Stylus for webOS, Supporting Veterans and more - From the Forums 12

TouchNote has arrived in the Palm catalog with great fanfare and rejoicing, and now PreCentral user digitalelf is trying to use the app for a much greater deed than what might originally have been intended. Since HP has given our community up to 50,000 freely sent postcards with the launch of this app, digitalelf wants to send some postcards to those men and women who have offered their lives for the sake of their country. It's a noble cause that we think deserves a bit more support than it is currently being given.
When the Palm Pilot was introduced in the late 20th Century, it came with a small stylus to interact with the touchscreen. Since then, many devices had started integrating the stylus as well, but as early as a few years ago the styli accessory started to be removed from newer smartphones and PDAs. Recently, though, some devices have started to look at bringing the stylus back, and some users, like japomani, really want to see it added to future webOS devices. Would you ever use a stylus? For some of us, that answer is a big, "No.", but we can't help but think that others feel the same way as japomani - do you?
While we do not condone any sort of illegal distribution of code in the PreCentral forums, and we have never commited any illegal acts ourselves as a webOS-passionate organisation, there are some users wondering why there is so little illegal activitygoing on elsewhere in the world of webOS (distributing webOS SDK's, applications, etc...). We think it's just a matter of having a small and morally-good group of people in our community, even if some comments in that thread might say otherwise. What do you think about the potential for illegal activities in the future?
Everyone dreams of someday winning the lottery, and that includes our beloved webOS community. What makes our group awesome, however, is the fact that some are actually wondering how they would support Palm if they were to ever win the lottery. Some ideas are a little... short-sighted. But there are some others that seem well thought out, so we'd love to see someone in our small group win the lottery (and we bet HP would like to see that too).

WebOS certainly has the most awesome user base out there right now. Most people who use android and iphone don't really care how each other is doing as far as experiences on the OS.
I have received more help on this site with WebOS, than anywhere else about anything haha.
Now we just need to get the size of our user base to grow and we'll take over the mobile world soon enough.
P.S talked 2 girls into buying Pre2s over the iphuck4. The salesman had no idea about WebOS. He just kept pushing them to buy an iphone. I'm pretty sure he's gonna switch over to WebOS after my intensive training session. Haha sales reps make me laugh.
Hey Tim, thanks for bringing the pen input to the forefront, I really want to see this happen
"some are actually wondering how they would support Palm if they were to ever win the lottery"
I supported Palm when I bought my Pre-. They rewarded my support with not updating webOS to 2.x on my Pre-. I am still waiting for Palm to "make it right".
The next moves is Palm's.
Hi everyone,
OK here is my take on a stylus...
I want all webOS phones and pads to include one...not necessarily for a stylus itself, but because you would have a pen handy.
I have been using a stylus that is also a pen, that fits into the Centro stylus silo, I also use done on my Treo 300, 600 & 650, (they were all purchased from the store on this very site).
I will miss having a pen handy at all times.
After all sometimes you do need a pen and not a PDA!
Take care, Jay
I think a stylus is a natural extension of a tablet computing device's feature set. As a leader in mobile computing, HP should find a way to integrate this functionality into future versions of webOS. If they don't, competitors will and introduce groundbreaking apps that will utilize this techonology at the same time, making us webOS fans wish that our horse had finished first. IF HP wants to change perception through innovation, it's time for them to start. TTS, webOS 3.0 and exhibition are an awesome beginning but they need to keep up the pressure. The webOS community will grow if they continue to innovate and change the digital world.
I think stylus is still useful especially drawing or even jotting notes. Technically I think styli could be used with future capacitive screens. I think I saw similar article on engadget.

Stylus would be great with a Touchpad.
The touchpad could be used to take notes at college, to annotate PDFs or powerpoint just as the tablet PC do, etc.
It'd be a handy tool. Is it do-able with a multi-touch screen?
Why so little illegal activity? Because it's not necessary. WebOS is wide open to end users and homebrew developers. The SDK is free. There is really nothing to be gained through illegal activity. That's what happens when you have a company smart enough to embrace and empower the community instead of fighting them every step of the way.
HPalm may not be fighting us but they're not exactly helping us either. They might of had the foresight to create an open O/S and in principle have empowered the community. But in their apathy they have left us to fend for ourselves and now the only way one can now get support, updates and enhancements is now via homebrew community.
WebOS's openness has become a crutch for HPalm where they now expect the homebrew community to do the work they are no longer willing (or able) to do and have abandoned their users (including even the non-technically savvy) to depend on unsupported Unix script hacks to update their phones.
Apple might be hegemonic micro-managers about their cherished iOS but it would nice if HPalm cared enough to not be the non-alimony paying, absent, divorced, only infatuated with the new step-children sort of father that its now become either. Being abandoned and tossed to the streets might force one to become stronger but I wouldn't exactly call this empowerment either.
Point taken, but what does that have to do with the "illegal activity" part? I like open source software. I run Linux Mint on my desktop at home. However, I think the entitled attitude that every company is obligated to provide open source software is laughable. Frankly, I'd choose HP's brand of openness (open to ME) than Android's brand of openness (open to manufaturers but locked down to end users by the manufacturers) any day. Is homebrew a crutch for HP? Perhaps. But it's a damned good crutch to have.
I still have an original modded xbox in operation at home. Why? One word: homebrew. Very few things add more value to a device than an active homebrew community.
Are people seriously discussing how much money they would sink into WebOS if they won the lottery?
I'm sorry but that's one of the saddest things I've seen on this site in a long time.
hey wow, 2 threads of mine got on this, I guess I was having a good week. lol.
What's wrong with wanting to give a little money back to the community if you won the lotto.? and since Tim put my theads on the main page, I'll buy him a touchpad on friday when I win 50 million, muahahahahahahah
