HP's Chief Strategist and Technology officer talks Palm, webOS, and strategy 33
Another big tech conference, another high-ranking Hewlett-Packard executive (they've got a lot of 'em) talking about the company's plans to bring webOS across a variety of devices. This time around it's Shane Robison, HP's Chief Strategy and Technology officer, an exec who sits fairly well up in the corporate chain as the man to whom all of the senior CTOs, including Phil McKinney and Rahul Sood, report. CNET caught his presentation at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe this year, and Palm and webOS inevitably came up.
Robison reiterated what his colleagues have been saying about the Palm purchase since it was first announced, that it gives them a "modern, web-oriented, connected operating system", that it'll be deployed across a wide variety of devices such as printers and netbooks with a consistent interface across the family of devices and that the technology will be pivotal in company's strategy going forward.
While Robison did specifically mention netbooks, he also helped to put the role of webOS in their product ecosystem into context - that it'll live side-by-side with Windows based products that are aimed for people who are looking to do productivity tasks: "We're not trying to wreck the market we've already got."
Robison sees the growing global middle class as a greater opportunity to sell these increasingly web-connected products. Computing is shifting from a focus on productivity to communications, he said. And we thought, huh, that sounds like something that webOS is particularly well suited for.

**Yawn**
Just give me new hw for my smartphone. Keep your WebOS printers, faxes, refrigerators. :)
where is my PRE- replacement...... Pleazzzzzzzze
Give a shit.
This is so exciting! It's like last year when Apple set all of its senior executives to tech conferences to talk about how they were going to port iOS into new tablet devices and TV-connected devices and did a live demo of an ultra-high pixel density screen.
Wait...never mind...they didn't do that. In fact, nobody knew there was actually going to be a Apple tablet and what OS it was going to run until earlier this year.
The question is - why is HP doing this? Are they wanting to make sure that nobody forgets about Palm during a long lull period?
This is what HP does. Frustrating, eh?
If HP really is focused on releasing a vast and wide array of products that are built around WebOS, then why would they be releasing a tablet thats built to tun off Android 2.1? If their wanting total interoperability between different products, they cannot have Android and WebOS products side-by-side.
Only one can be used in the end... my .02 cents.
I think they might have a couple more dead-end Android devices coming. Things that were too far in development to kill. Maybe even an Android iPAQ smartphone. They just want to make sure that everyone in tech realizes that their future lies with webOS. Their present will be sold-off at Costco and Sam's to unsuspecting end-users who don't care about the OS.
Dual post

Yeah, thats Android!
I'm more interested in the update, why they are not talking about that, and future Pre devices before anything else.
TENTH!....I AM TENTH!
New strategy for HP should be:
"Less with the talk, More with the do.."
Gawd, all HP does is TALK.
Shut your big fat yapper HP! Your faithful webOS customers are rapidly losing patience with talking. More action!
Show some concept renders, sneak peak at webOS 2.0. Something besides talking.
PLEASE!!! The TRUE Palm faithful are patient enough and wise enough to realize that HP couldn't do ANYTHING until they ACTUALLY OWNED PALM!!! We ALSO know that it takes TIME to redesign any PREVIOUS PROJECTS to work with their new purchase, WebOS!
I'm so tired of all this GIMME GIMME GIMME talk! Shut it already and just take a freakin pill until it comes out!!! They already told us it'd be the FALL that we get 2.0, they've told us that this next year is going to be exciting...
Leave it alone, or join Kinster on his annoyingly-situated OS of Android and go dump on a lawn.
...and yes, I use Android, Kinster, so I KNOW it's annoying and nowhere NEAR as usable as WebOS! So shut YOUR yap and go back to trolling ANDROID Central instead of spewing vomitous opinions here...but love ya!
They did, they realized that Android truly is the future and webos is for niche markets like Nokia is in the US.
niche market...? um, ya... do you USE Android??? Anyone that I show my Android & Pre to all come out loving my Pre more. When I show my Pre TO an Android user, all they can say is "well, but I have more apps" -THAT YOU RUN OUT OF SPACE INSTALLING FOR!!!!
anyway, stuff this in your niche & fly a kite!! haha
beat it kinster. You bother me.
go task manage your droid, then yourself trollster.
He cant leave. He's here for validation. Must own a droid.
He said my mother stood him up for a date. I guess even the dead have standards. Somebody validate Kinster please, he's posting more often than Derek!
This is nice and I am 1st for the second time today...wow! Cant wait to see all these presentation talks moved into action.
Rather than just providing an org chart, Maybe HP plans to intro their staff to us 1 at a time, then JR will come back later with the big products announcement, can a man dream....
Dang, here we are, another executive with another speech about "devices such as printers and netbooks". So are they just afraid to say smartphone, or are they being careful cause they know the Pre is the end of the road for them from Palm?
I have to agree with mikey47: I do find it worrisome that HP is so eager to mention netbooks and printers (I'm sorry, I have a hard time getting excited about webOS on a printer...), but seems to steer away from mentioning smartphones.
HP talks about technology, not products. And all they've said is "printers", just like "smartphones". No details about any of them, just defining the space they're looking to occupy. People are in such a hurry to get the Pre2/WebOS2 before they're ready. Shame we didn't learn more from Palm's haste.
i don't believe hp would ever come with a new phone ,is so sad,i already move on i got the htc evo
GOOD BOY! YOU FELL FOR THE SHINY NEW ANDROID DEVICE.. THAT WILL WATCH YOU... TRACK YOU.. AND SELL YOU WITHOUT YOU EVEN KNOWINGIT.
GOOGLE'S MASTER PLAN.... TO KNOW YOUR EVERY MOVE. AS YOU ARE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH... YOUR DROID WILL BE WATCHING YOU. THEY WILL SELL THAT INFO TO TOOTHPASTE MANUFACTURES.. SHOOTING THEIR STOCK FROM $450 TO $700 !!!!
YOU ARE ..... BEING WATCHED ;-)
Lol a lil sensational, but I, just recently, have been starting to become afraid of Google's power. Anybody can say "Don't be evil." Can you really believe that slogan from a company that is based on Marketing? That phrase is marketing.
Android with good hardware is a reasonable package despite the clunky UI. WebOS on new hardware with a few key apps added, should be the bomb.
But in the end, do you want your smartphone run by a world leading technology company, or a world leading advertising company. Does one own the droid, or does the droid own the user?
Working for htc now? Getting paid for trolling?
patience guyzzzz! there will be webos 2.0! just wait and see...
Yeah but, where does it say that webOS 2.0 will ever run on a smartphone like the Pre? It could just be targeted for printers, netbooks, and ... toasters.
i am waiting for something, but it has been so long now, i forget what it was...
