McKinney Touchstone

We've already reported how HP is installing Touchstones everywhere, including in its board rooms. Via Twitter yesterday, we learned that Phil McKinney, VP and CTO of HP's Personal Systems Group, has joined the many Pre and Pixi users who are mounting their Touchstones in their cars to make the best mobile OS even more mobile. Perhaps McKinney might want to post the photo of his install, and get some tips on even more sophisticated and creative mounts in our forum. Join up, Phil, it's free!

We also hear that HP's Rahul Sood is joining the Touchstone-in-car bandwagon. Now all we need is an official solution - what say you, HP?

Oh and look, he's an early adopter with the original Pre!
I just need to fasten mine down a little more sturdy. My touchstone goes flying on some sharp curves in my sports car. :)

I have mine installed in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it is great. Everyone that sees it loves it

idk why but it looks fake to me...

looks like he just put it there for a photo shoot ;P

PS.
Clean your car man! lol

He tweeted about installing it. Said it would be easy, because of the AC plug his vehicle has.

So how do you plug a 110 volt touchstone into a 12 volt car system?

you beat me to that comment. i was wondering the same thing. i know they make inverters. i have used one in the past with a laptop i had. but his looks built in from the mfg.

Yep. That was what his comment on Twitter would lead me to believe.

No idea. But it works for me, even without the builtin inverter: http://3.ly/CAcr

The input to the Touchstone puck is a USB cable. If you use the official Palm USB car charger, you can plug it directly into the Touchstone puck -- no inverter necessary. I have Touchstones set up this way in both of my cars and it works great!

works like a champ in my car with the Palm car kit directly into a touchstone. I seem to recall some people having issues with getting enough juice into the touchstone to charge.

The only thing I have noticed is that sometimes my phone does the charging notification "dink-dink" when I release the brakes. So I am guessing that the voltage drops temporarily when I hit the brakes, which probably is my car, but it works fine otherwise.

I have an adapter that allows me to plug in my charger (or any other device that plugs into a normal outlet) into the lighter outlet. It works great. Problem is, I dont have anywhere to really put the charger. lol. If only they made a mount for it.

What's next? Pictures of your favorite HP exec's master bathroom with a toilet-mounted touchstone?

if anyone mounted a touchstone in the head, I'd like to see some proof.

in the meantime, here's an old joke about fancy bathrooms.

when george bush was president-elect, he got to go visit the white house. Bill clinton took him on a grand tour, the complete building, even the bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. George was so happy that he went home and immediately told his wife laura that she had to go back and see it all.

the next week laura showed up and was greeted by hillary and was taken on the same grand tour. She got to the end and laura asked "when do we see the presidential bathroom?" and hillary said "we've been to all of the bathrooms in the white house." laura said "what about the one with the golden urinal?"

hillary thought about that for a moment, then yelled "bill, I know who peed in the saxophone."

Why is this news? i have had one installed since last year?

Yea... But your not setting the future of Palm!.... We on this blog are bought in to Palm.. But individualy we make no difference..

If you don't have AC in your car, and even if you do, the most efficient way to do this is with a switching regulator. Something like this: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=945-105...

That is a switching replacement for the Linear LM7805. It will take 9-18V and convert it to 5V at 2A.

Wiring is pretty easy: http://www.recom-international.com/pdf/Innoline/R-78Bxx-1.5_L.pdf

Maybe this provides us some hope that Our touchstone chargers will still work with the next generation of HP Pre phones-you know how manufactures Love to change standards ie cable connectors so we have to buy all new accessories......

Chas Palm

Guess what he drives... (I found out what it is, there's a dead giveaway in the pic)

Before you all go ragging him on his dirty car. I don't think that is his car. The post says Phil may want to post his picture of his install. Reading comprehension folks! As for the outlet, I have an outlet in my car, a 2008 Dodge Nitro that you just plug into with no invertor needed.

+1

He must not like Verizon or AT&T to be using a Pre Minus and not a Pre Plus.

I remember when my pre still had that glossy new look to it.

C'mon guys - don't get quite so skeptical so fast.

the picture shows the Palm AC adapter plugged into a Ford Escape Hybrid center floor console 110 V AC plug, which is powered from the hybrid battery, which is charged by braking and extra energy while driving. I have the same thing, and get 35.4 mpg currently while driving the hillsof S. Wisconsin. So far all I have used my ac plug for is charging phones and my DSLR 8amera batteries, as the USB port in the truck charges my pre too slowly. (Ford's Microsoft Sync has a dashboard USB port, and Bluetooth interface, both of which work great with Pre)

Why is everyone bashing his car? Because he has some dust in it? Oooooo. And I think even though he is assumably on Sprint, Palm should upgrade his phone to a plus that works on Sprint just because. lol.

"We also hear that HP's Rahul Sood is joining the Touchstone-in-car bandwagon. Now all we need is an official solution - what say you, HP?"

I don't see why HPalm should be responsible for doing this? It's certainly reasonable to leave that up to 3rd party designers. Does Apple handle any of the car mounting solutions for their idevices?

looks like a reflection of an iPhone taking the pic.....

Looks to me like you're seeing the edge of the sunroof and the drivers side window.

My favorite part is that one of the people setting the future of Palm is using an original Pre.

The article doesn't say what phone it is. Could be a Pixi Plus for all we know. The picture is not his car, but one from the forums or something.

Here's the link of my Pre on Touchstone in my Ford Escape Hybrid: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdwbjarvis/4969427516/sizes/m/ (I'm not yet sure how to put the actual pic in successfully)

Interesting. Looks like Mr. McKinney drives a Ford Escape Hybrid. I know this personally because that's nearly exactly how my Touchstone's been in mine for almost a year now. Except now I use a slightly different setup for charging it.

And BTW, with SYNC all you have to do is pair it w/Bluetooth and you can control virtually everything through it. I like to use Radiotime when I travel to listen to my fave Atlanta radio station through my Escape's speakers.

Don't knock that setup he's got. It's great for this launch week Pre power user!

wow tomdryan ur good!! Sike

I just use my cig adapter to the cable to the touchstone. No need for inverters...

I installed my touchstone in my 2005 Dodge Magnum a few months ago here are some pics: http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh354/Awsome525/RandomePrePics386.jpg http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh354/Awsome525/RandomePrePics379.jpg . but I have been using it in my car ever since I got it.
