HP logo sidles up to Palm brand 72

by Dieter Bohn Thu, 28 Oct 2010 11:19 am EDT

  HP logo on Palm Building

We already noted that with the unveiling of webOS 2.0, Palm webOS was rebranded as HP webOS. With that update, the Palm Developer Portal had a new logo with the HP circle preceding the Palm name. As Phone News notes, that new logo has made its way across Palm's entire site now.

It's not just web pages that have been updated. Steve Lemke, one of our favorite "Senior Bit Twiddlers" at Palm posted up a photo on Facebook indicating that the signs for the Palm buildings are also losing their orange Palm circle and getting converted to HP, as you see above.

It remains to be seen whether the Palm brand will hang around for mobile products, but given that none other than HP executive vice president Todd Bradley saw fit to drop the PalmPad name multiple times at an HP event last month and the Pre 2 is hanging on to the Palm branding as well, we're still of the mind that phones and tablets will keep the Palm branding while printers, toasters, and whatever else HP sees fit to use webOS on will probably get the HP branding. We'll see.

Change is in the air

HPad, hows that for name? though HP Tab may be better.

I want my WebOS Printer!! BTW the comercial with the baby definitely had a WebOS device (tablet??) on it, I wish I had a screen shot of it... Will definitely have to locate that!

u are a noob. know what that means? look it up. if u have read this site or bothered to google the hp printer shown there u would know that it is actually already for sale annnnd it runs android with a yahoo interface... come on know guy

I believe you mean "come on now guy" but in either case you obviously have me mistaken for someone else... troll...

Wow... grow up a little...

Well he IS right about the printer.

Well stil no need to be an ass about it...

Anyways this looks very WebOS-ish to me anyways... And yes I did read about that on the forums I just saw it on TV last night... People should not just assume

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n192/Champton81/HPPrinter.jpg

your only response to what i had to say is a small error in my typing haha, and im the troll... yeah i was probably a little harsh there with my input but i mean come on, this is a tech wesite. dont post "what ifs" about soemthing that was actaully REPORTED on this site... jeeez. not to mention the fact u could have very quickly looked that up. perhaps i need to grow up alil, i wont deny that, but come on man learn how to actually use the internet and not make yourself look like a complete airhead

ok... I'll be the air head... Im done...

"Dance music, hand percussion, mobile tech (obviously), chasin skirts, workin out, warcraft 3, parties, elctronic/ electronic rock shows, whippin my civic si, and reading this site's content"

haha u can use the internet!!! i have degree in biology and work in a lab, i wouldnt nec consider myself an airhead. plus, whats worng with actaully putting something interesting in my profile? its not like i actaully sat there and thought that through. that was a quit run off of things. have u ever driven a civic si while blaring some electro? now thats a good time

And I am a Electrical Engineer good for you... your life isnt a total waste...

People need to stop E-thugin on here.

Perhaps you do have a degree, but you write like a tween.

"Biomedical Engineer"

I win

"No college degree self made millionaire"

Would that win??? Prob not but it sounded funny at the time.

Well his point was that he was too 'busy' to keep up with the latest news. What I should have said was "RSS feeds"...

NERDFIGHT!!!

LOL

Twit cage match.

you would def win if that was the case... what i would give to not have to pay student loans (probably a finger or 2). i envy you

I'd just like to say that this is my only line...

Man, I could not stop laughing every time that "WebOS printers/ toasters" devices came up. That boot time makes WebOS a perfect fit for this kind of devices, hell yeah! Unless we are talking about corporate, always-on printers (and always-on toasters???), then boy, they are soo wrong!

The new Macbook Air boots up in about 15 seconds and is practically instant on when it's asleep so OSX must also be a good fit.

Speaking of Macbook Air... check this out :D

if they were smart they would keep the Palm name for portable devices. Just like how over at Big Red they have a selection of devices specifically with the "Droid" name on it... The model seems to work.

yeah anything they make that actually fits in your PALM should def keep the name, it only makes sense... not to mention the fact that HP phones didnt sell very well at all. Palm doesnt really have a bad name, y fix something that aint broken right?

I really don't care about the name anymore. I just want a phone with good hardware that doesn't fall apart every 4 months.

An HP branded phone will definitely move more units.

My 16 month old Pre that has never been replaced doesn't understand what you are saying :)

For new owners remember - self help sites tend to be biased towards people who have problems as that's one of the reasons people seek them out.

This isn't to say there aren't problems with the Pre, but people rarely complain loudly about units that work, just the instances that don't. So you may get a overly bad impression of the failure rate of the Pre (or any other device).

Having been here for a while I can attest to the fact that a single Pre with an Oreo issue can cause the owner to write hundreds of messages over several months mentioning the Oreo issue.

Normally in response to any thread that mentions Palm, or new hardware, or new software or, well, pretty much anything.

The Oreo issue? Ha the Oreo issue is the last of my concerns. Lets start with the USB cable. I already gone through two of those because the rubber on the cable tends to break easily. My 4 year old iPod cable has yet to show signs of wear.

You wont get anywhere by defending the hardware quality of the pre. By now, it is common knowledge that the hardware blows.

"the rubber on the cable tends to break easy". This is first time I read about this type of problem.
I have pre plus on verizon. I drop my phone so many times, on concrete, asphalt .... I lost count. My phone don't even have any covers except for screen cover. No oreo, no cracks at usb, no dead screen. Maybe I'm just lucky one. My only complain is Verizon cripling GPS and radio board receiver getting burning hot while streaming music to point where I have to remove back cover to cool it quicker.(124F) My brothers sprint pre since launch day still works great despite of many external dings due to drops....
What did you do to get oreo effect?

I'm the kind of guy that doesn't drop or break things. My Pre USB port developed the crack and it started to crawl across the screen. My USB Cable broke also. The rubber cracked and the wires eventually frayed.

Sad to see the Palm name fading away. :(

Also....Enough with the toaster joke.

-1

I want a webOS printer and toaster in one. I want it to toast my bread in patterns to match photos. Then I can sell Jesus Bagels on ebay to gullible suckers.

HAHA. Obviously you put some thought into the toaster concept.

For me, the Palm name was burried with Garnet. The EP-Palm was a beyond-apple effort and didn't embody ANY of the values of the previous Palm. Not to say WebOS isn't an aboslute treasure and HP can likely leverage it into becoming a great asset for serious wireless folk.

let me ask you guys this if they were to drop the name palm all together and from now on everything say hp would u guys stick around (i would i have a envy and i like hp, plus webos hasnt been matched)

I'd stick around of course because of webOS. But I would miss the Palm name.

Doesn't matter much to me. Brand loyalty is one of the most absurd concepts the public has been sold on. Either a product fits your needs or it doesn't, brand name shouldn't enter into the process in any way.

I agree 100 percent. furthermore, I would like for the Palm name to go away completely, it has not been doing well in the last few years.

I hope the Palm site shows"...coming soon to Sprint" also.

yeah I like the palm name besides...whats our releasemypre guy gonna yell...."HPeeeeeeeeeeeee!" hopefully we won't NEED him...but just in case we do........"PAAAAAAAALM!!!!!....just fits!..

I don't mind the name change just release 10 spectacular phones already.

In some ways its a good thing that HP is converting over in that they will take responsibility of the brand in the marketplace.

I was thinking, Palm CREATED WebOS. HP needs to give credit where credit is due and at least leave the palm name somewhere on WebOS devices. Yeah, they bought it, but they didn't create it. I think it would be kinda messed up to kill the palm name and label everything HP like WebOS is all their doing. At least leave Palm somewhere on the boot up screen. Kinda like what Palm did with Access on the old PalmOS.

nice sentiment, but they own it now and can do what they want and call it what they want. I hope they see value in the Palm brand.

Do you still display the sign with name of your builder in front of your house? I know you own it but you didn't build it.

Well they did give palm large bags of money.

If you want to show your appreciation of the work I'm done then I'm pretty cool with cash :)

I rather the phones be branded with HP, Palm brand carriers some baggage now.

+100

The beginning of the end of mankind.....

LOL, the "new HP sign" is just a sticker on top of the Palm sign. It's all cracked and wrinkled.

yeah it sux. i mean im not going to argue with a fortune 500 comapany's PR and marketing strat, but come on now. they are probably trying to make the palm logo less distinctive from the hp logo. personally i liked what they had b4. not too many comapanies had an orange logo (mayb there is a reason behind that haha)

HAHA. Thats funny. Hopefully this is due to all their money being tied up in new products and REPLACING the sign was not on the top of their priority list.

Lol, you know someone just got fired because of that, right?

No one got fired. This is HP, not Apple. haha

well atleast a stern talking to... lol

"Palm, Pixi, Pre, and webOS are trademarks of Palm, Inc., a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard Company" --- So says the legal jargon at the bottom of palm.com. The logo may change, but Palm remains.

It's definitively over now. :-(

R.I.P. Palm

it is slightly disheartening to see the brand go, but at this point all i care about concerning Palm is that the deliver me my duel-core, webOS running, gaming oriented phone. whether its says HP, Palm, HPalm on it is not too important to me. no matter what it is banded with it's still made by the same people anyhow right?

Palm, if this next phone doesn't stash my weed and roll me a joint at the touch of a button I'm moving to android. C'mon guys quit bitching about the same things. It will happen when it happens. Have fun with your dildo sized evo.

aaaahhhhhhahahaha Palm is indeed dank my friend

So what will happen to Precentral's colors? It was surely based off Palm's orange color. Will we see a change? It won't hurt my feelings to get rid of that damn puke green color. :)

Why is the HP logo on the palm site gone now?

Its been a slow couple days here at P|C

I really don't think that they should have done that, when Tata bought Jaguar, they didn't call the XJ the Tata XJ, and there aren't any Tata logos at Jag's headquarters either. So, Palm still should be Palm, and not HP.

i couldnt agree more with jsgraphicart. this is making me yawn.

This guy leaves the same comment on every thread. How has he not been kicked?

When u reboot your phone, will the "Palm" that appears also change?!?!?

The word "palm" integrates well considering the nature of products... trending into your palm. It's a rare case of win/win. HP wins by simply incorporating the word into a product name, not by branding. For the time being, while corporate cultures remain distinct, Palm asserts itself as a vital component. Over time the distinction fades, along with the Palm brand.
