HP ThinkBeyond Developer Event Liveblog! 30

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 09 Feb 2011 9:07 pm EST

We are live on the ground for HP's developer event, where we hope to get more details on Enyo, webOS 3.0, the SDK, and perhaps even how HP intends to distribute webOS 2.0 to existing devices (and which ones) now that Over-the-Air has been taken off the table.

The keynote itself starts at 7 Pacific, 10 Eastern.

Hope you guys get more info about this.

So far, this day sucks. I'm a Palm cheerleader but they've just fallen too far behind. Lead, follow or get out of the way.

what SPECIFICALLY were you lookin for?

A new phone *that I want* (that'd be the Pre3, by the way...I am one of those who think the Pre form factor is tops and thus was delighted to see the new Pre) within the coming weeks, not six months from now.

My simple interpretation: everything they showed was great. The time-frame for releasing them, absolutely unacceptable. I will be getting a Windows 7 slate and making a decision about what phone to get after I hear what Nokia says on Friday.

I wanted a new phone that's NOT slower than what everyone else has right now. I have a Pre-, OC'd to 1Ghz and still won't open Angry Birds as fast as my brother's stock Droid. I wanted a higher res screen. I wanted Apps like every other OS. I wanted it tomorrow. I could have been happy for now with a 2.0 release, but that's not gonna fly either. I could care less about a tablet. EPIC FAIL.

Palm - Masters of shooting themselves in the foot.

ok, the marketing/sales folks have had their say, and I am impressed, but now we should see the real key part - HP needs apps in their ecosystem, and this shows they realize how critical this is.

Waiting for some Enyo magic...

I think this day has been very exciting and i cant wait for the summer...things need to be built, price points and carriers need to be identified. hopefully the apps will be there.
I love this day and night.

Those things should've been done prior to today's event, or the event should've taken place later.

HP CEO Leo Apotheker on Jan. 28, 2011: “HP will stop making announcements for stuff it doesn’t have. When HP makes announcements, it will be getting ready to ship.”

Yeah, and what happened to getting ready to get rid of your ipads and iphones and stuff? Why would you get rid of them? I guess so you could be without those techy things until they decide to release the new Palm hardware.

HP has taken everything that was great about Palm and WebOs and slapped their dicks on it and then in our faces. Boy does this piss me off.

Dieter did you read what Ruby told engadget. There will be NO UPDATE OTA OR OTHERWISE.

while other employees pretty much said give us a sec and we'll figure it out and let you know when we know what can/will be done. so we cant necessarily assume the "otherwise" is final yet.

You do know that Rubinstein is a SENIOR VP, right?

What "other employees" are you thinking of?

The only employee that comes to mind has pretty much retracted her somewhat-encouraging tweet so if you have any other information, it would be nice to add to this little story.

11/19/2010: Josh Marinacci says that 2.x will be coming to all Palm devices.

01/04/2011: Palm "T'was the Week After Christmas" poem assures us that we will receive the 2.x update with Flash & stacks

02/09/2011: Jon Rubenstein - Suckers!!

The fishguy has nailed it!

Webos supporters have been used by the very people they support. I'm very disappointed. I like the PRE3 and would buy it on Sprint, but my original Pre has no WEBOS replacement available (my family contract is on Sprint until Nov.)And now, I am stuck with the realization that the phone I bought with the promises of improved API's (microphone and others), Flash, Stacks and... was all a big misrepresentation.

At the least, they should have covered this in the presentation and manned up! These are used car salesman tactics.

They are going to need every ounce of HP's power to pull this one out, and I'm not sure it's enough.

And Apotheker used the PRE2 to justify his 'We're shipping now!' statement? How low can you go?

Ruby says:

NO TWO FOR YOU!

M.

this is exciting I'm At the event. Dieter is front row I'm at the back hopefully they give out developer devices :)

the people who really should be p.o'd are us Pixi users. Most Pres won't last much longer anyway. At least that's what everyone who owns one or is on their 72 replacement has been saying for months while begging for a new phone.

You know I was excitedly watching the live blogs like everyone else, but it's still just a phone. I think HP is trying to provide devices that work together better than anyone else. They may not be the hottest thing alone, but together they rise above.

I was wondering if I wanted to forego 2.0 for a while anyway.

I'm five rows from the back, center center section. Dude with the galaxy tab and fedora.

I hope someone speaks up and tries to ask what's the point of developing if HP isn't going to stand by their promises to the consumer.

So no Opra moment

Well, we've been lied to once again read on engadget that all models older than the Pre 2 will not get WebOS 2.0. Huge dissapointment.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

If the Pre 3 isn't going for sprint, I'm out.

Just read on engadget.com. Jon Rubinstein goes against original promise for an update for all Palm phones and says that older models, basically anything not announced today will not get webOs 2.0 update. Time to switch, HP wont be on sprint.

The best summary I've yet seen of the event:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI056nhaduk

F'n funny and true!!! lmao

What? Well then when? Why a February 9 event then??? - That pretty much sums up what I got from tonight.

-No immediate production release of the highly anticipated(?) Enyo.

-No production ready products to demo (the Touchpad was far from finished and couldn't even demo its camera).

-No release dates given for product shipment.

-No gifts for us committed (almost to the point of delusion) cult-like developers which they said they are totally grateful and committed to.

-No updates to our pre-PalmPre2 devices (a none issue for me since I'm a Sprint customer and my original Pre will probably fall apart before 2.0 is released anyway).

-No Apotheker. OK, its not like I thought that he would have anything of substance to say to developers, but his presence would have at least showed HPs committment to webOS and its success.

So I go back to my original question of why Feb. 9 for this event??? Its not like they are up against the clock to announce anything since they missed CES already. Why not wait to make your big press announcement when you have something to actually announce? Shouldn't this event have happened in the summer which is when they said they would had the Touchpad's ready to ship (approximately the summer).

Well, I'm glad I live in Sonoma County and Fort Mason in SF is only a 45 minute drive for me. For all of you who came from parts a bit further - I'm sorry (someone should apologize so I'll take it upon myself).

At least they had those braised pulled pork on tiny waffle thingies. Unfortunately we didnt even get an empty HP/Palm bag so that I could have stashed a few more to go for the drive home.

That event was fairly underwhelming.

The problem is not about what was shown - but what was not shown.

HP shouldn't have hyped that event - and then utterly fail to WOW us. There was no surprise at all - except for the unfortunate about-turn re upgrades for old Pre/Pixi (-/+).

Tablet - we knew for half a year that a tablet would be coming - HP said from day 1 that's what they are mainly interested in. IMHO this would be the best tablet on the market today - we'll see how it compares in Q3.
We had rumors about a small device for weeks.

The Veer is fine IMHO - but nothing to brag about.

The Pre 3 is close to perfect for me (assuming decent battery life) - but not enough to create a big bang.

Kindle - nice, Video by Roxio - nice. Touchstone - not that new, info about its new features are a couple months old though.

I expected something like a "webos 2.x OTA updates are pushing from our servers as we speak". Instead we got a retraction and vague hint at "something special". Why the "something special" is not announced at the same time as the upgrade-retraction blows my mind. Weird marketing decision.

I also expected (in addition to a Veer-like device and hopefully something the the Pre 3) an announcement of a 4" slab device with webos - or a horizontal slider at least. Not because I want that for myself but because the demand is there.

Further I expected announcements about a large number of new software partners, new in-house apps released today, new carrier agreements, more countries covered. And new accessories like car touchstone.

Above where my (reasonable I think) "expectations" - based on HP brings global resources to Palms ingenuity, what the market has been clamoring for and the fact that HP hyped up this event.

Integration with printers and other HP products is nice and all and one day might actually be cool and stuff. But for now it's still only so much marketing bla-bla.

About the tablet: Glossy - really? That looks great on marketing clips and for a few seconds after you unwrap it. Then it's a PITA. I'd pay extra for a non-glossy back. No gesture on Touchpad? Why not? It does have plenty of bezel and it's a distinguishing feature - plus something that's now expected from existing customer base.

No virtual keyboard on the phones? That makes 0 sense. Myself I prefer the slider keyboard - but providing the option costs close to nothing and would shut up a lot of naysayers.

In short don't hype an event - and then deliver less than expected and fail to WOW.

What astounds me is that they had that clever little xmas verse where they said they listened and know what people ask for. How can they have listened and expected yesterdays event not to get a lukewarm reaction - at best.
Half the event was people talking about how great HP is - instead of wowing us with actual announcements showing us how great they are (100 new apps today, webos 2 today, tens of new software partners today, several new countries covered by spring).

What on earth kept them from giving a Pre 2 to every dev attending the event? (besides sending one to the most active homebrew devs and a couple each to the top 50 mobile app producers). Plus a 50% rebate coupon for the Touchpad. Plus announce a third app competition for webos 2/3.

The UI and multi-tasking are still the best on the market. Current hardware (Pre 2) seems decent and there's a lot of good about the Touchpad and Pre 3. But it still feels like Palm when it lacked resources last year. Heck - anybody who watched last years Palm CES announcements will remember that there was more buzz then.

sigh

Well said.

I think anyone not disappointed should join the apple cult, cause to not be underwhelmed is truly delusional!

Dear Mr. Apotheker,

As a long time fan of the Palm product line, I viewed with reserved excitement HP's acquisition of Palm. I saw this as the best hope for keeping alive what I believe is the best mobile OS in the marketplace. I have been using the same Palm Pre that I got on launch day nearly two years ago and in technology terms, that is forever. But I recognized that HP would need to time to bring Palm in to their corporate structure and to develop and release new products. I have sat on my hands and resisted the new iPhones, and Evo's and iPads as I was a true believer in the Palm of the future. I waited patiently for yesterday's "Big" webOS Announcement event expecting that I would be able to upgrade shortly thereafter.

I must say I was underwhelmed. No products immediately available; No firm dates for availability; No upgrades for existing customers; And no more Palm name! It's your company, I suppose you can do whatever you fancy, but seems a terrible marketing stumble to me to squander the cache' of a well respected 20 plus year brand!

Today, I will purchase an Apple iPad. While it may not be the best OS out there, it has one glaring advantage over your product; It is THERE! As I write this on my HP Compaq 8510p, I remember how old and dated it is beginning to feel. I may just take a look at those MacBook Pros again.

You boys at HP and Palm really efed up on this event. The Pre 3 is already outdated and you're waiting to bring it out in the summer? You've got to be kidding me. This actually hurts that you people cant keep up with the current trend in phones and you dare say "Think Beyond". Listen loud and clear, "WE WANT A SLAB EVO PHONE TYPE WITH WEBOS ON IT" is that too hard to comprehend for you cheap ********
