HP TouchPad Video at MWC 62

Yes, we've already put our hands-on the TouchPad, but the unreleased device is a hot commodity so you should be surprised we headed over to HP's booth this morning, gave a warm hello to @twtomcat, and shot us another video of the webOS 3 tablet. What's new here for people who've already consumed every piece of TouchPad media available on the internet? Not much, friend, but it's worth a look to see some of the different keyboard sizes (S, M, L, and XL), multi-select on the email client, and a great crash in the airplane game demo (A plane crash, not a software crash).

As you can see above, the TouchPad at MWC is still a look but don't touch kind of affair, but from our brief, unapproved tapping it looks like HP is refactoring how text selection works for webOS 3.0 - which should be obvious since currently it requires holding down the shift or option physical keys. Hopefully whatever they come up with will find its way back to phones in short order.

....Is it just me or does it seem a little...well...sluggish in the transitions? Looks like switching cards or apps on my aging Pre-

And Deiter, lawl at the bozo telling you hands off

After viewing the video a second time:
1. Just like my Pre-... somethings fast and some real slow?? where is all this power going?
2. Multi taps required to invoke a command? Just like my Pre-, I have to tap somethings twice+ to get recognized...
3. I hope this is juswt prototype blues, and final product kicks *ss....

I've noticed all of this as well. If you notice from this and the Feb 9th video, they won't do any finger flicks to scroll. They make very precise and deliberate movements (as if practiced for the demo). 1.2GHz dual core should simply not be that slow. For now, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and saying this is probably why it won't launch until summer. It's just not ready yet and they are working on optimizations.

Also the whole MC Hammer approach ("You Can't Touch This") reminds me of the 1st half of 2009. :(

I noticed this as well when they were demoing a game being played. It was choppy at times. Really hope the tablet doesn't have the pre like slow downs. At least the ipad will just crash but do it quickly.

It was stated at the Developer conference that the tablet was not optimized by any stretch.

As much as it kills me to say this about my favorite OS, this tablet has more than adequate power so I'm going to have to say that our favorite OS is just unoptimized to run on any hardware period. Hopefully, with the larger team at HP they can get coding to fix webOS.

Dissapointing as RIM has announced:
Playbook:
...Wi-Fi/WiMAX model will be offered in the US by Sprint starting this summer.
(and HP TouchPad when?)
....PlayBook can support applications such as WP, email, spreadsheet and Powerpoint (and HP?)
with a connection to the Blackberry handset, with the PlayBook’s bigger screen allowing better composition and editing,”
...... confirmed that the Wi-Fi version would be shipping this quarter in the US,
...."So HP got news also, good new products but shipping later?"...

Obviously you did not pay attention. The TouchPad will come with FULL Open Office. Editing, everything.

In addition, the only thing the TouchPad needs a phone for is answering calls and getting SMSs. The Playbook is more dependent on the phone to do more.

I did pay attention, for 2 yrs now... so not counting on HP delivering on coming soon features...
Just too many missed commitments. I do hope they can produce all that that are saying, but track record of Palm not at all good and now HP is matching Palm track record by it poor announcment on Feb 9th.

Don't forget the Playbook has a GESTURE AREA!!!!!

I guess you could say the playbook is playing it's cards right by having a Gesture area??? Zing!

Also Samsung announced the 10.1 without buttons on the front, so gesture away on Galaxy, but noooo not on HP, we are bringing back buttons..
Watch the weather and news lately, no buttons, just gestures.... on thier presentation screens, hell even my wife, a teacher, now has Boards in her classrooms, and they have Gesture areas.... WOW, we just went backwards?

I salute you! Well played!

What exactly is the disappointing part?

The examples you list can't be it.
EMail - nothing new - has been available for a couple of years on webos by now.
Document editing - QuickOffice.

Playbook - summer. TouchPad - summer. So - no difference in that regard. Heck most of the Tablets that have been announced at CES won't be available before summer - if at all.

All the ads are saying 'HP Touchpad is here!'. But even Precentral is not aloud to... touch the the device!

HP "No Touchy" Pad - available in several months. Geez HP, can't you offer some firm dates?

And "Just Type" (Just not right now);)

This made me LOL

Not right now!!!!!!!!!!!!

This won't go far without powerful document editing software for the basics like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Although my laptop already does, and with the freeTether app I can now work anywhere I have 3G, so a tablet would be an impulse buy anyway.

funny how they don't let you touch the hardware. Why even show it then? Just like at the de event in sf they wouldn't let anybody handle the touch pad.

They don't want people realizing it is no where near ready for release. If they control the screen, they can give the illusion it is close to being retail-ready. Not showing Just Type tells me they are still trying to figure some things out.

Just like the original Pre.

For a dual core device @ 1.2Ghz, it seemed a lil slugish.

Yeah, I'm hoping that this "demo" device doesn't have the actual "guts" of the proposed release device. I agree is seems a little anemic.

webos is laggy, it wasn't even a lag here or there. Nearly the entire demonstration was laggy, the email part was just unbearable. I'm the farthest thing from an Apple fan but they would at least never show off a device doing this poorly.

If HP wants to beat Apple at their game they need to sit down and ask themselves "would Apple show off or release something in this devices current state?" If the answer is "NO" because of the way it performs they need to make that a "Yes."

NO TOUCHING!

Nein! Nein! Nein! Hände weg von der Tablette!

(At least, according to Google translate. BTW, reverse translation is "No! No! No! Steer clear of the pill!".)

I think I see why the gesture area is gone. With the new user interface functions there just are not enough motion variations you could do on one spot. Maybe they could bring the camera into play: Swipe left while wiggling your nose?

can't see the video...ffs either you rename to pre2central.net or make sure your videolinks are in webos 1.45 formats!!!!

I'm a pre plus and webs fan, but I just watched this video and the playbook video over at crackberry and the playbook just sh!t on the Touchpad. Using the playbook, the guy was able to minimize Need for Speed and launch another game, all while continuing to play Need for Speed.

in a competition against the DonTouchPad, even the iPad 1 wins hands down.

Lol @ the Don'Touchpad.

I get it, now. The software is not ready for the Touchpad and it's all hands on deck for the engineers at HP to get it finished in time for the summer launch. Including anyone working on Webos2, thus no older devices will be updated.

I know they have intimated this, but seeing how far they have to go in the video, it has finally sunk through to my addled brain.

And I would think that just type would have been ready first, but I don't understand what changes they needed to make from Universal Search.

I agree that the BB playbook looks very sweet in the demo at crackberry. I know that RIM has plainly stolen a lot of the best interface ideas from WebOS, but I'm not sure that HP/Palm still has the creativity of the people that came up with the good ideas in the first place. On top of that, their awfully cheezy "everybody on" campaign does not inspire ideas of creativity and originality.

In the end, I'm just not sure I can trust HP as a company that is really interested in creating something uniquely special. My impression is that they are just looking for their piece of the pie. Sure it's business, but from a creative standpoint market share is rarely the best inspiration.

I don't know if RIM is any better, but I'm definitely having a look see at what they're bringing to the table this year.

HP cut a deal with Rim, you get gestures, and we keep "in coming months" .....

I too will definitely be putting hands on a Playbook when it becomes available. I also like the smaller 7" form factor. Not saying outright "I'm gonna buy one", but I'll definitely be looking.

I'm with you. Blackberry may have totally ripped off much of webOS, But it's all about execution. They have executed their demonstrations and marketing very well so far. They have a headstart and gaining some good momentum. Fromwhat I've been seeing out there right now from all the other tablets I'm going playbook. Gestures is a huge deal for me. Why did hp think it wasn't that important?

I think Tampax already has the "No TouchPad"
HP may have to try another name....

Yes, it's webOS' evil clone but with cooler toys!

cooler everything and it's not vaporware

OMG! HP are you listening? The Playbook is what we expected our beloved webOS tablet to be! You know, fast, multitasking, with a gesture area & AVAILABLE NOW! Every time I see a Playbook demo, I'm getting jealous & when I see a Touchpad demo, my stomach turns because of the lagginess & uncharacteristic non-gestures because there is no gesture area!!!

I hope they reconsider the final and/or next model. They do listen to us on Precentral, don't they?

Dieter, Derek, Keith, can't you say something to them on behalf of us all?

Jeezzzzz.... Playbook most definately worth a look, it has me as excited as Original Pre announcment did 2+ years ago..damnnnn

The more that comes out from HP and their "new" products, the more I am reminded of George Carlin when he said Mongolian Cluster F*ck.

Sigh.........

I don't know what to think of this.

I am not complaining here, but when executives come out telling people to prepare for something so cool you'll want to dump your IPhones and they hit you with this (Feb.9)......???? Makes you wonder where they are in terms of cool?

How many people can we assume got rid of their IPhones as a result of Feb.9?

Hahah

"Not supposed to let anyone...."

"I'm being quick...what happens if I..?" grab it run!

LOL

No touch for you!

I like this and can see myself getting one when the final product and software is complete. End of summer perhaps...sick of waiting btw, preaching to the choir I know. They should be annoucing this as a prototype of the TouchPad, and not the actual device. Software seems incomplete, hardware, eh. Not a good marketing strategy.

No gestures is a big deal. Whoever made that decision just gave all the other tablets an even bigger head start.

I really like how they positioned the speakers, and the more I see the notification system, the more I like it.

didn't they say they are building webos 3.0 from the ground up? Starting from scratch? Pretty sure that will be in the best interest of the end user when it does come to fruition. The software will be optimized by release but I'm am happy to see a commitment to releasing a solid device than to port webos to pad and rush out the me2 product that everyone else did after ipad success. Sure others are catching up but in the end I expect a solid device. As far as playbook continuing to play as you open another card..that sounds terrible to me. If I'm opening another card I want my game paused as my attention has been shifted for a reason...end user experience.

as noted above, it seems like there is about the exact same amount of lag/delay as I have on my Sprint Pre-.

That is not good. It took the email app in that demo the same amount of time to open as it does now. You'd think that with a new dual core processor and refined OS, that things would be much quicker. Also, the lag going from landscape to portrait was horrendous. I expereince that now too.

I am really not sure what I am going to do. Like a lot of other Premier memebers, I'm going to be hosed as of March 31st if I don't upgrade, I'll lose that $150 credit. My Pre- is dying.

Those of us who are Premier customers need to find out exactly how HP and Sprint are going to handle those of us on WebOS devices.

Even though I have 5 lines on Sprint, I'm tempted to go over to Verizon.

At the feb9 dev event they pretty much bragged that everything was unoptimized.
wow.

so heres the thing--you can build your product, good and efficient and thoughtful, good battery life, no memory leaks, etc.
OR not, and then tell your engineers, possibly different ones than wrote the code, to go back and optimize everything. Be sure to give them not enough time to do that mundane job as well.

incase anyone missed it, the second--NOT the way to go, but the way palm has gone, to all our detriment.

oh, and total agreement on the gesture area. BB and android and iOS are going gesture--yeah, we're definitely moving backward. *sigh*

I never thought I would say it but I'm beginning to agree with the masses. Does HP really want webOs to succeed? Just saw an ad by HTC which begins with some guy picking up a phone shape pebble then showing a HTC phone(only thing the pebble more resembles a pre). The ad's point is that the phone is a continuation of what we do everyday. We touch stuff so touchscreen. We turn pages so the swipe UI.

I'm thinking that should be the kind of ad webOS has. HP better get aggressive or the OS will go down as one of those great ideas that never caught on. They need to connect to the masses. Forget about damn Apple show what webOS can do on great devices. This kid gloves 'consumer figure it out' crap is getting old. Go for the damn jugulat HP you can afford. There I said my piece.

Is that guy chewing gum and giving the presentation or does he just love smacking his lips?

Maybe he is sucking...on a mint?

It is very annoying, especially for a presenter to do.

Wow, awesome, love the way the UI works.

I wonder why the guy wouldn't show the just type feature at the end of the video.

The software looks pretty incomplete as well. Did folks notice how constrained the demo was ? Maybe they'll be done in about 4 months which is time that they sorely need to finish the core software for that device. A bit disappointing, but cross my fingers to their success.

you would think the person doing the demo would know how to work everything a little better, he didnt even know how to use the SI or the kindle app beside turn the page lol good job hp

fuck you hp! Somebody buy webos!

is there perhaps still no GPU acceleration for transitions?

Those commenting about the playbooks snappiness have to remember that when it was first introduced it too was pretty laggy. I'm sure WebOS will be optimized for the Touchpad.

The thing that I am pretty disappointed about is the fact that RIM took a chance on a gesture area. It remains to be since how it will work with the masses in practical application but I do wish HP had been the one to try it out.
