a new WebOS device should be a 2011 symbol of you being subservient? HPs actions just didn't happen and were not a mistake. They just know that most of you will be obedient. Why not go away for a year and see how the platform shapes up. You all do realize that 'coming in the Summer' extends to near the end of September and this coming from a group who has not met a deadline yet? Having used Froyo, it really wasn't that bad by the time you juiced it up a bit - not any different that WebOS, eh??? Gingerbread will be fine and you'll be able to see where RIM takes their new OS as well. HP is what they are. You don't have to empower them to continue. Come back to them, but only when they have earned it. Always completely up to you, if wanting to stand on your hind legs is important.
I don't want anything from them but what they repeatedly promised, updates to my Sprint Pre that will allow it to do things it should have done form the start: Mic API's, flash, email that doesn't bog down, etc.
I have no problem that this can't be done OTA, I'm capable to do it with the PC. I just want this so I can enjoy what time my phone has left.
AMEN to that!! And once again a wanna take te opportunity to say a big Thank You HP for f-ing us so hard it's so easy now to move on to something else. Screw you, too!!!
Battered WebOS User Syndrome
BWUS
BWOSUS
BatWebOSUSYN
BatWosUsrSyn That is My Favorite!
Anyone Have something better?
I swore that if they did not announce something truly awesome, I was going android. the only awesomeness I saw was the interaction between touchpad and pre3. yet I find myself compelled to stick around. they did promise not to hit us in the face anymore... only in the leg, and only half strength.
Make Sprint the first carrier of the Pre3 at $99 & BOGO for current (not former) Pre(-) owners. That would make me happy :)
Anything that makes me switch carriers?? Not happy :(
No need for Sprint to carry anything *first*. Seriously, HP is big enough to launch on just about any number of carriers at the same time. There's no excuse for them to go exclusive with any one carrier when they so desperately need to build market share.
A free Pre2 that works on Sprint would do it for me right now. I still may drop this platform after all of this and just get an iphone. I'm a first day pre owner on my 9th pre and not happy with what I see. Too much waiting for promises....
I think everyone's comments summed it up for me. One word, FAIL!
For what it's worth. Wrote an email to the HP CEO earlier today. Got this response:
Thank you for taking the time to email HP. HP regrets the inconvenience and disappointment; we are working to get answers out to the WebOS community. HP appreciates your patience.
Regards,
CEO Customer Relations
"HP appreciates your patience"... just keep waiting some more. We made you wait already for about 8-10 months, now if you can just wait another 6 months, we'll have over a year of you just waiting... and waiting ...and waiting...
Am I disappointed that my Pre Minus won't be getting an OTA update? Yep. Is it enough to make me walk away from webOS? Nope.
Sometimes it's just too much of a pain in the ass to get the new software to run on the old hardware. Remember about 10 years ago when Steve Jobs announced that Apple would be ditching Classic Mac OS and rewriting OS X from the ground up? Sure, a lot of people bitched about it at the time, but in the end Jobs made the right decision.
Granted, the change from webOS 1.x to 2 is not as dramatic. But I'm willing to cut Palm/HP some slack if they continue to pour a lot of improvements into webOS 2.
+1 i agree @brassplayer, i was disappointed that 2.0 will not be coming to the pre and to be honest i am just waiting to replace my pre with another webos device and i am sure most of you guys are too, like it or lump it, we are not getting the update. HP said they will make things right, non of the handsets are available yet until summer so i will give HP until then to make ''things right'', I will be happy if they gave me a good discount on the pre3 or on the touchpad.
you know what, F!that! We've been given HP too much already, and look what's happening...we're being treated like drug addict bitches that now need to blow some too in order to get some scraps. Time to f-ing move on!!!
*we've given
The only way to affect change is to boycott, protest, raise caine! It's time to demand better from the company we have grown to love for their forward looking products! They knew last year that they had no intntions of backwards compatibility. Yet we were lead to believe that this or that enhancement was ..wait for it...COMING SOON to your WebOs product! I call bulls&%*! Now Pre3 guess what folks it's not ready for primetime either! Can you say smokin mirrors!
You forget that HP *told us* that Web OS 2.0 would be available on the older hardware. It wasn't just wishful thinking that people were hoping for this. HP TOLD us. Then changed their minds.
Just like how -- a few weeks ago -- the CEO told us that they wouldn't announce something until it was almost shipping. Then they turn around and announce "summer."
Why do you believe anything they say, now?
The thing is, I don't even really care about 2.0. I just want Flash. They've been promising Flash much longer than 2.0 and its even been demoed. That's really the only think lacking in the original Pres, except for a larger screen.
You have to be kidding, WebOS is not that good, Sure it has a few strong points, but what Don't just say its good. There is nothing it has over any other operating system at the 1.4.5 level.
I agree a free Pre 2 would be alright considering their limited and near obsolete already.
THe comparison of Mac is way off. That would be a comparison of Palm OS to WebOS. Obviously their own company thinks its bad. I mean their terrible at PR and they felt how bad of a move this was. Their essentially ditching 100k-500k users. No one has one of the other devices, to hurt the only users that would likely comprise majority of their upgrades is crazy beyond a doubt.
Can I see it not becoming available on the Pixi, yes and only because you knew you were getting a lesser item at the time of purchase. Just a way to be on webOS. I didn't even agree with the release of it and thought it hurt the reputation of the Pre from the start. Though it seems if they can hurt their reputatio to them it makes them confirm they have one.
Yet, it is time for them to get over that , we all acknowledge there is a company now act like one.
To say you wouldn't get rid of WebOS. Have you seen an Iphone device, have you seen how many glitches and incorrect integration there is. You can go 1/10th the way. You can say we integrate everything and then stop at basic levels. It really seems like if they had the phone operating like an android platform or iOS the way it was intended they would get so excited they couldn't handle the company.
How is it the most difficult platform to develop for, yet it has the least customization? There are thousands of developers and not one has been bias to the platforms they develop on yet, most skip Palm and not because of the low numbers of sales.
There really isn't one palm development company. When you think about it if one company knew the ins and outs of the device they would be make 1000's of quality applications and own the market and nearly be able to gain some control of the company (in a good way) from development. 300,000,000 American not one legitimate development company? Every time someone has an Idea on Apple it pops out of 10 different companies. yet i know throw a 100's of legitimate structured ideas at this company and haven't seen one corrected. Not even basic errors of the protocol of missed calls.
brassplayer, we all know theres always one to jump sides but even the bad players of Palm and HP can look down on you for this one. The improvements from 1.4.5. to 2. are large considering how basic 1.4.5 is. Flash, youtube log in, facebook chat, document editing, word correction. It is a reasonable argument 1.4.5 is basically beta though no one wants to say a company has left people on a beta platform for 2.5 years and tossed them.
Don't get me started about getting abandoned be crApple!!!
Except for the fact that people WERE actually running the new software on the old hardware. That kind of points to it being "too difficult" as the lie that it is.
Ok, small "toldya" moment here. Remember that app limit bug that everyone freaked out about about a year ago? The one that was "fixed" by having the app directory stored in the media directory?
I distinctly remember saying that Palm could fix the problem by making a virtual FS to store the apps, but a permanent solution would require a complete re-image of the phone.
*coughs*
The app limit bug is coming back to roost. That, in part, is why an OTA update to 2.0 can't happen. Any version of webOS 2.x works on currently available hardware will require a re-image and Palm won't push that OTA because it'll piss off more people than the bait-and-switch of the upgrade path that didn't happen.
Shhhh.
You're being reasonable.
Go with the HP are bad line like the rest of the herd
This would be absolutely, totally reasonable if HP had not *promised* that it would be available. Multiple times. People keep forgetting this, it seems.
My guess is that they knew/decided in December (if not earlier) that there would be no 2.0 upgrade for current devices, but knew that people would bolt to other platforms if they said so at the time. So they continued to tell us that we'd have the upgrade until yesterday, hoping that the other announcements would keep us waiting for the new hardware.
Why are you OK with being lied to?
If HP had not *repeatedly* told us that we would get this upgrade, it would not be such a big deal that they are not providing it. It's the lie that is bothering people. I'm sure when it was first said, they meant it. But it's hard to believe they were actively working on making this upgrade come to existing phones until *yesterday*, when they suddenly changed their minds.
In addition to the fact that they undoubtedly didn't change their mind just yesterday, they should have had this "plan" to make it good all worked out before yesterday. So then when they "unfortunately" have to break it to us that they are not going to update our phones, they could follow it up by telling us the plan of how they are going to make it up to us. If they can tell us Sprint users that they plan will include us staying on Sprint, I might be able to consider sticking around. But we don't know what this plan is and with other broken promises, no one knows what to believe. They need to announce the way they are going to make it up to us now or they've already lost us. Some of us are under contract with Sprint and/or like Sprint service, and we have no choice but to go to Android if they don't provide a Sprint Centered "making it up to us" plan.
I personally think yesterday is pretty much a too little too late day of announcements. I love WebOs and so I really want to stick with them, but I am starting to wonder if its going to go the way of Betamax VCR's (arguably the better product, but just didn't survive)
Wow. Did you wait an entire two months with your Pre? Oh the horror. What a living hell you've been through.
I can't believe a company like HP wouldn't spend time reverse engineering 2.0 to put them on a two year old phone. It's madness. I wish they would waste time on that instead of working on the latest webOS version.
No, I don't give a shit. I'm happy with my Pre. You people are acting like HP killed your children. It's laughable.
"No, I don't give a shit. I'm happy with my Pre. You people are acting like HP killed your children. It's laughable. "
Ignore your rights and they go away.
This sets a precedent (hell, continues a precedent); you're treating it like an isolated event.
It isn't.
Six months so far, not two. I've been with Sprint for over 12 years, so an entitled to an upgrade once every 12 months, even under their newer, less nice plan. Living hell? I never claimed that, nor anything remotely close to that. What's wrong with you?
While the Pre- is indeed just over 1-1/2 years old (not 2), the Pre+ is significantly newer than that. It got dropped as well. Note: I don't care when a phone was announced. I care when it was *released*.
And look at the competition. While Android phones are a very mixed lot, with some getting updates and others getting dropped, Apple upgrades its devices for quite some time before dropping support. Longer than 2 years, it seems. HP will be measured not against an arbitrary standard, but against their competition. When you are in last place, you have to do better, not worse.
And here's the point you seemingly miss: After dropping 2.0 support for legacy hardware, the developer now has no-one to develop for. While 2.0 can run older apps (so we hear), apps developed for 2.0 won't run on older hardware. Who is going to waste their time developing for a device that won't have a significant number of users until "summer," if ever?
reposted from HP blog: I understand the thinking that "in the coming Months" affords Devs enough time to build and port apps to WebOS 3. With the loyal fan base, those of us that still have launch day Pre minus on Sprint, stores would sell out by tomorrow if these 3 products were there today. Give us the devices, and we will drive the app developement, just look at the Homebrew community. How can you say you are going to "make things right" if you don't already know that Sprint is going to carry the products. The Pre3 and the TouchPad are better than anything on the market right now. So was the Pre when you announced it, but by Summer, the market had passed it by. The market will pass these products by, and WebOS cannot afford that a setback like that, not again. We bought the Pre, but I can't say that I would buy a passed over product again. My wife refused an iPad, and 10 seconds into the presentation for the TouchPad, she wanted one. The loyal Sprint customers have watched you give everyone else what we should have gotten on day one, and we stayed loyal, now after so much sacrifice, you ask us for more. Launch the products, and you will have an Army of supporters, demanding that Developers get out updates. The demand already exists, your initial sales are not going to be to new customers, they will be us. We will be the force that brings in the new customers. Think beyond new customers, and secure the current customers, or lose us, and fail at trying to rebuild a base as loyal as us. PalmIV to Pre minus...will the story continue...
Im not going to wait around.
I've been had by a half hearted attempt at bringing the things that made palm os great into the 21 century. Now that I've tested the waters for them for the last couple years, they're ready to release the real product. I don't get to participate. My loyalty ended 2-9-11.
I've waited long enough.
I'm going to look at a Blackberry tomorrow.

Unless the "something" is a way to get 2.0 on my current device, this will be the last HP device I ever own.
HP is the LARGEST personal computer company in the world. They can't afford the resources to make over the air updates work? Well, then I can't afford the resources to ever trust them again. Don't the suits realize they made this promise just 2 months ago.
(My guess is that the "something" they're considering is a freakin coupon towards the purchase of a new device. The only question is whether it will be $25 or $50 off. They can stuff their coupon.)
I'll happily take your coupon.
Here's the thing. It's too late. HP has already driven away too many people, with more leaving by the day. Their decisions as of late have been ill thought out. They are out of time. By the time the Pre3 is out ("Summer"? Ha!) other phones of that time will be as good or better. The Pre3 hardware will be nothing special by the summer. And HP has to know that there are many, many, many people with phones barely hanging on with nothing to upgrade to right now but iPhone and Android and RIM and other non WebOS choices.
Even if I were willing to wait, a Pre3 that comes out this "summer" won't help me. Even if it does actually come out this summer. Even if it actually comes out on my carrier (Sprint). It just doesn't matter if my phone dies before that point (which is highly likely) and I have already left for another platform.
HP says they have heard us, and to watch for later developments. Ha. Were they REALLY that surprised, caught off guard, by the strength of people's reactions? If so, then they are too clueless to succeed. If not, then they made a failed gamble on a business decision. Either way, they profoundly screwed up. I mean really, who -- after waiting until CES, and then waiting until yesterday -- is now willing to wait a further *unspecified* amount of time to see what MIGHT happen? Give me a break.
HP has squandered the good will of the existing community and now asks us to wait. Longer.
No.
Screw Palm, Screw HP, this is beyond frustrating to know that so many followers and supporters have just literally been flipped the finger from HP/Palm. We now have to buy new devices to get what was originally promsied to us. I am done with HP/Palm my contract is up with Sprint in July, Hopefully the new Iphone will be out then and I will go to Verizon or Blackberry on one of the other carriers. This is so lame. On top of it all, HP promised devices would be quickly available following the announcement, not in the summer why even bother to announce it now? Love Webos, definitely not down with being screwed!!! Hope everyone else follows. Obviously HP can't get it together.
How can they make things right with Pre Minus owners when they seemingly plan on releasing nothing to sprint? I, honestly, would be fine if they didnt continually promise and tell us that we would get this and that. The Pre3 is very nice, but underwhelming (no HDMI, and same form factor that give the same appearance to the average user of the Pre, which was a huge failure).
I, for one, plan on switching to android (although the thought pains me). I can not see sticking it out with WebOS when they keep delivering underwhelming and late to the game products on slow time lines. WebOS on a computer would be great, but i am sure they will find some way to fuck it up also.
JRub, if he is heading all of this, needs shit canned, they move like a runner in the senior olympics when smartphones are traveling at the speed of an indy car...they should be embarrassed and disappointed in the fact that they have failed a great OS!
HDMI isn't a standard, herp derp.
With the 2.x debacle. They have lost ALL credibility with the webOS community. We will believe it when we see it. And where not holding our breaths
And to think I could've had an upgrade back in july of 2010, holding on to this piece of crap phone for what?
holding on "for the coming months". Exactly what HP wants you to keep doing.
wait some more... wait for it... wait for it... "in the coming months"
in other news if you navigate to a page with flash on it with your pre and click install flash player the old message pops back up that adobe is working with palm and doing intensive testing. this statement was removed before webos 2...... hmmmm what was the point (haha) was announced saying that flash player would never be available for webos. come on adobe this has been years in the coming now release the dam player it obviously works on the old pres pre pluses >:-O getting sick of these lies wait and see wait and see oh and if anyone reads this that actually works for HP that was a nice gesture... thanks for buying webos based phones in the past we no longer want you , we only want new cumstomers. that was the message. next time i need a new printer or one of them runs out of ink i might just say, you know what thanks for the years of using hp printers and buying ur over priced ink its time to move on and be a new customer elsewhere F.U.
sigh
Too little, too late. Nothing will make me buy anything from HP again.
Had the same bullshit from ASUS' poor quality motherboards about 6 years ago and they subsequently lost out on 4 mobos, 3 netbooks, a boatload of peripheral equipment and every person that ever consulted me for equipment... Oh, and seeing as I've been responsible for the company's tech purchasing in that time, naturally this extended there too.
Not that HP will give a shit, seeing as they are immense, but whatever... Their equipment is junk anyway so no great loss.
To anyone that's staying, I hope it works out for you, those leaving, I hope we find something suitable... As for me, this creaky preoreo is getting ditched and I'll stop visiting as soon as contract ends in April / Atrix released in Switzerland.
It's been a mainly disappointing ride, but the homebrew community get a lot of props for having saved me launching this fucking thing out the window on several occasions. Roll on April!
Exactly, too little too late. Im giving my money to the devil now (Steve Jobs)
hopefully this pre minus crap will last till july when my contract is up, so long HP webos and good riddance Sprint
here is an egg, please sit on it until it hatches - it will, honest! have we ever lied to you?
i see hp dumping webos in the near future for their lack of inovation on hardware. The os is great but they keep making the same stupid mistake with the damn vertical slider, their delay in release. The last one i think is the most crucial mistake. They like to copy the hardware of iphone and ipad. I get that. They are the most succesful in the mobile business right now but if you release hardware to compete with soon to be obsolete hardware, what do they expect to gain from that. Is this how they think they will gain market share? I am in no way an analyst of any sort, but does it really take one to see that this is a really bad strategy?
"They like to copy the hardware of the iphone" ... Can you explain what you meant?
This is starting to get gay. "Coming weeks, months, this summer" It's kinda like a cop setting up for an accident but there isn't one. He has all the cones and flares out but now one is slowing down everyone is just wizzing by. HP made a accident by announcing this 4 months early... They should have had just the developer thing. The pad is out dated and unless they can have 10,000 or more apps on the touchPad release date it's game over.
here is $50.. buy yourself something nice..
i dont see it possible. there is hardly any pre2 users. it will not sell well at all on verizon whenever it actually gets realeased. they are bleeding users and developers for pre/plus models and not to mention that is now abandoned. Its a complete disaster in my opinion. by june i project that we will be around 6500 apps at best.
My feelings:

With a large donation to webOS internals and now stating that they will be working on something for the early Pres and Pixis, it shows HP/Palm has not forgotten this community. All you haters, if you are really that miserable, then leave, please!
keep that bag tightly secured around your head, and dont worry HP certainly wont give you the reach around
webOS Internals =/= legacy users.
All this announcement shows is that they still like using vague language to put forth some vague promise that they may keep.
How about a free Pre 2 with no change in upgrade date. SO then I can use webOS2.0, and decide if I want to go with a Pre 3 when my upgrade date comes around.
Yes, the phone is way too slow at 500mhz. But Every Pre I've come across, over-clocked to 800mhz with out any trouble at all. That would match the new veer. I hope to see a hack for WebOS 2.0 with an 800mhz over-clock built in. That would make me happy. No need to waste a phone that CAN run 2.0.....
Sadly, my Pre- is not stable at 800 MHz. Oh well, just not lucky.
Hello Ms. Thomas,
I am writing because I have been a devoted consumer to the original palm pre. This email is in response to HP's (palm's) announcement that we will not receive the webos 2.0 update that numerous webos followers have been waiting for since the initial release of the pre. HP now has a base of supporters of the current webos products that feels as though they have been given the shaft regarding webos 2.0/flash 10.1. Now you announce that you are abandoning the your original pre product. This doesn't sit well with myself and numerous other pre owners. Perhaps you would advise your board to review the precentral.net website and review the comments posted there and rate their satisfaction of there decision. We were promised a product that would have certan features. We waited patiently to no avail. No we're being told to forget it? Not fair and I have lost faith in the handy dandy standby of "In the Coming Months" I hope HP will reconsider there decision regarding the updates for the palm pre and upgrade to webos 2.0 or the availability of a newer product at a discounted rate. I have been eligible for an upgrade since july of 2010 and have waited patiently for a new product to be released or my current product to be upgraded. Now I continue to wait along with other webos supporters. Frankly we're all tired of waiting and if we wait until summer to purchase your new line of webos products, they will by then be outdated and something newer will be available. I hope to see webos make it. It truly is the best product regarding the smartphone market. I'm at a complete loss and ready to resign myself to android devce or rim, until HP gets the products and the products perform as advertised? Please forward a copy of this email to the board of directors or to whom ever can get webos up to par and out to it followers while it's not too late?
Thank you,
maybe some more people should email HP Board of Directors? bod@hp.com
Fix the grammar, clean it up, and add some breaks.
HP won't take it seriously otherwise.
But that's implying that they would even take it seriously in the first place . . . sigh.
you actually think HP will take it seriously at all? They dont care one bit about their users, they care about people buying as many products as they can so they can earn as much coin as possible.
kids running lemonade stands have better buisness practices than HP/palm...pathetic!
Face it: Sprint has been mute on this because it's just not coming. We can muse all day long about what kind of a deal we want, but they're not even being manufactured for use on Sprint.
Lame, but they don't care.
