HP: Veer 'on course' for May release; plus reader TouchPad hands-on 34

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 30 Mar 2011 3:26 pm EDT

PreCentral reader Adam is on the ground at webOS connect and let us know that HP's VP of Worldwide Developer Relations, Richard Kerris, said that HP is "on course" to deliver the Veer in May (Kerris also gives a mean interview, if you didn't know). That doesn't necessarily mean that the carriers will release the little tyke in the same span, but then again O2 Germany promised May earlier this month. Hopefully HP will manage to stick to that "late spring" timetable - proving they can hit a deadline on the mini Veer will make us feel a whole let better that they can do the same with the mighty Pre 3 in the summer.

Adam also grabbed a quick video of the TouchPad at the event, which you can watch in all it's crowded-room glory after the break. Thanks Adam!

Dieter - they NEVER said Late Spring... it was EARLY Spring ... check out an article from YOUR site to see proof: http://www.precentral.net/hp-unveils-veer-webos-goes-small-mighty

But their website says 'this spring'...

Spring is spring. Hopefully they'll give us a set date soon. I would hate to wait until May 31st to find out they'll miss May.

But they announced EARLY Spring and even PreCentral wrote that and ever since they've only ever said LATE Spring, which is horribly incorrect.

just as i had predicted, a may release [at earliest].. guess i might win the [proverbial] pool after all! :)

As a business, it's really important to be honest and transparent, and follow-through with your commitments.

It's about investor and consumer confidence. To the folks arguing about this:

You can argue, if you're lucky you'll convince 1 person on these forums. More likely you'll hurt people and cause confrontations. The majority of consumers and investors will not read what you write here, and to argue that they're not wrong, well.. not very convincing.

You're right. As much as I like webOS I don't see it succeeding in the mobile world unless HP changes their way of thinking. It might survive the tablet world because that is what HP is focusing on right now.

The Pre 3 is going to be their flagship device on the phone front of things. As much as I want to believe the Pre 3 will be competitive, I keep thinking of all the high-end Android devices like the EVO 3D and Galaxy S II. I also think of the iPhone 5. The Pre 3 will be released about the same time or later than these other devices and will be lost in the mix. Unfortunately the Pre 3 and Veer will be too little(literally) too late.

Here's hoping for an EVO sized webOS phone!!

It was mentioned at the London Connect event yesterday that there would be more devices this year. They made no commitment on devices or dates as they are required to announce and launch in short order now (the Feb event was planned before that policy came in) but they made it clear the Pre3 would not be the last device this year and we can expect a few. They pointed out that hardware design, development and release cycles are now all being handled by the HP team that produces so many new devices every year and are well experienced at keeping innovations rolling.

My money is on the fabled 7" tablet, a slab phone and maybe one other device in the Autumn.

And i shall call him... Mini Pre.

Sigh.

I WANT the Veer!

Don't need screen real estate!

Don't need fancy-pantsy doo-dahs that the Pre3 will have.

I want SMALL and I want WEBOS!

Unfortunately, I'm on Verizon Wireless. So I guess I also want CDMA.

Sigh.

so your saying you want small webos? :)

now, why couldn't they let ruby share this info with josh a few days ago on the engadget show rather than let him go out there with NOTHING to say?

Because Ruby only knows how to say "we have a great lineup of products coming...in the coming months". I cringe every time I hear he's going to make an appearance somewhere. The guy should not be the public face of webOS. He's had the same pitch since Jan of '09

And that pitch is a hanging slider that all of our competitors keep hitting out of the park by bringing out their hardware on time and full of the features our beloved Pre should have!!

He did change the story from "in the coming months" to "soon" last Friday. May is still "in the coming months" in my book. Always so vague - so annoying to hear this stuff. He should have passed on the interview. Joshua even showed his frustration with the lack of response to most "useful" questions.

according to the 2011-2012 Almanac,

Spring begins March 20 at 7:21PM and ends June 21 at 1:16 PM. If the veer is released in may, that would be considered mid spring.

according to the 2011-2012 Almanac,

Summer begins June 21 at 1:16Pm and ends Sept 23 at 5:05am. If the Pre3 is released in August, that would be considered mid summer.

Everyone chill out.

HaHaHa, I Love This Comment

We need to know the carriers that will have the new phones. Basically, if there's nothing keeping me at Sprint I am looking at all of my options.

HP, this is how to keep current Pre owners (yes, there are so few of us they don't care, I know).

I'd love a Pre³, but I also need to know that webOS won't be abandoned by the market before my next contract expires. If HP waits too long to get the Pre³ to market, I might end up with a fruit-flavored phone instead.

Its what happened to me with the Pre-. I lost mine in a bar mid february whit sprint... I now have a cult phone through ATT. ATT's service is a **** in the wind comparatively... I miss Sprint.

Wow... really? They censored f-art?

Of course they'd lead webOS back into the world with their baby phone with baby specs. Makes perfect sense. Start with the baby phone and watch it grow into a Pre3 then mature into a TouchPad.

Anyone notice the updated Device Menu with a brightness scrubber in the TouchPad video?

Are you getting too excited about 2 new phones for WebOS "sometime" this spring/summer? this is absolutely pathetic! There are a dozen new androids every month! RIM is going to run Android apps now and guess what, Droid has flash! a feature promised to us legacy owners forever ago - now were left out to flop in the wind.
WebOS 2.1 runs awesome on my Verizon Pre+ and supposedly it runs great on a Pre- also., so why didn't we get it thru HP instead of them abandoning us? HP could give a **** less about your "Devotion" what happened to "we'll make it right for current Palm owners"? when was that statement made, over a month ago? There IS a reason NO manufacturer outside of HP want anything to do with WebOS, It is flopping in the wind just like us, on the verge of being blown away forever by something that is not better but actually has a future. Bad marketing, only 2 devices in over two years? really? Remember SEGA? they used to build consoles., now they only make software,.this is where WebOS is going...i think it's time to hack Webos onto some Droids and see that piss some people off. I'm tired of being the one pissed off...and now i'm done.
P.S. Precentral, disable those as*hats who keep posting spam all over!

it's just a phone...

Since no comments yet on the TouchPad, I wanted to say how quick and responsive it seemed.

Also, on battery life he said he used it daily on one charge. He also said he used it as a hotspot for a lot of the day.

I told him he had to get the battery life better because I have to charge my pre2 twice a day (I use it a lot!).

It actually ran out of charge during the event after the second charge of the day.

man
you must really be a power user then

Well, I tweeted a few times, recorded the videos that Dieter uploaded (pretty short ones). I did have the camera app open just in case for about 30 min.

I left work at 5PM with 100%, had run out by 8:45PM.

I did sent 2 e-mails with the videos to Dieter, and boy did they make my pre2 HOT. That was where most of the energy ran out, there was no WIFI (at least none that I could access) and I only had 2 bars of 3G so it took a while to send the emails.

I also made a few notes on my pre2 during the Q&A but had to switch to paper and pen when the phone died. Hopefully these guys should be adding the Q&A to the site shortly.

Oh, I also used googlemaps to find the place!

LOL, I did the same but at lunchtime so I could walk straight there after work so my pre- got an afternoon top-up.

There was wifi at the event but, strangely, it was both password protected (managed to guess that easily enough) AND captive portal so not much good (like the way 2.1 handles that BTW).

What network are you on? I got no 3G on O2 and only 3 bars of 2G but I guess Vodafone had coverage judging by the TouchPad demo.

I'm lucky if I get 6 hours of minimal usage out of my pre 2 - but people's experiences with battery life on the pre 2 seem to be all over the place. Having a touchstone at work is a requirement for sure!

If the veer shows better battery life I'll jump at it!

Any idea which carriers the little guy will be on?

it will either be unlocked gsm or at&t&t

HAHAHAH no way, 6hrs of battery life with minimal usage. I would trash such a phone after 1 week!No phone will ever be so cool to let me charges this ***er 2x a day. It' could be bloodys darth vaders phone with an integrated light sabre and with a special button "10000 blondes naked in my room all ready for action" .. still I wouldn't use this sucka

HP said "early" spring.
Early in my book means "first half" or rather "first third" of spring. That would translate to 31 to 46 days from March 20, resulting in a time frame from April 20 (optimistic) to May 5 in the evening (at the latest). Everything after May 5 will be "late spring" or " second half" (ha!) of spring. Sorry HP, you gotta speed up a little...
