Just Type: Add website searches 9

by Adam Marks Mon, 16 May 2011 10:38 am EDT

This tip is only for devices running webOS 2.0 and higher

If a website uses the Open Search protocol for searches, you can actually add it to the "Launch and Search" section of Just Type. Whenever you visit a site with this search protocol, a dashboard notification will appear with the name of the site and a message indicating that you can "Tap to add as Search Engine".

If you tap that dashboard, you will be brought to the "Add More Searches" screen within Just Type Preferences, with the website you just visited within the "RECENTLY VISITED SEARCH ENGINES" section.  Just as you would add any other item to your Just Type options, all you need to do is tap on the website to add it to the "Launch & Search" section of Just Type.

If you dismissed that original notification, don't worry! You can still add the website to Just Type at any point in the future.  All you need to do is follow the directions to Add an item to Just Type by loading up the Just Type Preferences screen and selecting "+ Add More Searches". Scroll down to the bottom of that page to find all your recently viewed websites and as described above, just tap on the site you want to add to Just Type.

I'd like to know what percentage of people on precentral even run webos 2.x.
Aren't the only devices out right now that run 2.x the pre 2 and the veer?
I'm still running 1.4.5 (never even got the 1.4.5.1 upgrade)

Indeed. Still on sprint here. Tired of hearing about all of the things my phone can't do.

My Pre- running WebOS 2.1 became better than my iPad for IMDB searches as soon as I added the IMDB search engine to my just type list. Just type > dedicated app :D (at least in terms of finding info quickly).

How did you get webOs 2.1 on your pre minus?
Was it easy?
Does everything work as expected?

I'd love to do this to hold me over until the pre 3 or a slate phone is out, but I don't have a land line and this is my only phone, so this might be risky for me.

If you have some technical know-how and can follow directions it isn't too bad. I have 2.1.0 on my Sprint Pre (Plus) and I think its so worth it to be able to partake in all this newness!

It is too risky for me. I have overclocked my phone, added some home brew & patches, am helping some beta test their apps, but I read the 1st few steps of this (from the forums) and some of the problems & how many times people had to "doctor" their phone & I decided I would wait for my next webOS phone.

Some do it just fine & I don't want to discourage you. It is in the forums. Just saying it seemed too much for me to risk w/o a backup phone.

It took some time, I decided to back up all my data so that I could wipe my palm profile to eliminate as many potential problems as possible (took some time to migrate my notes from the Pre's "memo" app to Evernote, which I'm better off for, and made sure my contacts with synced with Google).

I only ran into one snag-- the phone wouldn't activate on Sprint's network under 2.1. I had to doctor to 1.4.5, activate, and then doctor to 2.1, from there everything has been great. (this was because I did this to a second-hand Pre- that I bought on eBay for $20. If I'd had the courage to do the update to my original Pre, activation probably would have been an non-issue). It's certainly made the wait for a new HP / WebOS device on Sprint much more bearable.

I 2.0'd my Pre- without any hassle. It's not flawless (Overclocking is a MUST) but it is really good. Just Type alone is spectacular and I love exhibition mode, it's like having a miniature digital picture frame at my desk.

I just wish I could get facebook to stop asking me to add it to the Just Type search.

It's lame that I can add Facebook, Precentral, Youtube, wikipedia, and who knows how many other sites to search and type but I can't add a different search engine like Bing or Yahoo. I understand Google being preloaded but it shouldn't be locked in and require a yet to be built (per my knowledge) patch to do add it.
