HP Veer Q&A: What do you want to know? 145

by Derek Kessler Mon, 09 May 2011 5:53 pm EDT

So you've read PreCentral's complete and comprehensive review of the AT&T HP Veer 4G, and now you've got a question you want answered. And we, being the talkative folks that we are, and currently in possession of a Veer, want to give you the answers you seek. So we're asking: what do you want to know? Sound off in the comments below with your queries concerning the minuscule HP smartphone, and we'll do our best to answer what's sure to be a hefty selection come tomorrow.

When will the pre 3 come out on Sprint?
... you asked what I want to know!

For that matter, when will the Pre³ be out for US GSM? I wouldn't describe going from a Pre 2 to a Veer as an upgrade--maybe a lateral.

Would you go so far as a UTAH PASS?

Oh no no no.... The REAL question on everyone's mind is:

Is it WINNING? Duh!

Edit: C'mon people, have a fricken sense of humor.

Truly? I want to know if HP is killing the candy-bar style phone forever, or will we see the Pixi-Plus-SuperDuper-111 in coming months/years.(?) This will tell me if I should seriously consider the Veer.

All things being equal (price, carrier, magnetic port) which phone would you choose as your everyday phone, the Pre 2 or the Veer?

neither. Both phones bring nothing new to the table while ios and android are passing webos with super speed.

EDIT: You can vote me down all you like, but what's worse is you can't come up with an argument as to why anyone would want this phone over an iphone. (at least not yet)

You could make an argument that the apps for iOS were passing WebOS apps at super speed but its far from the truth when you throw the Pre3 into the mix. From the specs alone, it is a much better phone except for pixel density.

From what I can tell, the Veer is the product of what happens when hp mates a Pixi Plus with a Pre 2. The really new thing is the magnetic connector.

the magnetic connector sucks balls.

yup... it really makes the phone lose appeal to me.

I dunno, it kind of grabs me...

now thats funny....veer offspring of the pixi and pre

huh? What exactly is so better with the Pre3 over the top of the line android or iphone? Wait, do you mean it has a better resolution screen? No? Oh, wait, you must mean that it has smoother fluidity when you scroll! What, no? Oh, I know, it doesn't have lag! Huh? Wait no that's not it. Ah! It must have tons more apps! Hmmm....

Oh right - it has the touch stone!

Oh shucks. a 3rd party came out with a wireless charger for that too.

hmmmm.... you got me on this one....

You really only have an argument with screen resolution and apps. The other things are software matters and the final build of the phone and the OS it will ship with hasn't been seen yet. The touchstone thing, it is the only phone that requires no other adapter to work with inductive charging. You can't charge an iphone on a power mat or anything without a special case for it. the apps will (hopefully) come with the hardware. There's no hardware to develop for right now with the pre 3 so of course there wont be apps for an unreleased phone.

exactly, nothing has been shipped yet, and yet everyone here keeps talking about how great the pre 3 is going to be. If history repeats itself, the pre 3 will be another wash from HPalm. Everyone else is comparing it to the iphone, yet I can hold the iphone and use it. Who is holding a Pre 3? What about a touchpad? OH, right - "in the coming months"

Everyone was/is so excited about the touchpad. Everyone talked about how awesome it is going to be when it will be released, yet not one person has seen final revision of the product. It's like you guys have a religious belief in a company that has proven itself time and time again to fail it's customers. The iPad2 smokes everything else out there with performance unmatched. Hold one and see what I'm talking aobut. (And no, I'm not an apple fanboy - I have Palm products, at least for the next month or two) This is reality. You can wake up and see what everyone is craving about, or you can stay sheltered and believe in something that won't come.

OH, and the touchstone - the Pre requires a backplate to work too. Just because phone manufacturers "include" this doesn't make it any different.

@mattbrad2 How can u compare the IPHONE to the Pre3? THE Pre 3 hasnt even been released! Lmmfao your hilarious!

For that matter you can can't compare an iphone 4 with the pre3, the pre 3 is a known quantity, and it's only really competes with the iphone 4. It will probably get destroyed by the iphone 5.

I love the Apple trolls who obviously have no idea what they are talking about and have these huge blinders toward the rest of technology. You see, XPrePlusOwner, the Pre3 is basically the Pre2 but with a better processor and slightly larger keyboard and screen. The Pre2 alone is at least as good of a phone as the iPhone, it only stands to reason the Pre3 will be better. I'll hold my tongue with the iPhone 5 as I'm sure it will mop the floor with other competitors but we don't know anything about it yet, so.... we'll just wait and see.

You have to understand something about people like that. They are probably the same ones who got glassy eyed when Apple released copy and paste in 2009.

yes, similar to how Palm users got "glassy eyed" when Palm finally released a camera app that could record. Oh, by the way, what interface did they copy from? Ah, yes, the iphone.....

Or perhaps it's the same people that get glossy eyed when a company finally introduces voice dial when the entire industry has been doing it for years?

BTW - the apple copy and paste is magnitudes better than Palm's

Right - apple trolls who have no idea what they're talking about. Yea, give me one day in history when the Palm Pre has EVER surpassed the iphone in performance. "Huge Blinders?" The only one wearing huge blinders are you, my friend. You continue to support and think Palm has the greatest product to date, yet the Palm community fails to realize they are wrong. Anyone who makes a statement like that has never operated the latest iphone long enough to enjoy it. The entire industry is focused around the iphone. New apps AND accessories from manufacturers ALWAYS include something for the iphone. When was the last time you heard of a company ONLY focusing on Palm software? Right, I thought so. Who is wearing the blinders now?

You don't think I want to see Palm succeed? Of course I do, but at some point in your life you have to realize that some companies just don't have what it takes. HPalm has convinced the majority of the phone industry over and over again that they are very good at messing up.

@mattbrad2 i am far from an Apple troll! I have severe disdain for the Ibrand! I do not like the Iphone, Ipad, Ipod or Mac cpu's, but i wont begin to compare their success to that of HP's....or their hugley popular phone to one of ours which wont be released for who knows how long! In that case lets start comparing the Ipad 3D to the TouchPad....

Wait, did you just say that the Pre2 is as good as an iPhone??? Holy moly, you are kidding yourself. If a DVD player has no DVDs, it's worthless. If a car has no gas, it's worthless. Pre2 has no apps... it's worthless.

AMEN!

Usually, the most capable and popular webOS smartphones are the ones that haven't been released yet. webOS is all about potential - not performance.

If that's a joke, then that was funny. If serious, that's a laugh.

This is something I'd like to know, too.

Am I able to put my Pre 2 Sim Card into the veer?

it doesn't specify micro-sim
so yes

How is the GPS, does it lock fast and accurate in Yp Mobile and google maps?

Why doesnt H/P make cutting edge technology, like more DPI's for screen, bigger battery, slate form. Then H/P could say our phone is tiniest and slimest.

The bottom line is that it really doesn't "need" to. It needs better ads and market saturation. The OS speaks for itself. If you are purchasing phones based soley on DPI then you are just purchasing toys and gadgets and not really purchasing something that is better for your needs.

''It doesnt really need to''? Lol your crazy they have 2% of the smartphone market...i think u could make an argument they do need cutting edge tech...their cards arent selling them phones...and Blackberry has already stolen those from Webos! Lmao @they dont really need to!

Did the Pre Plus kick your dog or something? You couldn't use the ONE phone I could recommend to my grandmother? Thats sad. The 2% you so graciously brought up is actually pretty good considering, oh I don't know.. THEY DIDN'T ADVERTISE THE PHONE AT ALL. Any product that carries 2% market share from zero advertising and basically only one carrier in the US actively setting it is a pretty good accomplishment. They're in the beginning of rebooting the WebOS brand, which by the way, completely utterly trounces iOS in every way from an operating system point of view. You're going to have to deal with that fact at some point, troller.

Are u mattbrad really bragging that a COMPANY DOES NOT ADVERTISE THEIR PRODUCT?

I'm worried for you my friend XPrePlusOwner, it seems as if you are afflicted with every post you type, telling us you are "lmao" in some form or another. Given that self-induced affliction, you might want to take it easy and recuperate from your 'lmao' lobotomy.

;) Just kidding around a bit, sorry to offend.

I think i have some sort of post traumatic stress syndrom...the whole in the coming months thing killed me...i always believed palm when they said they would release webos2.0 on the 'Legacy' devices, or make things right. I was the most die hard advocate for webos, until i took them blinders off. Then i realized that hp was shafting its faithful! They are not giving their own products a chance to succeed therefore breaking the hearts of the people who love the OS!

Ya....how long did Tina stick around Ike before she got outta Motown?

(Pssst....we're Tina in that metaphor)

How does Boot time compare to Pixi?

Why AT&T? Seems like the most rabid WebOS users are with CDMA carriers. What are the CDMA plans for the WebOS future, especially with regard to the Veer (which I want desperately but due to contract and satisfaction of service will NOT be jumping to AT&T to get).

Because ATT wanted the Veer more than Verizon. And Sprint is relatively broke so it couldn't bid. From HP standpoint, ATT has market share even if network is weak in areas. (My VW Pre+ usually has better signal strength and fewer dropped calls compared to my ATT iphone4 in NJ)

Maybe the reason Sprint didn't want it, was because the Pre was a friggin failure. They have seen the way with Android.

Because maybe CDMA is used by a really small segment of the world's people. GSM stands for Global System for Mobility, and well, maybe they might sell some to the rest of the globe.

What do you think the odds of a CDMA version of the Veer?

What other football play would have been a better name then the Veer??
I do like the name though. Nice review Mr. Kessler, very good indeed.

Zero. Not enough room for a CDMA radio. They would have to completely redesign the thing to support Verizon and Sprint.

Agreed, plus, with such a small battery, the device just wouldn't have enough juice to make it through the day.

Excellent point. I've never thought of that but you are exactly right.

true. i wonder why they aren't releasing on t-mobile too. the white veer would go well with their "look"

>>>>>>>>Voice to Text ????????????????????

I want to see a recorded speed test (opening apps, switching thru apps, and browser tests) between the Veer and all previous webOS devices!

Is voice dialing fixed? Can you use it without eliminating all of your system sounds?

Uh, what?

Haven't been following this bug?

It's kinda academic to me, unless they figure out how to squeeze a CDMA radio in there for a later version.. but how do you find the typing? I've got reasonably big hands, and my Pre- is pretty capable, but I can't imagine going much smaller.

Thanks!

Can HP’s $99 mini-phone tempt buyers away from the iPhone 3GS or cheaper Android offerings?

You're talking about two (or three) completely different demographics. The Veer is for those looking for a small smartphone. Thats about it.

The number of people looking for a small smartphone won't be enough to make this thing a success.

How does it compare to the pixi keyboard?

(the review confused me saying "unlike the flat keys on the pixi..")

I'm guessing that was an error. The Pixi definately has bumpier keys (they stick up higher) than the Pre.

I would like to know:

When will they "make things right" for us Guinea Pigs ^W^W Sprint Users?

M.

webOS 2.1.0 has issues with playback of some audio streams. I'm curious to see if 2.1.2 fixes this. How is the streaming experience? Does this link work?: http://icecast1.fiberpipe.net:10000/ktik.mp3 (sports talk radio in Boise, ID)

Thanks.

does the veer support whole device encryption? (my work exchange server requires this - the pre2 doesn't and i baly need a new phone), thanks

The Moto Droid Pro does..it has Pre2 like specs..its pretty cheap too!

Ya; wait for a response from Derek, and don't listen to the pouty child above me.

Pouty child? Oh i forgot nobody is allowed to consider anything other than the wide selection offered by hp...my bad! Sorry celenon i forgot we were in 1940's Germany and wasnt allowed to mention another platform!

People, read the following and try to understand how HP is planning to use its mobile portfolio (TP and smartphones and other webOS connected devices) in the long run. webOS will kick **** of androids man.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-09/hp-woos-business-laptop-buyers-...

If HP is partnering with Sprint for the wireless bandwidth, then why not for other products? I'd suspect a relationship between Sprint and the Pre 3 is only a matter of time.

As I am an intense user of Instant Messaging (Google Talk), how does it perform on the Veer? On my unlocked Pre 2 it disconnects every now and then, a couple times per day (depends on my movements around city/country), making it too unreliable to be useful.
Has this been tested on the Veer?

How do you feel about the white finish? Do you think it will be prone to scuffing or discoloration? I haven't made up my mind about which color to get.

Does the native IM app work correctly. It LAGS like a SOB on my Pre-.
Also, are you finally able to open the camera take a picture, close the app only to realize you want to take another picture. Then reopen the camera app without having to wait 1 min or restart the damn phone?

Pre- (although overclocked) has major problems with native apps. Not cool. Im hoping its just a RAM thing.

what is the veer's projected sales that at&t or hp expect?

Have you tested it with BlueTooth headphones, and how is the quality of sound? (I recognize that that has as much if not more to do with the headphones.)

How likely does it seem that someone could 'Veerinstein' one of these babies onto Sprint?

I would venture impossible since it doesn't have a CDMA radio in it.

Does it come with a pouch like the original Pre? If so, can you post a picture of it ?

Does it sport any type of myfi or hotspot capabilities?

Yes, READ the review. Up to 5 devices tethered.

Oh, I just got it. PC is asking us for the questions, but the answers will be coming "soon!" :) Sorry, Derek, the filter didn't kick in this time! (I know you will try your hardest.)

In light of the Veer "4G" being GSM, I would like to know the following: Will HP release an unlocked Veer, and if so, when? Regardless of the above, will HP lower the unlocked price of the Pre 2? It's been at $449 at HP's website for nearly six months now.

I doubt the price of the Pre2 will come down at all. It will EOL before that could happen. $449 is probably near its manufacturing cost. They say the iPhone if manufactured in the US would cost over $1k to produce. Remember the original Pre's manufacturing cost was about $450 also. It retailed for $599 when it came out and a year later went EOL before the manufacturing costs even budged.

I remember iSuppli said it was around $120 to manufacture (not certain, and not gonna waste time to search for it....OH NO...Ike's home), but yes that doesn't count the IP.

If you buy an off-contract phone on AT&T, do they unlock it? Or would they unlock it if you mentioned you're going overseas?

Can you install Preware on the Veer yet? How many patches and homebrew apps work?

If I do get a Veer, I'd like to use it in tandem with other devices—like a tablet for instance. How long does the battery last when using AT&T's Mobile Hotspot app? What about when using other homebrew alternatives (USB, Bluetooth and WiFi tethering)?

One of the "other" reviewers said the Veer was slow, hung up and froze often. BUT you or none of the other reviewers have mentioned this; in fact, most reviewers seem quite happy w/the speed/snappiness of the Veer.

Did you all experience any of the hang ups, freezing of the screen, or slowness that this guy mentioned, or were you overall happy w/the performance of the Veer?

Based on the Veer's $100 price, what do you predict the Pre3 to sell at?

Two words: Battery life.

Edit: Oops. Just realized I didn't finish reading the review earlier. Yeah, you pretty much covered it!

Does it smell exactly like a panda?

I know this might be a stupid question, but can you put it in USB drive mode? if so, is the file transfer somewhat faster than normal USB connections (since it utilizes that spell pin-cord thingy).

How loud is the speaker and how good are the ringtones?

I tend to have my phone in my jacket and sometimes miss calls because the phone is not loud enough.

Will there be an advertising campaign for these devices? If not for these websites i wud never know it was being released!! How does HP plan on generating exposure? They need a strong tv ad campaign to even think about competeing with the DROID bombardment!

I want to know who cares, and when pre3 is coming to sprint :P

really, this is a dumb phone, I can't think of anyone who would want one.

My guess is HP's hoping parents will want this phone for their 12-16yr old after refusing to get them an iPhone. Girls like "cute" things.

People like you make this site worse.

They asked what I want to know. I'm not a 12 year old girl that wants a white or pink phone so i can be cool. I want a usable enterprise smart phone with good battery life that isn't half engineered and falling apart after 6 months.

I want good enterprise apps, and a decent selection of consumer apps. I want a screen I can read email and technet articles on.

I want a support infrastructure so I know that if I purchase a device that i'm stuck with for 2 years that I will still get updates, apps, and have usability for the whole life of the phone.

so far with the pre-, I haven't gotten any of that.

Palm made the best OS for mobile since palmOS, it's intuitive, easy to use, clean and nice looking. It can truly multitask with an ease of use not seen since windows pcs. But it's hampered the whole way, but shoddy hardware, bad marketing, and limited customer support/feedback. Now they are releasing phones that are 6-12 months behind on specs for their "flagship" phone (yes, great proc, but it's not going to sell on that alone).

Will this phone do well with grandma and little lucy, maybe. Droid sells big numbers because have a few crazy speced super phones and market the **** out of them, then the centro mid and low end smart phones follow suit. Working backwards won't do anything but waste investment dollars into a phone that won't sell, the more devs won't write for it cause another phone didn't sell.

HP: get the super phone out (pre4?) NOW. then release tablet that better have xoom specs or better, then roll out the rest the of the line up with phone waiting to come out every 10-12 months. and for god sakes, bribe some devs and get some apps already.

In your review, you complained that the headphone-cable-down adapter interfered with typing and it's design made it impossible to attach up-side-down. However, Laptopmag.com's review complains that the headphone-cable-up adapter interferes with the power button and has the photos to prove it. Are there two headphone adapters floating around in meatspace?

Dear IcerC,

I have carefully re-examined the photo at the link you provided above, as well as precentral's own review photos and I must say that it DOES look like a cable-up version of the adapter. See for yourself at:

http://www.laptopmag.com/review/newgallery.aspx?id=43241&img=19

Pay close attention to the shape of the "cowl" and remember that precentral said, "As with the charging cable, the cowl on the headphone adapter ensures that it only attaches in one direction."

Aside from the fact they gave the Veer 2.5 out of 5, I doubt laptopmag.com is that stupid.

The only Veer I'd get is unlocked.

I've read about unlock services. Are they illegal? Do they void the warranty? If buy a Veer and unlock with one of these services, will ATT allow me to be a pay-as-you-person? Can an unlocked Veer get access to the App Catalog? Can an unlocked Veer use data from any carrier I get a SIM card from? Will ATT unlock my Veer?

I am just wonder why, if a lot of Hpalms fan base is being left behind already, should we "upgrade" to a phone that is pretty much the same as the pre? Also, being about half of a droid how would it make sense to stay with this company, I love ya webos but you are making it so hard to take you seriously.

I can't wait for June

....so I can buy a SENSATION! and have a warrantee and support and apps and....

Sorry Ike honey???.....yes I'll get my sorry backside down there right now dear.

What I want to know is: CAN I HAVE A FREE ONE???

Nobody's talking about Quickoffice on the phone which HP says is supposed to come pre-installed: http://h30458.www3.hp.com/us/us/smb/1066509.html?jumpid=em_taw_US_apr11_...
Is it there? How is it working if so?

It's there, but document editing isn't available yet. I believe that is coming with the Pre3 and/or webOS 3.0

Hi all,

I think many of you are missing the point of this phone. This phone is going where the Centro went...to people who haven't had a smartphone before...that leaves out almost all of us.

This isn't supposed to be a sold as a trade up from the Pre2!

I have stated it many time son this site. I am very happy that HP will have a webOS smartphone category.

1. entry level: VEER
2. Power user/experienced smartphone owner: Pre3
3. keybaord-less/slab smartphone: From what we have all read there is at least one perhaps as many as two slab phones on it's way.
4. Pad users: One and perhaps 2 models.

I expect all of this before calender year 2011 is over. I also expect that they will be rolling out new smartphones annually from here on out!

Which is the reason that I am strongly thinking about doing one of the following:

1. A ONE year contract if they will still be available

2 buying the phone from Best Buy as they have a program where you get a new phone yearly with them giving you a trade in value.

Take care,

jay

you can expect all you want, all you're going on is your own assumptions and reading blogs and forums.

take care.

Easy d-bag, no need to mock others... unless you're assumptions lead you to believe they will be amused by your incompetence.

Only problem is that each of the WebOS 2.x devices thus far is only carried by ONE carrier (technically, you can use a Pre 2 on AT&T, but they do not carry it, subsidize it or support it).

The slab is still a rumor. The Pre 3 and TouchPad have no carriers announced. So there's really no vision or overarching plan linking them all as of yet. Just aimless releases.

I don't get why a custom connector and integrated battery are such a big problem...Iphone does the same thing and more and it's not affecting sales or use one little bit.

The reality is cables are cheap. USB batteries are cheap and plentiful. I use bluetooth headphones myself and they are really great, in fact it drives me crazy that ipods can't do this (except touch of course but then size is an issue).

I think it would be more fair to say that these items are the differences and potential buyers need to consider that when making their buying decision. It's definitely not the right phone for everyone but that is an impossible standard anyway.

And the people who just hate everything, well if that's what you need to do to live your life, good luck with that...

just because apple does the same thing does not make the two phones on a level playing field. the veer is two-year old design! come on man, they are using the same second-rate pebble design from two years ago that didn't work and are expecting great things to happen now...why? it's a slider Pixi. Is that what they have been working on for all this time? And to engineer the headphone jack OFF of the actual phone and into a magnetic adapter piece? what else? damn the acquisition and all the restructuring but all answers point to yes, palm designed the Veer and they really just couldn't get away from that design. if anything, if rubenstein is running the show, i would blame him for steering the ship in the same direction when the numbers show (and yes, numbers like 1% consumer base DO matter when finding out what works and what doesn't) that something ain't quite right. sure their marketing isn't the best and they had some major blunders. yes their software is amazing on almost all earthly and godly levels. yes their cloud solutions sound wonderful on paper and we have yet to experience pure 'on' -ness. but the fact of the matter is they still do not have a solid industrial design take on what works and what doesn't. they still haven't quite figured out that maybe they need to adjust their dials and try out something more inventive. ok ok, the acquisition, but what about BEFORE the acquisition. what were they working on then? Apple readies devices years in advance and their R&D shows through with products that reak of quality. it is no accident they are the #1 most valuable brand. if almost everyone at hp palm came from apple, then where are the memories of that?

so my question for precentral is...what went wrong? why isnt the veer, even prematurely before release, being well-received by a variety of critics and reviewers? why did HP choose to bank on releasing this very unique phone before the others? why are the materials and technologies chosen for this phone (and future devices) mediocre at best? why didnt someone tell hp and palm that the PRE was a failure?

i don't expect you to know the answers to these, but as true fans of webos and palm, it would be nice to be honest about the phone.

And why is it so hard for you to let others have their own opinions? You sound like an Apple fanboy just straight trollin'...

If they addressed the failures of the Pre, like the slider and such issues, this phone will sell well to people who loved the Centro.

And correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the Centro their most recent SMASH hit of a phone? And wasn't it one of the lower spec'd phones compared to the average phone of its type on the market? I want to go find my old Centro right now and play with it just thinking about how cool it was.

It's actually people like you who will doom this phone, by bad mouthing it through word of mouth.

You make me sick.

because any opinion that amounts to "what's the big deal about the snap-on" is just stupid. it's a big deal and a huge drawback.

i didn't take away from anyone's opinions, i am voicing my own. just you like are voicing your opinion about my opinion. do you see the pattern? everyone is allowed their six feet of space to express themselves. that's how this works.

why are you bringing the Centro up from the grave? can you just move on from that part of Palm (that no longer exists, mind you) and focus on the future of HP? Are you still one of those who uses the Palm classic apps? This is 2011, not the year of the Centro. The Centro was cool for its time, but you have to understand that things change, people move on, and technology will pass you by if you want to sit on the floor by your closet playing Snake on your old phones. It's time to get real about the existence and future of the beloved webos.

I will not doom this phone believe me. There are already plenty of early reviews out there of people voicing the same concerns, and feeling the same way about the how this phone will be received. And if you want a walled garden of only good energy and auras just so this phone doesn't bomb, you should check out iOS. Honest companies that produce great products yield honest results of consumers that respond to those products.

You should get some Pepto.

Actually, no I am not one of those people who use Palm OS apps... never did with the Centro. I have moved on, and I simply brought it up because you seem to think that just because a new phone doesn't have the latest and greatest iPhone, excuse me, industry standard specs, its a horrible P.O.S. Times haven't changed that much, and I know because I am pretty much in the center of the smartphone REAL world where I work, live, and where I am graduating from in a few weeks... Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. When the REAL world realizes that this phone is like a new Centro in a different form factor, with 10x the software the Centro had, it will sell.

So before you go and act like I do not know how the iPhone software works, my wife has an iPod touch. Same thing, without a phone radio. Oh, and she also has a Sprint Pixi, which she cannot live without. Because where Apple seriously lacks, that little thing picks up the slack.

So maybe all those iPod touch lovers out there who just want a simple smartphone at a low price because they don't need anything more will LOVE this phone... especially because Apple refuses to make a phone like it.

Oh, and I don't need Pepto... when I get sick, I **** out turds like you to feel better.

@altalbert Most of the people here who are voicing negative opinions about HP are either customers or former customers. There is a reason they/we are complaining, doesnt that address a much bigger problem? While 400,000 Android devices are activated everyday the few consumers who own a palm device are unhappy. So throw up and get over the fact people may not agree with you!

Oh boo hoo... I have a Sprint Pre-. And it's original since Nov 2009. No replacements except batteries. I treated it with respect since it is an ELECTRONIC device. Just like I would with my laptop and HDTV.

I'm sorry, but if my phone can put up with being overclocked since overclocking just about came out, and be used as heavily as I use it, and last this long, Palm didn't mess everything up.

It's not a Daewoo dude, so stop treating it like one.

The Centro is simply not relevant anymore, and ultimately, wasn't then. To say Lady Gaga is a great musician is to forget that we have Aretha Franklin. Popular and groundbreaking are 2 different things. Groundbreaking was my 180, or my 600. I do see the Veer as a great phone for the world though. I read recently Samsung wants to get the Galaxy S II into 120 countries, I read a post here that says some UK carrier doesn't even want the Pre3.

No no....Ike didn't hit me, I just walked into a door.

wow, you are an angry person.

Whoever said the two phones were on a level playing field other than you?

If the phone and the brand suck so much why are you still here reading and posting about it? Don't buy the thing and move on.. I'm sure many of us here would love for you to do just that. It's not as if your adding anything to the discussion (just busy showing how little you know).

When was the last time you developed and sold anything.... Apple does NOT ready the device years in advance. They work on devices for years but so does everyone else. The new iphone when it arrives will also be a 2 year old design at least.

the person i was replying to said the 'iphone does the same thing.'

i didnt say the phone and the brand suck, you did.

yes the new iphone will still look like the iphone 4 (which is a one-year-old design, not two) but only because they sold millions and millions of iphones, and they have xx% amount of marketshare, and because people go crazy for anything Apple. Do you not see that or are you being naive just to flirt with me?

"I don't get why a custom connector and integrated battery are such a big problem...Iphone does the same thing"

An iPhones are actually popular and you can be just about anywhere on this planet and run into a Wally World and get a new whatever for an iPhone. Try that with a product with very little market traction (Read: DOA) like the Veer.

"An iPhones are actually popular and you can be just about anywhere on this planet and run into a Wally World and get a new whatever for an iPhone."

Not before the first iphone was sold.

Really, that's the best argument you could come up with.....

at the time the iphone was sold, standard connectors weren't... standard.... it was just one of many.. now almost everyone uses the microusb... except apple, which has millions of devices and an ecosystem that HP can only dream of.

I am glad they are using custom connectors. I HATE micro USB because no matter how gentle with the plug it always breaks on me without fail. Why couldn't we have stuck with the more robust mini USB plugs? they worked much better and didn't break on me...

1 thing iphone doesn't do is make the device so small that you have to snap on an external adapter just to be able to plug headphones in. yes, the fact that apple's cable is unique to apple is BS, but it's still a better solution than what HP is inflicting on the Veer.

apple makes a unique connector because they make over US$1 on each connector manufactured (every accessory with the plug in it). It's about profits which you have to respect them for.

The micro USB plug is becoming standard because in the EU it is the designated standard for cellphones. No point making two versions of a phone.

If the snap on plug doesn't work for you then don't buy the phone, it's not much more complicated than that. For others who don't think it's a drawback, like those who use bluetooth headphones then it's not a drawback. This phone is not meant to appeal to everyone. Personally I understand why the design decision was made and they came up with a pretty good fix. I'm sure in time if the phone sells in any decent quantity we'll soon have the micro-usb adapter available through a 3rd party. Frankly all HP would need to do is release the phone worldwide without all the hurdles that Palm created. Lets hope they wise up about the geo-restrictions - Now that's a serious drawback.

There was already the question about preware. +1 on that.

If you get preware please try dr.battery.

I need to know if they have changed the fuel gauge chip or the driver interface.
Thanks

Battery life test and bootup time pls!
when will HP release its phones in Taiwan(or Asia)?

Thank you very much!!

theres a bootup vid on webosroundup compared to a pre 2

Funny thing is that every article on precentral generates more comments than every phone released on ANdroid CEntral, just check out the latest NExus S review.
I think the Veer is a great idea. I like idea of a small form factor phone with the TP.

This is due to the healthy community built up by TreoCentral that PreCentral moderators have done their best to dismantle.

The forums are so stagnant because more and more people are forced to the front pages to speak their mind openly.

Funny thing= 400,000 android devices activated everyday!

Is it possible (for a boxer) to slide-close the Veer with his biceps? : )

Does the Veer have an intro video like the Pre and Pixi do on first use (IE: After a webOS Dr.)?

If so I wanna see it! =P

Hi, Derek.

My questions are:

=> There is some sign about Touch To Share?

=> Have others languages options?

=> ITunes Sync? Yes? No? Maybe?

=> You can use one profile in two devices?

Thanks in advanced. :-)

Best Regards...

Here is the big question... Most people on Precentral are "fanboys" and love WebOS. Which review do we trust, on "Thisismynext.com" Joshua Topolsky totally ripped on the Veer, Laptop Mag the same. Yet the reviews from Precentral and Webosroundup were very positive. Joshua Topolsky said, "Scrolling can be laggy. Sometimes when the phone syncs or brings up a notification, the entire device will freeze". I really don’t have high expectations for the Veer, and it is really an entry level smartphone. However, the pricing does not say it is a entry level phone. I really could care less about the headphone, and usb magnetic cable\dongle. To me I think the magnetic headphone jack is a great idea. Such a common part that often gets damaged. I really don’t know who should be writing the review for this phone. Seems like the targeted audience should review it, whether it is teens, girls, woman, or someone that just wants a full featured smartphone in a really small package. Who knows, HP\Palm might start a trend and we might start to see smaller phones again.

all i can go on is the demo i saw at webosroundup last night... the guy opened like 40 apps and the phone barely lagged...

1. Some people are suggesting this is a great entry level phone for teens. However, teens want what everyone else has. If all their friends have Android or iOS, that is what they will want. They will not want a HP webOS phone if no one else has it. Also, as a corporate focused company, HP does not have the 'cool factor' that is required by teens (except perhaps, Dr Dre and beats audio). So, I dont think this phone will sell well with that segment.

Perhaps, it is aimed at newbies to the smartphone world? But they will most likely buy an LG Optimus S or similar phones. They are probably buying a smartphone because they want apps (or believe apps are important thanks to the marketing) and access to the internet. HP doesnt have apps and most people may consider the screen too small to surf, especially when positioned next to another phone.

So, who is it aimed at?

2. Yes, Apple does have proprietary ports. However, those ports work well for Apple because of the endless number of third party peripherals that you can buy that support the ports.

Will HP license touchstone technology, and will third party manufacturers make accessories for the Veer that add value to the phone?

1. What are the best games for the Veer?

2. Are there any important apps that are available on Pre/Pre2 etc but not on the Veer due to different display resolution?

3. Is there any video out possibilities from the Veer?

4. More camera samples please!

5. More battery life numbers will be appreciated too. For example, try looping a video or try looping a website on Wifi etc.

I have a question. It's about the one infuriating flaw on my Pre 2: the calendar. Has webOS 2.1.2 fixed the unreliable sync with Google Calendar in 2.1? While I'm at it, does it perhaps sync more than two months into the future?

equally as important - does the calendar allow you to ADD RECIPIENTS? Keep in mind this request has been asked since day 1 on the pre -

Now that's an interesting question...Oddly my calendar synch has worked flawlessly while I'm less enthused about how the contacts match up especially things like first name/last name are sorted out and additional information.

I thought the synch problems and limitations were due to google's end.

If I could know one thing it would be WHY OH WHY did't you put this phone onto a CDMA carrier. If it were on Verizon I might have picked it up but it isn't so I won't :(

Will the Veer be able to upgrade to WebOS 3.0 or is it stuck at WebOS 2.1.2?

Wow, some of these comments are remarkable for their vitriol and the pursuit of the mythical "best" gadget. There is no such thing, just personal preferences. It's just a phone. Not worth having lousy interactions with other humans. Yeesh.

I'm appalled that some try to characterize the phone to be targeted at a certain gender or age group without any evidence to support. What gives? In any case, I think I'm done with iPhone's, Pre's, and monster, overgrown androids. I want a capable, small smart phone that first, is a good phone (are you listening Apple? I have never had so many complaints from colleagues about my cell phone), that fits in my front pocket without causing second glances, and that lets me do smartphone things - when I'm not near my computer or my tablet. Basically what I wanted the Pixi to be without the stupid name and a little more capability. And I'm a middle-age guy - not a teeny bopper female. If I can type on the thing, I'm all about this phone, but it doesn't mean I won't have lost affection for those things that are good on iOS or android OS or mobile Windows.....
