HP's Windows 7 Slate to be released in Fall, focus on Enterprise 14

by Dieter Bohn Thu, 22 Jul 2010 5:53 pm EDT

HP's Todd Bradley just confirmed it at Fortune's Brainstorm conference: they will be releasing the Windows 7 based Slate 'this fall.' Those wondering how a Windows 7 Slate will coexist with a webOS-based slate also have their answer: the Windows 7 Slate will be designed specifically for the Enterprise. Bradley:

Our focus is working with still our largest software partner Microsoft to create a tablet, a slate for the enterprise business. [...] We have worked very closely with some of our commercial partners to understand what that market's like. [It will be launched] this fall. We are working to find the right set of customers, it will be customer specific than more broadly deployed.

There you have it, the PalmPad and the Windows 7 Slate will both live in the marketplace, but it looks like HP is definitely planning to differentiate them and the webOS tablet will be designed for "consuming media" while the Slate is meant for business.

Im cool with this. It would be dumb to spend millions of dollars on R&D and not come out with the windows slate. Palm will have a slate too hopefully before the holiday season.

Also in the future when webos has grown HP can dumb windows all-together and just do Webos for corporate and consumer users.

First! Now to be flamed, lol. Hmm, this is insteresting. I wonder which one will sell better Windows Tablet, or WebOS tablet?

FAIL!!!!

Not first, lol.. Beat me the 10 seconds it took me to type that haha, well.. Uh.. 2nd? Yea.

2nd? NO.... LMAO

Well I really wish one of these idoits would have asked about the rollout of a new WebOS phone..... ARGHH!!!!! I submitted the question and it never got answered. Don't get me wrong I am happy to hear there is a hardware map.

I like consuming media. Yum Yum - more WebOS please.

I hope the stylus option rumor wasn't misinterpreted. I'd expect it will be an option on the Windows tablet since it is going Enterprise. I hope it shows up on the webOS tablet also.

not sure if I can get down with this idea 100 percent. What about the webos users that need to conduct their biz on the go. I don't want to have to use the windows 7 just so I can have a excel style program. I want it all on one tablet. I find it short sighted to make the user pick one or the other both will suffer from this if someone drops a dope all in one tablet. If this is what I get they better drop a over the top smart phone to cure my webos fix

Honestly, Once both of these tablets are released you only have to wait a couple of months (at most) and you will be dual booting in no time.

I don't see the point in having a WebOS tablet. Can the WebOS tablet do anything that the iPad can't?

A Win 7 tablet would be the only thing that could compete with the iPad. And it will only succeed if it works as smoothly, gets similar battery life, and can feel like it was designed to only use a touch interface. If all that is in place, then you add the ability to run ANY windows program and you will have a serious alternative to the iPad.

Maybe the solution would be to have a WebOS front end to a Win7 OS.

I tend to agree with you. The main reason I haven't picked up an iPad is because I want compatibility with some MS apps, especially OneNote. I like the iPad, but it is missing the "produce" option. The compatibility bit is why I have no interest in an Android tablet, either. WebOS compares quite well to iOS and Android in the phone/pda space. In the slate space, I can't imagine that it will. I might be surprised, but that's my take, for now.

I'm looking forward to the Win7 Slate. I just hope it's not $2k.

I lol'd at this
