iPhone 3.0 : Should Palm Worry? 21

by Jennifer Chappell Mon, 23 Mar 2009 9:02 pm EDT

A week ago, Dieter talked about Apple announcing their iPhone 3.0 on the day of the first Sprint/Palm Webinar.  There were rumored "Palm Pre features" mentioned by Digg's Kevin Rose. Well, iPhone 3.0 did get Spotlight, a system-wide iPhone search.

If you're interested in all the other new features being brought to the iPhone in 3.0, take a look at our sister site The iPhone Blog's excellent iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 1 Software Walkthrough.  Our Pal Rene does a wonderful job of explaining what has and hasn't changed with iPhone 3.0.  TiPB also has a great Apple iPhone 3.0 Massive News Roundup that is worth reading.

There's an interesting thread in our forums too that you'll want to check out: iPhone 3.0 vs Pre.

So, what do you think about iPhone 3.0?  Should Palm be worried, or do they have enough goodies covered in the Pre?

As long as the iPhone is still adding BASIC features found in every other smartphone, Palm should not worry. The Pre is available on the network that tied for number one. The iPhone is on the network that came in last.

As usual, Apple will spend astronomical amounts of money to market around their product's many deficiencies. Apple is all about the flash -- Oops! Apple does not support Flash, but the Pre does...

I don't think Palm is gonna try to catch Apple with the Pre. Palm first of all needs to dig itself out of a financial hole with the Pre. After that, if the device is a hit (and it will be :-)) and they have a little money to play with, release other devices with the new WebOS to stay competitive in the smartphone market. It would take years and multiple phone carriers (Sprint, Verizon, ATT) to catch the iPhone.
