HP's Jon Rubinstein and Todd Bradley to talk tomorrow at Brainstorm Tech 49

by Robert Werlinger Wed, 21 Jul 2010 5:37 pm EDT

After being off the press radar since before the acquisition by HP, former CEO turned GM of Palm Jon Rubinstein is set to appear for the first time in a talk with HP's Todd Bradly.   The session begins tomorrow at 3PM at Brainstorm Tech (where in-person registration will set you back a cool $3500) where the topic will undoubtedly be Palm and webOS, and HP has invited you to join in on the web feed for free by using coupon code BTVTWT at the event's website.

Will we see a product announcement or any insight into the company's roadmap?  If recent presentations at other tech conferences are any indication, probably not, but it'll be great to see one of the catalysts behind webOS's presence in the market place back in action.

Dare I say it? First?

Slow day at work. Won't get my hopes up for announcements, but it'll be interesting to see what Mr. Rubinstein has to say after the merger. Go HPalm!

So you guys will be there in person to report on the action, right? Right...?

Can I assume this is 3:00pm PST?

3 p.m. Mountain Time correct?

Yep Mtn time as the event is being held in Aspen, Colorado. Full agenda here:

I'm getting sick of all these conferences and events that talk about the future of technology. We already know this. How about we see some result?

better be new hardware because I'm tired of using year old hardware

I agree. Either that or talk about licensing to other companies. Look at Android. New more powerful phones coming every MONTH. Can you imagine if you have HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony are trying to outdo each other? The Pre is at the original Droid level. The market has gone way past that now. (Droid -> Droid X, Galaxy, Evo, Incredible, Droid 2 coming soon)

Apple can get by building their "own" hardware as can RIM because they have a lot of market share. Palm is essentially dead in terms of market share now and they have WinPho7 to compete with soon (which appears to be way smoother and responsive than webOS).

HPalm needs to either license it out (and have it attractive to license out) or refresh their hardware at least every year, but probably more like every 9 months. Right now they're going on over a year w/ no announcement for anything new.

this might be it guys, you never kno

There will be no early announcement.

When the new hardware is ready to ship, we'll hear about it. This won't happen until at least September.

The device will launch webOS 2.0.

+1

Why launch your new flagship device on older software? I think the fall update will come out followed by new hardware.

this might be it guys, you never kno

This might be it guys... This may be more false hope we're hoping not to get (but deep down inside we know we are).

Y'know, I might be sympathetic to the 'new hardware' crowd if not for the fact that I bet a huge chunk of them will again be asking for new hardware 3 months after the next new device comes out. And that's assuming they aren't complaining even sooner because of the virtual or physical keyboard, form factor, screen size (too big/small) or whatever else.

There is no reason to think new hardware will be announced tomorrowl this sounds more like a chance for Palm and HP to talk to the tech public about how Palm/WebOS will be integrated into HP, most such discussions in the past have not included the Palm side.
Nor is OSCON the forum for a hardware announcement. Hardware is not an opensource issue.
The announcement will come at a major tech event or it will come very much out of the blue. Not at a small, topically unrelated event.

they will hold a confrence and walk out with a manilla envelope. True story.

I hear that the Palm Pre will ship in late April 2009.

Let me guess what they'll say.

"Stay tuned, we have a roadmap."

$3,500 for registration? There will be no announcements here, people. Move along, move along.

@hpnews tweeted a discount code to get in for free. Worked for me. Here's the link if interested: http://twitter.com/hpnews/status/19104746830

@brendilon "Nor is OSCON the forum for a hardware announcement. Hardware is not an opensource issue." Correct. This is at Brainstorm Tech. OSCON is in Oregon, BS Tech is in Colorado.

"The announcement will come at a major tech event or it will come very much out of the blue. Not at a small, topically unrelated event." I imagine that HP giving away passes to palm followers to view for free, and having Ruby there, would be a perfect time to announce SOMETHING. Certainly would be out of the blue, which you concur is possible.

My two pennies.

@ttremblay
that's too funny. Got a little beer out my nose.

They might annouce that pigs are flying too...

Frankly, i've given up. My upgrade is August, and if nothing is announced for Sprint I'm off to give Android a whirl for a year and then see what is available in August 2011.

They feel no loyalty to any of the Sprint Pre users to give them an option after a year, why should we feel loyalty to sit on our thumbs and wait?

That's just my personal opinion, not an ultimatum or threat, just a sad time. I hope for those of you that wait longer than I that your wait is fruitful.

I hope your impatience pays off.
There is no way in hell i would buy another phone with a webOS lurking.... with an anouncement possible any day......
good luck, sincerly.

Buyers remorse is the worst

Yeah, it would definitely be buyer's remorse if something were released on Sprint after moving to another platform, but I guess that is the games we play.

Luckily, for me, I was not in the group who came in on launch day, so I get a couple of months reprieve while I wait for my renewal date.

If they would just announce that they will release a device on Sprint that would be enough for me. Waiting until fall/winter only to hear that they are releasing on VZW and AT&T would really, really stink!!

Unfortunately for us Sprint folks, Sprint is the "small market", I think HPalm will go after the masses on VZW and AT&T. I sure hope I am wrong and we have not seen the end of webOS on Sprint.

I signed up...it will be right when I get off of work. I am so excited...I just want to see what MIGHT happen. Show us something!!!

Since Ruby will be there, lets hope there is a hardware announcement! Take care, Jay

I hope there's something, come on, Ruby IS in this conference, when he is, there's always a surprise.

I doubt they'll announce something. If they where going to announce something, they'd give people a good heads-up. Not let them know via twitter the day before the event. They're going to get next to no coverage..

But this is one of those rare times i'm hopping i'll eat my words...

The pass is not to attend the event, it is to listen to it live on the web.

They know we are clamoring for news. They wouldn't set up the webcast and invite us, if all we were going to hear is "Stay Tuned." They know that would just infuriate people. I hope they aren't that out of touch. They are going to drop a bone.

In a way your right, but it`s going to be a small bone, because of, well, what i said above..

which 3pm? eastern? pacific?

3pm Mountain

The link changed. Here is the most recent Twitter from @HPNews:

Correct link -> LIVE tmrw: @Palm GM J Rubinstein and HP's Todd Bradley talk to @adamlashinsky at 3pm MT http://bit.ly/asGNlc $HPQ

I'd be surprised at any hardware announcements unless it was for a device that wouldn't be coming out for several months. The acquisition was completed just 3 weeks ago; that's not much time for HP to review & give their seal of approval to any hardware that Palm may have had waiting in the wings. And it's way, way too soon for the combined entity to have come up with anything entirely new beyond draft stage.

HPalm may have grand plans for webOS, tablet computing, embedded devices (printers), and maybe even smartphones, but they aren't going to have hardware ready in the next 6 to 8 weeks. It's just too soon.

I'd love to be proven wrong. I still have my Sprint launch-day Pre and would love to upgrade but I just can't believe they'll have hardware ready in the next 3 months.

My $.02:

No hardware announcements, BUT, quite likely talking about new features for WebOS they are working on.

:)

They at least ask the question.

Also when is the last time you've heard of HP announcing a product before hand? They don't tend to do it, the just release stuff. Except for the win7 tablet, but we'll see how that turns out.

$3500 a pop! Palm should give up something. I love Palm, but I'm pissed with them. They should stop inviting them to these events, if they are just going to talk more of the same. The new phone BETTER be worth all this waiting! :-(

is live video able to be streamed on the pre??

is live video able to be streamed on the pre??

is live video able to be streamed on the pre??

is live video able to be streamed on the pre??

So, I registered for the live stream and I don't see anything with any browser once I logged in and all that crap. I'm guessing everyone is having that same issue? If it wasn't free with that coupon code, I'd be pissed right now; unless of course it didn't start yet.

I tried the link above, and no dice. anyone have a working link?

My fault. I mixed up Mountain and Central times. *face palm*
