Jon Rubinstein's company email about acquisition 31
As a part of Palm's just-mentioned SEC filing, there's a copy of the email Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein sent out to all employees. Looks like they are going to have an all-hands-on meeting with employees to discuss the acquisition.
The letter goes over the basics: HP's resources, Palm's innovation, and a focus on keeping the pace up now and in the future - in other words, Palm's not going to go on autopilot while they wait for the acquisition to shake out. Good to see Rubinstein praising the work that Palm has already done "In short, we have delivered on our original plan," and also good to see that there's not much in the way of dark clouds in Rubinstein's message to the team:
I am very excited about the potential of this merger (and not only because I started my career there). HP recognizes the value in our platform, our IP and our people, and that is all a result of your hard work
The filing also includes 'talking points' detailing that there was "a high level of interest [...] from other serious buyers" and that "it should be business as usual at Palm" during the integration process.
Full letter after the break
Team,
Over the past two years, we have made remarkable progress transforming Palm. We returned to our innovative roots and delivered some of the best mobile experiences on the market. Today, we are taking a huge step forward in accelerating that strategy with the announcement of a merger with HP.
I am very excited about the potential of this merger (and not only because I started my career there). HP recognizes the value in our platform, our IP and our people, and that is all a result of your hard work. In a very short period of time, we amassed a world-class team, brought webOS to market with widespread acclaim, launched four new devices, and launched in eight countries. In short, we have delivered on our original plan.
HP is a world-class company which brings the extensive resources necessary to scale the Palm webOS platform. Together, Palm and HP share a history of innovation and technology leadership, and I look forward to working with them to accelerate the development and adoption of Palm webOS.
There are many decisions to be made and questions to be answered in the coming months as we turn to completing a successful integration. During this process, we must remain laser focused on our priorities––increasing sell through and customer satisfaction, and continuing to work on our innovative product roadmap.
I’m sure you’d like to hear more about this announcement, and perhaps ask some questions, so please join me in the multi-purpose room at 5:00 p.m. today for an all hands meeting. For those of you not located in Sunnyvale, we will provide a dial-in number in the meeting invitation.
One last public service announcement––as you might expect, this development may generate considerable interest from the media and shareholder community. [...]
Thanks again for all your hard work, and go Palm and HP!!
jon

Mixed feelings: HP is solid world class, but Palm kept the focus on Palm.
We love you Rubi!
Makes you wonder, that Rubi was actually planning for something like this. If Palm 2.0 successfully boomed (which it unfortunatly didn't) Thats where Rubi wanted to go, but also knew that they could bring the IP of webOS up to scale that somebody would end up buying them. Maybe it was a hushed back-up plan.
Now I would be happy if I received this email. Go Palm and webOS
generally we just use the term "all hands" meeting, not "all-hands-on".
This is great for Palm and HP. HP needed a great mobile os to compete with Google, Apple and RIM. Palm needed a increase in funds. It's a win for both companies. Developers will be more inclinded to build apps for webos now. WebOS is the best OS period. With the finances of HP, better hsrdware this summer and better marketing, iphone will have competition. I hope to see WebOS blossom.
Well said and great points
exactly how I feel about.
Great news for both: Palm and HP.
Hey DataViz, how's that Docs2Go coming now? Pwned.
Well played, Nick. ;)
I'm all for WebOS pushing forward, but how exactly is DataViz getting Pwned?
Palm still needs to get more handsets into more hands. And quite frankly, they have very little time to do it in. This buyout sounds like what Palm needed, but until it produces sometime, Palm is still barely treading water.
As it stands, I'll likely get an Android device come Summer. And hope I can still use WebOS in the form of a tablet
You realize that being brought into HP means that Palm now how the ability to compete with the specs/production of companies like htc and Apple right? How about the fact that HP provides the infrastructure to 8 of the largest phone companies in the world? This is poised to become a huge force in the industry, especially with the looming lawsuits against android.
Regardless of what they really were planning on, this is great for all of us. We are now ensured that webos will continue to grow as a product for a long time coming!
Love it!!! as long as HP will keep WebOS up and running for the next devices.

HP doesn't look so big through that filter.

Now with HP backing (cash, cash, cash) it will be easy to market Palm products and show their advantage against Apple.

Wow and thanks for the heads-up....didn't know that HP was that big. Yikes that is fantastic and scary on what they could accomplish. Sorli...
Wow and thanks for the heads-up....didn't know that HP was that big. Yikes that is fantastic and scary at the same time. Just think what they can accomplish working together...I'm hopeful and excited. Sorli...
Believe it or not - Wolfram Alpha's figures are wrong. Last fall, Apple revised all of income statements for 2007 to 2009. Wolfram Alpha does not reflect the updated data. In the most recent 12 months (Apr 2009 to Mar 2010), Apple had a revenue of $51.1 billion.
Of course, HP is still bigger than those $50 billion, but how much of HP's business is rivalling Apple's? This is what HP's business breaks down to:
$50 billion Enterprise Business
$35 billion PCs
$25 billion Printers
I would argue that HP's enterprise muscle will not help Palm at all in the consumer space, where Apple is at home. It might help Palm in the corporate world. It would be absolutely stunning and awesome if HP could tie WebOS into all of their wide range of products, but that would take 5 years or more.
Okay, so it's Apple's $51 billion versus HP's $115 billion.
The point is, the new Palm/HP will now expand their product lines and worldwide markets.
Don't forget about the new ability to buy cheaper smartphone components used to build their phones considering HP's purchasing power = improved profits margins
Absolutely love this! HP gives the "big company" legitimacy that Palm was lacking. Also, gives the developers confidence to stay in for the long haul, and the consumers who might have been hedging to make the jump. Hit the ground running with this, HP!!!
I have been a member for almost a year and have not commented. I could not resist. I have been waiting for the shoue to drop. It has and I'm so happy for Palm and WebOS. I COULDN't see going backward after experincing OS. I NEEDED SOME THING LIKE THE IPAD BUT COULD NOT see it after the experience that I have gotten from my pre. Can't wait for the HP/Palm PAD..... And new phone hardware. ;-)
Time to start developing for WebOS!! now that they have cash its awesome!
Time to review the list of things Pre users wanted improved on the smartphone and let HP directly hear from their newly acquired WebOS smartphone users. For a start hardware improvements like keyboard, memory, battery life, etc. Addressing these would be a big step forward and improve Palm's competitve position provided they were complemented by an aggressive, well capitalized marketing plan.
what happen to all of those that wanted to jump ship to the htc evo. where are you all now!!!!!!
+1!
Actually, I'm still getting an Evo. I love WebOS and I love my Pre, but Palm needs new hardware NOW, not later. I'm at my 3rd Pre already and the Pre works best with the overclocking hack (awesome btw!). If no announcement is made before Evo's release, they're gonna have to wait at least a year for me and I bet I'm not the only one.
I'm with you on getting an Evo this summer, but will be watching for new webOS hardware announcements. If the right hardware comes along I'd easily jump back to a webOS device.
umm we are all at android central hahaha. Can sumone say pwned??
Didn't you mean precentral? Then why are you here?!
I am soo glad that WebOS is going to continue, Over the last few months I have had friends (apple koolade drinkers) give me so much crap about my sinking ship OS. Now I can look @ them and say, see I told you we aren't going any where!! I have been a Palm supporter for many years, and as many have said once you navigate through the OS, no other OS feels right. So HP/Palm lets show the world what we can do. Ahh Apple, excuse me I think its my turn to stand on top.
