HP to show up at Mobile World Congress; Us too 39

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 12 Jan 2011 3:24 pm EST

Sure, HP and Palm took a pass on CES 2011, but that was because they are having their own event on February 9th (and, by the way, we're not expecting them to be present at Sprint's Feb 7th event). You know what tradeshow comes right after February 9th? Mobile World Congress, and HP will be there. Akitayo in our forums points us to the page with the goods. For those of you who want to see if you can parse any information from their statement, here it is in full:

The HP Booth (Hall 7, 7C37) will demonstrate our passion and commitment to innovation and industry leadership in mobility, in areas including smartphones, devices, slates and netbooks. We’ll share new products, services and apps, and demonstrate the leading HP webOS operating system. We’ll focus on the work we’re doing with application developers to provide customers with the ultimate in personalized experience. The showcase will underscore HP’s investment to deliver differentiated, compelling user experience, for individual consumers to enterprise businesses – and crucially, accelerating profitable growth for our partners, and HP.

See how HP Palm smartphones and the HP webOS operating system work together to provide seamless mobility solutions. And discover how HP ePrint works with HP webOS to help individuals and enterprises stay mobile and productive.

We’ll be sharing more HP Booth news over the coming weeks – and positively encourage you to stop by check out the showcase, and chat to our team about HP’s vision for a truly connected mobile world!

Thin gruel for rumormongers, but we'll happily note that they refer to "HP Palm smartphones" in such a way that doesn't rule out that they might have new devices on-hand. We'll also note that Palm is also hosting a webOS Developer Conference at App Planet at MWC.

In any case, we'll be there, so stay tuned.

"HP Palm smartphones." Nice, so it looks like the Palm name will stay.

Don't read too much into one press release.

Man, I really hoped that name was fast fading away into memory.

Seems to me that they're positioning the "Palm" name specifically as the sub-brand that refers to their phones. Much like iPaq used to refer to the line of their previous (acquired with Compaq) smartphones. I not sure it will exist outside of the phones, so I think that there's about a 50-50 chance that they don't name the tablet the PalmPad, as has been suggested by some.

What, their actually going to show up to a major industry event?

They'd better announce a new phone on Sprint on the 9th. I'm getting tired of waiting.

Also I want webOS 2.0 on my Pre- NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huzzah!

So... if the announcement is Feb 9 and Mobile World Congress is Feb 14-17, what does that say for release time? What is the logic in having the announcement before MWC?

There are a few notable items here:
1. The Palm name is used for smartphones so it looks like that brand will continue there, at least for now. This was unclear on the 9 Feb HP announcement notice where only HP branding was used.
2. It's not clear if there is any relationship between HP webOS and all the mentioned hardware categories - "smartphones, devices, slates and netbooks". We know that smartphones and tablets (slates) will use HP webOS but it's unclear for the other device types.
3. HP webOS and HP ePrint will definitely have some integration (not unexpected but confirmed).

Pllleeaassseee..... Let it Be WebOS 2.0 or 2.whateva on the 9th, a new phone would be nice but AT&T won't get it till its been around.

"devices"..? hmm..

separate from slates, smartphones, etc i mean..

I have a few theories of Sprint's event...and one includes HP. Here they are: (1) dual band [CDMA/GSM] smartphone[s], (2) 4G tablet that will ALSO make voice calls, or (3) HP [not Palm] webOS line-up using dul bands and 4G lol.

OK so I got it............

FEB 9th.. will be the re-introduction of WEBOS and HP ecosystem.
(they need to introduce the OS before any hardware, and even though it has already been introduced by Palm; HP needs to re-introduce it to the Masses)

MWC....Will be were they announce the actual devices and hardware.

Haha if they do that, they better say "Device/Hardware will be on display at MWC".

They are not going to send a special invitation without any tangible objects.. thats insane.

February 12 is 6mos after the release of the Torch on AT&T. Since we now know that Sprint is getting the Playbook, I would look for an announcement about the Torch or Torch+ on Sprint around the middle of February, too.

If they aren't going to be at Sprint's event i'm SOL. I am happy with Sprint service. I really don't want to switch to verizon and pay $50 more a month just to have a webos device.

Where is webos 2.0 for my pre minus?

Regardless of how it happens it just needs to do so and do so in a timely fashion... No more of this "coming months" crap!

Or how about this

FEB 7....Sprint announces some capability to allow multiple interconnected devices per subscriber. That somehow lets a person pay once for mobile data and be able to use it on say tablet and smartphone; or some other unique device.

FEB 9.....HP re-introduces WEBOS and introduces new devices, including a special sprint exclusive device or devices, that can be interconnected using a same ecosystem, taking advantage of this new sprint service.

MWC... More of a hands on with devices for media, and other announcements.

too late i ordered Evo already.

Cancel the order. Just sayin' :-)

You'll be back :o]

What 1.5 years of waiting, and you buy an evo 1 month before a big change?

Hp must release a 4G phone for me to come back. Evo is too fast. sorry.

They better have some new competitive hardware to show off. The Pre 2 and a couple of Pixies would be embarassing next to the myriad of Android devices and even the W7M phones.

PC World is speculating that Sprint will get the iP too, which might be part of Sprint's 2/7 event.

Check out the slate like device they have in this picture on the MWC website:

http://hpmwc2011.portal.dmflex.com/webos-conference/

Go to the very last picture on the page, right next to the laptop.

Exciting stuff :)

I wouldn't draw any conclusions from that image. Most likely those images are provided by an exhibit building company and were drawn by someone that doesn't work for HP and has no knowledge of what any of these new devices look like.

It's probably an Ipad =P

Thin gruel it may be, but when you're starving, it tastes like bacon... :)

hope they have new hardware as good as the iphone

I'm hoping for better than that. Other than the screen resolution the iP's specs are nothing special.

I hope we will eventually have a webOS Television, and a webOS-like interface on a touchscreen PC. Every so often I forget and try to toss a window up instead of clicking the X to close it... :)

Sprint is holding their very own event two days before HP. That probably means they have nothing to do with HP's announcement and are trying to steal their thunder. If I had to guess it would be something Android related. HP is dragging their feet while the whole industry passes them by.

Why would Sprint want to steal HP's thunder? Isn't that like apples and oranges? I would think Sprint and HP would have a sort of affinity for each other.

Aside from the debacle that was Palm Pre launch with Palm, Sprint and HP really have no ties. And if HP is announcing plans that do not include Sprint, then they have every right to down-play those plans with an announcement of their own.

Agree. If HP wants any chance, they can't lock in with Sprint only. That would be suicide.

So if a phone isnt announced at the feb 9th hp event than it has to be announced at MWC.
