HP's channel partners getting ready for PalmPad 53
CRN brings a report that HP's channel partners, who help sell and integrate HP technology in industries such as healthcare, are both anticipating and working with webOS tablets, which have been announced for "early 2011."
In the article, John Convery of Denali Advanced Integration reported having already been working with prototype webOS tablets along with "Slates" (likely the Windows 7-based tablets, notwithstanding CRN's slight misuse of the term to include the webOS tablets too). Convery explains HP's advantage over competitors in the tablet space:
"HP has the resources and the R&D clout to do anything," Convery said. "It's all part of their converged infrastructure. They've got the powerful tech teams and powerful marketing and products and services across their entire portfolio."
We appreciate hearing that HP is not only talking about future webOS products, but priming its powerful channel partners to understand and share the value they represent.

If this somehow beats the next phone out...
Yes, phone first.
I'd actually be happy to buy a PalmPad before a new phone...
Sadly I can't pre-order.
when I see the first one out then I'll think about it
I think HP will have alot better pull and more of a shot at pushing the tablet, ie the PalmPad, to the consumer, MAINLY because HP already has strong ties with all the stores that will be selling the PalmPad (best buy, frys, anywhere else that sells computers etc etc.) Therefore they will use their pull with those companies to make sure they push the PalmPad over the ipad, and the countless other adroid tabs.
It will be harder for them to get the Carriers to back and push webos, because they are all droid happy right now and HP has not had any major ties with those big companies lately to convince them to push the phone hard..
I really hope they can produce multiple form factos and release on all carriers at the same time, but the carriers definitly wouldnt back it or push it that much, if that was the case... They will need a STRONG ad campaign to created high demand to force the carriers to give webos the attention it deserves..
Like I said in the other thread:
While I want a new phone as much as anyone, I wonder if it's the best thing for HP to release a phone s their first WebOS device.
With all the buzz about tablets these days, I wonder if it would be better to get a tablet out. Make it wireless capable and get it out to all the carriers & retail outlets. People are looking @ tablets right now. If they could see a WebOS tablet sitting beside an iPad, Tab, etc, I think people would be more likely to play with and enjoy that easier than trying to unearth a phone buried in the corner with salespeople trying to usher you to their big display in the middle of the store with something, bigger, "better", faster.
I think it might be easier to get NEW customers in the tablet, rather than phone, market.
I agree
I agree - a tablet release would certainly garner webOS greater attention. You could then ride off the back of the tablets success and release two or three webOS phones.
My hunch is that they'll unveil both at CES (hopefully with plenty of deets leaked to build anticipation and software, both biz and consumer, develop in the meantime too. And actual availability of both in Feb/March.
That's like saying that Honda motorcycle dealers should sell cars, too, since people going in to look a the motorcycle will say "Hmm, they have cars too? I DO need a car, also."
it's absolutely nothing like that. horrible analogy. HP is a computer manufacturer. it's PHONES that's new for them. don't forget it's HP who's steering this ship, not Palm...
When is the last time you bought a phone based on your experience with a computer?
Consumers adopt the smaller devices because they are inexpensive and friendly - iPods. Then, they buy the slightly bigger, more expensive one - iPod Touch/iPhones. Then, they consider buying something even bigger - iPads.
They don't do it the other way around. That's what Microsoft is learning. Their attempts to sell tablets, phones, and media players to PC users hasn't really worked.
Actually, I think you might be right. After all the troubles the Palm Pre had on Sprint. I know a few people who will never try a webOS phone, but I don't know who wouldn't try a PalmPad. Then, if they release the phone afterward more people will give it a chance. If not buy the phone specifically because they love WebOS. Hopefully, that's HP's reasoning... even though I am dying for a new phone, I don't want to worry about the company going out of business like before HP bought Palm.
I really want a palm pad. And I will buy one. But like the I pad i dont know where it fits in my life?
Exactly...
I had no use for a PDA until I got one - now I can't live without a Smartphone.
How true, I even resisted the Smartphone at first. I liked my little flip phone and my Palm Tungesten for PDA. Once I got my first Treo 650, I wondered why I waited so long!
yawn.
How is calling a webOS tablet "Slate" a missuse of the term?
There is no possible way HP will make the mistake of calling the tablet PalmPad. It to closely resembles iPad.
Calling all their tablets, "Slate" makes for easy and unified marketing. When you say "Slate" people will know you are talking about HP. If you say "PalmPad", most people will think you are talking about the iPad.
I agree they need to call it a slate. Slate is already well known and it's not even out yet. I'm talking the new windows 7 that was leaked. Hp slate good. Anything with palm on it bad. I tell people I have a palm they either have no idea what it is or have a bad view on it.
big yawnnnnn.... I want a phone.. I don't see what's so special about a pad like device. Once my laptop die, I'm buying a new laptop. I love keyboards & mouses. imo
mouses? Does it not being an animal make the plural any different? Can someone who knows english please expand?
According to Mr. Jinks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixie_and_Dixie_and_Mr._Jinks), it's actually "meeces," as in, "I hate those meeces to pieces!" :) {Jonathan}
Mice? Or Mouses?
Really, the answer is either. Both forms are used among professionals and the general public, and both forms are listed in the Oxford English Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, so use whichever one you prefer.

Better start luring more app developers before you release a tablet. What could I do on this thing that I can't do on my phone now? Get productivity apps (Doc View is absolute garbage), partner up with an ebook distributor, and get devs to port their awesome iOS apps over. I hate the iPad and Apple, but after being in the airport several times lately and seeing so many of them... I do want a cool tablet. But I want one that can actually do things. Right now, my PalmPad Mini can't do crap that is worth the tablet investment.
Oh, and get Adobe on Flash for WebOS. That would knock the iPad out of the park.
A pad with phone capabilities would easily be interesting and expand WebOS as a comprehensive unified system.
is the palm pad going to some how have flash on it? I'm wondering cause I see tablets as the ultimate couch buddy, being able to watch videos and browse the web fully without obstruction. Flash might suck but it is all over the place and a tablet without it just seems worthless. ipad gets away with it just because it's an ipad. Oh and it's got to be ready right away to play the awesome games cause rather you like it or not games are big when people are deciding these things. Parent goes out and sees the great games and thinks that's cool my kids can enjoy it on a trip as well.
You know, I see an iPad or PalmPad as a tool for viewing all those episodes of House that I miss.
What I never seem to get from Comcast, I could easily find on the net.
...of course, I could always upgrade to a DVR and that would fix 90% of that issue....
Still having hard time finding a use for a tablet. I don't buy things with a 'just buy it cause it's cool, and wait to see what you'll use it for' approach.
Give me easy to access document editing, an updated amazing to use touch based doc editor (there's got to be one in the works from DataViz or Microsoft or QuickOffice) and then i'll be all over a tablet.
Right now I see no need for it if I can't manipulate documents easily, and on the fly.
I am interested in what QuickOffice has in store. Is there a web demo on Youtube?
....time to check that out.
I am somewhat embarrassed to admit, but nearly all my iPad time is watching TV. i don't watch a lot in the house on a schedule - don't DVR - but I love love love curling up anywhere in the house or the porch or somewhere else, watching all the TV I don't get to see.
Add the other benefits (instant on, instant internet) and I am a pop-culture junkie now.
I agree about couch potato suitability. I would mostly use it on couch and w BT keyboard to take notes at lectures, and use phone at work. W a pPad, could hopefully leave laptop at home for short business trips.
I just want Webos 2.0 before we see this!
+1 throw us users a bone.
I was really on the fence with a pad/tablet of any kind. But....I won and iPad in a raffle. Before I say anything else, I need to clarify I'm a solid WebOS fan and highly anticipating(hoping) for a new WebOS phone(with physical keyboard :)
After that being said, I spent an evening with the iPad last night, and I must say how much I enjoyed it and with every application I used I KNEW using a tablet with WebOS would be so much better. I kept trying to swipe things and I was frustrated with applications that cost $4-$7 that are already built into WebOS software on the Palm Pre that I would hope would be in a WebOS tablet, specifically 2 separate Google Calendar apps that cost $6.99 when it just 'works' in WebOS. I could easily see a tablet replacing 80% of my PC/laptop needs at home, i just want a WebOS tablet now...as in right now.
glad they are pushing webos into the business markets. be it a pad or phone, it's important to get professional apps on webos and not only pdk-games.

Hi all,
From the start I have maintained that if needed, HP would pay for apps to be created. They are making sure that there will be a great deal of native aka built in apps. This in turn will help more apps to be created or ported.
Take care, Jay
I think they should come out at the same time. Right before the holidays. That way you could take your new WebOS 2.0 phone and turn on mobile hot spot and "tether" your PalmPad to it. Then there you will be able to have two flavors of the PalmPad, one without mobile broadband and one with.
Also, they should let you install any app that you have purchased on your WebOS Phone and install it on your PalmPad and vice versa. Non of this buying the same app twice crap.
The reason the IPad is doing as good as it is, is because of the apps. The apps were well established with the IPhone and IPod that the IPad had a lot of appeal. That is why they should also come out with a carrierless device like the IPod Touch. Push more devices that carry apps to drive the need and development for the apps.
Palm Faithful are we all, but frustrated by the delay in arrival of Flash of any version for the Pre and/or Pixi.
I am looking forward to a Palm "slate' that has Flash, and Bluetooth for ear phones or speakers,
and can can have USB and other device connectivity, such as wireless mice, and aux keyboard or
'virtual' lazer key pad projected in front of 'slate' that is standing up, like the Sprint EVO smartphone.
Neat stuff as options, eh?
oK if Webos is key.. Then a palmpad running webos2.. W/all my apps, then add a good bluetooth headset & mic.. Plg in magic jack for calling & port current mobile # to magicjack, implement youmail app, & MyFax app & you have mobile desk/office that fits into a TUMI Messenger bag ( small size) & you don't even have to open the bag to make/receive a call...just tap bluetooth headset & go.... All your apps just a screen touch away!
Then stop & search a HPrinter running webos2 & Print yor incoming fax or any hard copy you need. I live & work in Manhattan NY & this is how I do business today w/a netbook, & a PRE which I can now replace with above config... :)
please make sure it has a skype app from day one. Hp, I'm looking at you!
I'm pretty sure I could replace my laptop with a tablet for most of what I do; i.e. browsing the Interwebs, photo-manipulation, etc. For those times I need to do a lot of concentrated input (writing blog posts or long emails for instance) a BT keyboard/mouse would serve just fine (presuming that a table will have BT support).
So I'd personally be very interested in a WebOS tablet/slate to replace my current HP laptop (which is growing a bit long in the tooth in any event). However, I would need a productivity suite, multi-card/tabbed browser, webcam for video conferencing, and a decent image manipulation app a la the GIMP or Photoshop. HDMI out, USB & FireWire ports and a flash card reader would be nice. I'd like to see HP/Palm steal a march on Apple with a minimum 1280 x 800 resolution on a 7-10 inch (18-25mm) screen (AMOLED or LED backlit).
Please use the touchstone charging system for any new products. I have 4 of them and don't want to give this great technology up.
You may have a hard time keeping the PalmPan on a touchstone with it's current design.
i rather see them polishing up webos, add more and more features, get rid of the lag completely. Bring on WebOS 2.0
I want a Palmpad as soon as possible.
The biggest problem 4 me is that I live in Germany and all the Palm phones came to whole Europe 6 months later after the first release in the US.
The prices are also much higher than in the US.
So the longer all you Palm-Fans in the US have to wait for new phones or tablet, all the people in Europe have to wait the new release plus 6 months later.
Worst case scenario: Tablet or phone comes in March and I can buy it in autumn. :-(
barcelona is closer to germany!

more devices the merrier
they should make the webOS tablet with a good sized gesture area. When a user puts 8 fingers down on the gesture area, a backlit orange themed keyboard with same layout as the Pre appears in the gesture area for a user defined amount of time. The keys, when pressed, become more pronounced.
this would eliminate a virtual keyboard taking up screen space.
also, create touchstone periphials for the tablet such as a touchstone/projector (which would plug into a port on the top of the tablet or bluetooth) and the tablet would rest on at an angle.
the tablet may be exactly what HPalm needs to get WebOS out there, while slates are hot.
"oh hey, did you see the new HP/Palm phone that's out? dude its like a mini palmpad!"
does that sound familiar?
btw love it

Can we please get a new image for the PalmPad (or whatever the heck the marketing dept. decides to call it)?
If the UI looks like the above picture that is always here on P|C I fear it is going to be a terrible device. Sure that makes it look like a carry over from the Pre, but what would happen if you tap on one of those cards? Ugly, pure ugly...
