HP TouchPad launch party with Nick Cannon tonight in New York City 26

by Tim Stiffler-Dean Thu, 30 Jun 2011 3:32 pm EDT

If you're in the NYC area and want to see how HP gets down with launch parties, head to the Best Buy in Union Square tonight between 10:00 PM and 12:15 AM and you might be in for a cool treat. One day before the official launch across the country, HP has decided to build some excitement with the people of New York City, and has brought in a live DJ. as well as musician, comedian and actor, Nick Cannon, to give visitors a jump start on the rest of us with the HP TouchPad (by the way, have you read our review?).

Are we jealous that we can't go to the party? You bet. But then that's why we've got you. If you've got the time and ability to head in, be sure to snap a few photos to share with the rest of us (and don't forget to buy a TouchPad, of course). Oh, and if you wouldn't mind, tell Nick we said, "Hey!" He's a good name to add to the list of celebrities HP is bringing in to market the new tablet device, though we'd love to start seeing that big ad campaign finally take off.

Who is Nick Cannon?

I was just thinking the same thing.

I'm so disappointed with this launch :( I'm a webos enthusiast, but how is HP going to convince non webos enthusiasts to buy the touchpad over the ipad2 when the ipad2 is thinner, has many more apps and outperforms the touchpad. Why is the touchpad being released before the pre3? (Lets be honest... no one wants to own a veer for 2 years)

God I feel like a broken record, but I really wish they released this in the $400-$500 price range with a touchstone included.

he's a triple threat!

More like a no threat.

Rather than trying to "build excitement" wouldn't it be better to spend their time building a better touchpad?

not sure if you are aware but the people in marketing are not very good programs / industrial designers.

Good sentiment. Wrong place.

better touchpad ? do you have one or are you reading too many reviews ?

just disappointed with the end result.

I met Nick Cannon at an MTV Upfront party. I asked him why he had to hired a talent coach to help with his radio bits on the radio. He gave me an awkward laugh as to know he got caught. He radio show is HORRIBLE.

That would be great if it was the old Mariah Carey, not sure I would be excited to be married to the current, larger version.

She's still beautiful and sings beautifully!

Nick Cannon should bring his wife and then the place would really be packed

LOL. That's a win

People don't know Nick Cannon or Russel Brand, but they know their wives lot better!

I was this store last night. I found one display model tucked in the corner of the lower floor. Tried the konami code but didn't have the device password. Calendar was laggy ( i filmed it). Did not look they were preparing for a bug splash.

Also upstairs only had a dummy phone Veer.

I was at this store two nights ago, and there were 2 Touchpads on the floor upstairs, prominently on display. One was charging and one was working. I played around with it for about 15 minutes and chatted with another guy who was there to take a look.

I'm going... woo hooo! Though do we still have to wait until midnight?

probably... you also still have to pay $500.

I am glad HP is doing something in NY. Here in NW San Antonio, the BB has a huge Galaxy Tab display over their entrance. When I wen to the HP display in back, there was not only no TouchPad, but there were no Veers on display. Just stands and cardboard.

The "kid" said they had them in back & thought it might be a good idea to set up a demo-I said, I'd love to see it. He changed his mind & put nothing out.

I talked to the Manager of the store and he didn't even know what the TouchPad was. When I told him it was a new tablet going on sell tomorrow, he said they usually weren't allowed to put electronics out early. I got a blank stare when I asked why there were no Veers on display and it had been available for sell for over a month.

I walked out in disgust.

Nick Cannon is an actor (starred in Drumline), singer, and dancer. He is the current host of America's Got Talent on NBC and is very popular. And as mentioned he is married to Mariah Carey.

Still doesn't make me want to buy one for $500. Drop the price to $400 with a free touchstone or $320 without a free touchstone and then i'll buy two of them HP.

Ok, lots of random students and people here, more clubish than Best Buy.. Three dancers on stage, forcing Best Buy employees into a dance off. Fun, but the Sprint Pre launch party had booze.. Only cookies here. But fun.

I went to the BB in Deptford, NJ yesterday. The had a tiny Veer display set up, although it was almost impossible to use with the short security tether and the fact that it was glued to the screen!? I asked some pimply faced kid about the Touch Pad. He asked me if it was a phone, lol. I told him that it was a new tablet coming out from HP. He went to check and said that they didnt have any and there werent plans to set up a diplay. As i started to tell him that other BB stores have had them on display he just walked away. And that kind of attitude is the reason i avoid retail stores as much as possible and buy online.

The 2 Walmarts in town also had nothing on display nor a hint that they would be carrying it. The "sales person" also never heard of it, but he knew they'd be getting the Viewsonic Android tablet soon. They did however have a working Xoom prominently (sp?) on display next to the iPad's no touch museum case display.

Perhaps the nearby Staples will want to sell some?

Ok, highlights from last night's launch party:

1. The dancers...
2. The HP employees walking around actually seemed to know how to use it (but only basics)
3. Meeting other Precentral users
4. The fun, exciting atmosphere. They went for the young, urban, hip vibe, and pretty much succeeded.

The lowlights:
1. The man with the live rat on his head... Reminded me of the the Real Men of Genius commercial "Man with the big snake"
2. The Best Buy guys offering to take ladies "back stage" (actually, that was kinda funny)
3. No booze. The Sprint Pre launch parties were better that way. Oh well.
