HP: investing in webOS; still pumped for webOS Tablet 48
HP is in the midst of their Securities Analyst Meeting right now and we're awaiting a presentation by Personal Systems Group Executive Vice President Todd Bradley, who yesterday told the world he didn't want HP to try be Apple. He'll be on at 3:15 Pacific and we'll let you know if he drops any news.
Before he does, though, it looks like his presentation slides are out and available for download and so we did, gleaning the information you see above. Looks as if Bradley is confirming our earlier rumor that they had sent more than 200 employees over to Palm. Additionally, he's noting an acceleration in the number of apps available for webOS since the acquisition and promising "accelerated investments in product development."
As you might guess, it's impossible for somebody from HP to discuss webOS without mentioning Tablets and (sigh) printers and so the next two slides make it clear it's on the agenda: HP apparently sees webOS as being in the center of a whole slew of different types of devices and believes that webOS is "Built to grow beyond smartphones," noting that it "scales seamlessly across multiple screen sizes and devices." That's a point we've been making for some time now, but knowing that HP believes it after (presumably) using it on something other than 320x480 (Pre) or 320x400 (Pixi) is heartening.
We'll be listening in live and update you if and when Bradley fills in the gaps from these powerpoint slides - the rest of which you can see after the break!

Wow everybody's enraged on earlier stories lol
Get ready for all the "I need a new phone" comments.
I wish these slides put a new Palm super-phone in my pocket...
...Is that about what you expected?
:-)
Pretty much. lol
Can you blame us?! This is a phone blog! It seems like they are mentioning everything except phones. We want new phones because most of us have had ours since day 1.While iphones are pumping out every year even better then the last. Its called keeping up or doing better then the competition and they are loosing in the hardware department and maybe one day in the OS.I know we could keep our phones for two years blah, blah, blah. New Phone! Lol
+1
This is PreCentral not webosTabletCentral
The previous comment is full of wholesome awesomeness!
1 bajillion% agree. yes that's right. a bajillion.

comment deleted due to stupid double comment.
iPhone wasnt perfect at the beginning. But they really had no competition either. Palm has just got started in the business of full touchscreen smart phones with apps and all. Plus, they had a transition of ownership and moving people around. I can understand if they dont have an annual release right now. Once they get the ball moving though, I think it will be awesome. Especially with HP backing them.
I agree with some of the points you have made but have you seen some of palms patents? They been doing this longer then apple in the phone department. As a matter of fact, palm could sue apple for infringement over a dozen patents.I just don't like how things are being done but I'll wait and see.O I forgot that fast.I hae been waiting! Lol.All in all I love WebOs and that's why I express myself like I do.Its tough love.I don't want them to flop or fade in the smoke of apples tailpipe.
Regarding patents, and Palm being out ahead of Apple and many others, it's a good point. An attorney-colleague of mine once suggested to "Listen for the dog that isn't barking." In this case - who is Apple -not- suing ...? They always seem to give (formerly little ol') Palm a wide berth ;-)
Cheers,
Eric

Yea pretty much screw Web OS 2.0 for now I need new hardware! I am tired of it taking 30+ seconds sometime just to load the camera with nothing else running...
Really? 30+ seconds? That sucks.
Yea with 1GHz overclock... I guess I could reboot more often but really why should I have too? The lack of RAM on the Pre (-) is really killing the user experience for me... I am not sure about everyone else tho...
I agree that's why I hope that they can integrate that new software that quick boots while the os is loading.I think they bought it from Phoenix Technologies.
I wish these slides told me something new :/
Yey for pushing down bad publicity articles without removing them.
All and all, nothing new here. Move along.
yeah, bring it on, mr Bradley - I want to hear from HP something that FINALLY makes any sense, or else... :-)
This first embedded picture after the text is showing the same picture as the second embedded picture after the text. Anyone else getting that problem?
yup
Went and grabbed the slides directly. Slide 10 is the missing slide. I wonder what that car in 2015 means (it's a really nice car...)
[edit] forgot the link
[edit2] Link is to long to post and didn't automagically turn into one. So here's a forum link.
[edit3] seriously...

I don't think I've seen some of these icons before for the phone and calendar. Are those new? It still has the green dialer, so it's not quite the same as we've seen from webos 2.0 shots.
edit:
Wait, take that back. Just noticed the same icons are on precentral's logo. Were they updated to what they look like now?
I want webOS 2.0 I don;t care about new hardware because I usually keep my phone for at least 2 years...
Anyway when the GPU will come to actiion in 2.0 regular pres and pixis will be blazing fast!
I hear you there. All I have to say to the people clamoring for a new palm phone is where do you get the money to be buying a new smartphone every year? The Pre is barely a year old, the Pixi not even. WebOS 2.0 is all I need.
Some people can get upgrade prices every year, not every two years. The Pre Plus came out on AT&T back on May 16th of 2010, and what many people are looking for is to see if they will be getting a new WebOS device, or just giving up on waiting. Remember, June of 2009 is when the original Palm Pre came out on Sprint, so June of 2011 is when the initial Pre users would be at the two year mark.
One thing that I think many people want is a larger screen. and that is a part of the desire for new devices. With the 1GHz kernels, the Pre and Pre Plus is competitive with other devices on the market, but the screen size COULD use a bump to 3.9 inches.
Its not necessarily about buying new phones but about having new hardware that gets consumers excited about webOS. Which then makes devs want to make apps for webOS. Which makes webOS popular and more devs making more apps, etc. Then those of us who own Pre/Pixis have more app selection and can use our phones for longer by adding more functionality through the app catalog.
so far pres hardware is ok it's not so outdated omap etc... they are still selling phones with android and similar hardware to pres and nobody seems to care...
There is not a lot tech savy ppl... they care about apps and how fast the os is so stop ur wining about new hardware and sprint premier discount coz I have it and I havent used it yet...
So you're telling me devs need more than two pieces of hardware to even start getting excited about developing? I call BS, sir!
somehow apple got 1 iphone and nobody is bitching that u need at least 4 form factors and new hardware
devs need consumers to be excited about a platform to see the value in developing for it. Right now there isn't all that much consumer interest in webOS but a new phone with good specs and an optimized OS would start to attract consumers.
Yes I agree completely. webOS isn't even at 2.0 yet and taking full advantage of all the hardware and tech that's been around since last year. I could use another 256mb of RAM, but my original Pre is holding its own.
I'm with you, not easy to shell out another $200 or $300 every year to have the latest and greatest tech and I'm hopeful they make my Pre all that it can be. Sorli...
THANK YOU. People on MY side.
Now we just need it to allow better app scaling over multiple screen sizes...
*yawn* ..... seeing is believing, October 11th - Desire HD here I come (UK user here), I'll be back to whatever Palm has got out - seeing as it'll probably get a delayed release in Europe anyway.
new phones :-)
Note - not only adding 200 people to Palm but to the global business unit. Fantastic! Palm needs to get global to get the momentum and apps. Sorry but the US isn't big enough (anymore?) to support a smartphone OS ecosystem and Palm never had the muscle to get global. Go HP!
It is definitely big enough. The problem is that the market is dominated by iPhone and Android.
Again, I'm sorry to maybe hurt anyones feelings, but ignoring 500 million people in the EU that iOS, Android, RIM, Nokia etc are catering to is not ok. Just now Todd Bradley was talking about the importance of the 100 million people that HP/Palm needs to work with in Brazil, as an example of new markets. Japan, Korea, China etc. are very strong and important markets. Focusing on 300 million people in the US - not enough.. and a recipe for failure.
Just think of the failure of having people in the EU countries where Palm is not officially selling not being able to buy apps. Legally bought phones, it's not even gray market, and users and developers are missing out on apps and markets respectively. Most importantly Palm misses out on 30% of app-taxes, for free, just because they failed to handle the internal market of the EU. That's why HP will save webOS :)
+1 and I am from Texas. Texas is sort of a different country.
HP's global reach is one of its strengths. I don't know why people here would diminish that fact or seemingly deny that the better the phone does, the more apps will be developed & more money will be reinvested to the next device.
I was going to mention Brazil, but you beat me to it. Some may want to look at the actual slides or listen to the presentation prior to being so critical. HP is not just a phone company. They are a tech company w/phones as one part of it. AND, the reason HP bought Palm was for webOS. If that wasn't clear before, it certainly should be by now.
Like others, I am here for the phone, but I understand its success is intertwined in the GLOBAL company known as HP.
BTW - Todd said "PalmPad" :)
hop there are 4 form factors that way every three months there be a refresh that should keep you guys satisfied
wow, this conference is really boring...
You've got an error in the link to the larger slides from above. The left image link should be:

Again, signs of a flawed strategy.
It is harder to make people fond of their printers, printers are by nature and function non-personal devices. Attempting to make it personal by giving it a touch (personal and intimate) interface and making it directly connected to the web (addressable) even, will take lot of work.
In a mobile/phone-centric consumer landscape, delivering what is widely popular and making it widely available (on things like a printer) is a strategy that stands a better chance of success. Not the other way around.
Strategy aside, and while I hate to be critical, I fail to see the consumer appeal or the utility of a touch-based interface that's permanently tethered to a printer. And promoting the idea of a "smart"-printer seems ridiculous for the reasons I mentioned earlier.
It might only make sense on the other hand for enterprises like university campuses and large organizations with centralized printing stations that might definitely benefit from smarter printers that can be customizesd for various print queue management scenarios.
Anyway, I wait to see what type of marketing push HP will bring to their webOS devices.
I think they're thinking more of the interface of WebOS. Surfing the web on your printer is just a freebee. Have you ever tried to use the menu on the printer? It's frustrating. Imagine wanting to check ink levels and pulling up launcher and tapping on the ink level icon. Or pulling up your photos from your phone via the cloud, then printing one. A lot of times we can see something work because we haven't used it in real life. My copying machine at work will scan documents and send a pdf to any email. I use that all the time. Why couldn't my printer do that?
