HP: We’re doubling down on webOS 12

HP: Doubling Down Our friends over at Engadget were able to get on the horn with Brian Humphries, HP VP of Strategy and Corporate Development, and Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, and they had a pretty positive picture painted for them. According to their chat, HP plans to be “doubling down on webOS,” which Engadget confirmed with Rubinstein, saying “that was the whole point.” webOS is our singular most favorite part of Palm and the part we worried most about with the HP merger. Additionally, Rubinstein and most of the Palm executive staff will be staying on board, so for now it seems like Palm will continue to be Palm, but with the assets of the world’s largest technology company behind them.

So what will HP be doing with Palm and the “prized asset” that is webOS? Engadget was told that they intend to scale the OS “across multiple connected devices.” Tablets, anyone? Additionally, Rubinstein believes that HP wouldn’t be taking Palm and webOS “unless they were willing to make the kind of investment necessary to win.” Considering that HP is currently nowhere near winning in the smartphone marketplace (the lone smartphone OS they use, Windows Mobile 6.5, is due to die a slow painful death), the purchase of Palm isn’t just for IP considerations.

WOW, great news and also glad it went to US based company. Sprint is even looking better lately.

What does doubling down mean?

It's a term from the game of blackjack - a player "doubles down" when they are so confident in the cards they are dealt that they take the opportunity to increase their initial bet by 2x.

awesome news. does this mean we might see the features announced at the developer conference even sooner than the fall?

Best outcome we could have hoped for. Web OS with some better hardware to run it and some bigger $ to market it. Could they want to eventually move WebOS not just to tablets, but to laptops, printers? and more?

This is great news for webOS/Palm. I see HP incorporating webOS into more than phones. I can see HP attempting to do what Apple did with iPhone OS. With the right attention to "eco system" HP will succeed in this market.

I keep raising my hands in the air and yelling yes!!! is this normal?

It must be normal...I'm doing it too.

I would think that this also means Palm can, in the meantime, utilize more of their cash (with HP's blessing) to push projects forward. Then once the merger is complete, HP will pick up the finance reins & put the force of their financial backing behind things. Why? Why, not? HP would be foolish to not go along with letting Palm utilize more of their cash reserves (now that they don't have to try & stretch them out for another 12-18 mos), to gain momentum. One of the criticisms of Palm was that they didn't have the financial reseources to run with the big dogs, thus losing the momentum they had from Jan 2009, but with new devices & advances on other hardware/platforms...that momentum was seen as dwindling. HP wants to compete not just piddly dink along.

Pre2 is coming to Sprint end of 3rd quarter, just in time for the holidays....not a rumor
a little birdie told me,..cough,cough...Palm rep....also confirmed by a higher from Sprint....and I'll just say to all the sell out fools, who jumped ship to that oversized, I can't wear it on my hip so I carry it in my man purse, wish I had actual multi-tasking like I used too...wont be as "snappy" as our future WebOS(2)....i wonder if they'l do another comparison when the HTC doesnt have a 1 year advantage in tech? Ha! Don't worry you can upgrade back to Palm but I don't thing you'l get that discount that Print gives out to LOYAL Cust. LMAO! ;)

I'm sorry your moms never told you.... There is no Santa Clause.

Oversized What?? There we go with that again.. Obviously you have little hands and small pockets. The EVO is the BOMB!! Get over it!! There is nothing it can't do. But I hope you're right... because I eagerly look forward to the newest WebOS Device, and "IF" it does come out as you say... It will be just in time for me to get the PalmPlus that they will replace it with in 8 months because they already got lapped again by HTC. "Haters NEVER win!!"
