Keyboard Issues with Palm Pre Plus? 106
I've noticed an odd issue with my Palm Pre Plus on Verizon - sometimes letters seem to double-enter and other letters drop entirely. I had been chalking it up to fact that I've been switching between software and hardware keyboards so often lately that I'm not as proficient as I once was.
However, it seems I'm not the only one having the issue. Diesel Donkey gave us the heads-up to this forum thread and poll investigating these keyboard jitters and it looks to us like there are enough people experiencing text entry issues on the Palm Pre Plus to bring it up here on the blog.
Verizon Palm Pre Plus users - are you seeing double letters, dropped letters, or general lag when typing on the keyboard? Go on and vote one way or the other in the poll.

woohoo, score one for the palm pre (non-plus). that's a total of 1 now, darn.
Kind of what I was thinking, although mine was more like "Welcome to the crap hardware club plus."
yeah.
While it's great that we don't have this specific problem, we still have to deal with god awful oreo and other issues.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY PRE PLUS, MAJOR REASON FOR RETURNING TO SPRINT
No offense, but if you had a Pre Plus, why return it to Sprint? :-S
Hmmm, I remember having issues like that on my old Treo's (700wx & 800wx). Also, about three weeks ago my Sprint Pre (Launch version) started putting in two spaces on occasion when I pressed the space key...
lol my initial thoughts too! "Woohoo! My Pre's keyboard is better!" ;)
Don't forget (non plus) has better commercials... and apparently now our keyboards work... woo :/
i've been having this issue with my Sprint Pre but only recently, must have come with the latest update, i can hit a key for a split second and end up with several multiples. it's quite frustrating!
I've had the same problem with my Sptint Pre as well.
me too
Ditto for my Sprint Pre, I've been waiting for others to confirm I'm not the only one seeing this issue. I believe it started happening right after I patched, but I cannot remember if it was the most recent 1.3.5.1 patch or an earlier one. I wish they would go back to the original settings, it was much easier to type then. And the double space is the most common error.
I have a sprint pre and also recently noticed the same problems.. (it's happened while typing this as well)... It's usually multiple spaces, I just assumed I was being clumsy.
I have a sprint pre and I only usually have a problem with the space button. I sometimes either don't get one or get too many.
same issue here on Sprint Pre with letter i since day one.
Yeah that happens with me as well. It seems to be specific keys too, though I don't really keep track. I notice I'm double-entering the w and maybe the r quite often.
Yeah, but for Sprint users having this problem: When did you get your Pre?
Only had mine two or three months and haven't had this problem (yet).
I got one the day they came out. And I don't seem to remember having this problem until maybe a few months ago. And it's really subtle, so I don't really have a very well defined start period.
Nnno prblms herre.
Hilarious. Just had to mention that.
I just exchanged my Pre for another because of this exact issue. It was really bad for me, some letters would duplicate every single time and frequently others wouldn't register taps at all.
The new phone I have received doesn't seem to be doing it (at least not as frequently), but it has a loose slider hinge. Palm really dropped the ball on the quality of the hardware on these phones, which is sad because I really love the OS.
I suspect this is actually more of a software issue. When you hold down a key, it repeats, so it's almost like some kind of lag where the OS registers that you're holding down a key (too sensitive) or misses a press entirely.
Haha true...but that's 2 points for us jonyah: (+1 pt) for having the Pre first and (+1 pt) for not having keyboard issues =) I've had my Pre since July 09 and I haven't had any keyboard problems. This is my 2nd Pre, but it was due to an EV glitche on my 1st so no biggie. Can't wait for webOS 1.4 and whatever Palm/Sprint has in store for us in the future!!!
Every palm pre plus I've had has had this severely, like my first, or mildly, my third. Still on the third. Hope it's my last.
Not just a Verizon Pre issue. Happens on my Sprint Pre all the time
I see the double letters rarely and only if I'm typing slow. If I'm flying through keys it doesn't happen (though spelling errors happen... better self-correction plz Palm). I think because the keys are clickier it causes it to double if you hold it for anything longer than a second. As for everything else, my Plus is solid. One thing I did notice: if you're in the dark you can see almost what looks like scratches around the edges of the screen underneath the hull, as if the screen is "sinking" into the phone because the screen itself isn't just the whole screen. ... bah, it's hard to explain. The original Pre had it worse.
Cann yu heear mee nw?
LMAO. Good one!!
.........LMFAO!
That is funny...
I'm on my third Pre Plus and this is the first one that hasn't had the double letter issue (knocking on wood). The keyboard seems much more solid than the previous two. I think this is hardware related. I'm thinking the one I currently have is a newer model.
I'm just hoping my current device doesn't fail and I can hang onto it for more than a few weeks.
Build QUALITY (TM)
I love the keyboard!! Maybe I am the wrong guy to state an opinion...I am coming from the BB storm so everything will be good to me!! All seriousness love the keyboard!!!
I only have a regular Palm Pre from Sprint but my space bar double enters a space about half the time. It started doing this only in the last couple weeks. I chalked it up to the fact that I drop the damned thing all the time because it's so slippery. I sure could use a touchstone back. But I don't know if dropping it is really the reason it's doing it. With this post, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps it's the phone itself. Haha. Who knows?
update: I just saw that other regular Pre users are having this issue and only in the last few weeks. I'm going to guess it's a software issue.
Glad to see the issue raised. Enough people are having the problem that it needs to be addressed. Wondering if its HW or SW.
I just spent an hour on the phone with palm (multiple calls) did a webos doctor reload, still exact same problem. Letter H is the worst.
They said take it back to VZW store, but this is my third one, so they said, ok send it in to palm for repair. we'll see what they come up with.
Yep. Got the repeating letters issue, though not that bad (happens maybe 3-4x/day with heavy texting and tweeting). I have already put a screen cover on it (I am picky so it takes a while to get it applied just right!), and have insurance on the phone. I am going to ride it out until it is unbearable. Hopefully by then nagging hardware issues will be resolved and I will need a new screen cover anyway...LOL
I am with Sprint, but I am having MAJOR problems with my keyboard right now... Though when you go test it, they work fine, but MMS, web pages, things within programs are all messed up with typing. I even doctored my phone to no avail...
I have had 3 Pre's(Sprint) One of them did have this issue with the letter "e".
Sounds like Sprint sold you the one I returned! You must be in Portland, Oregon! =) I bought a Pre at the Sprint store in the Lloyd Center area and returned it the next day because of a shotty 'e' key. Wait, are Sprint employees passing off defective returned phones as new items to customers?
I'm a Palm Pre non-Plus user and the only double entry I experience is with the space bar.
I have posted on the other thread, but I will add my experience here as well. My Pre+ did the double and triple strike from day one. I thought it was just me at first, but it started to get worse. The most frustrating thing was that the backspace key was doing it too and this made for an impossible time correcting the mistakes. I am now on my second Pre+ and do not have the problem. The keyboard feels different. I am liking the phone better now. I am sad that I lost so much data when they did the transfer to the new phone.
An interesting note: There was a representative from Palm at Verizon when my DH went to exchange the phone for me. He told DH that he had not heard of the keyboard problem in the Pre+.
i have never seen this issue on the pre before. ive seen more problems with the power button not working properly or at all
I get the same issues on my Sprint Palm Pre purchased in December. Text enty is a little flakey. Some times I press a key and it does not register on screen. I wait and then press again and I get 2 of the same characters. It feels like a SW issue.
I've noticed the double entry issue - purchased a Pre Plus about 1 month ago.
Being a Sprint Pre owner I only recently (before the switch) had the issue with my spacebar. Now with my Pre+ I've been having the exact same issue on 2 different handsets. I started a formal thread on the Palm Tech Support site but I'm glad to see it up here on the front page though. Despite my incessant bothering of Verizon, they all claim it is not a currently recognized problem.
Thanks to Dieter for pushing this to the front page! Here's to hoping this issue gets resolved soon.
On my Sprint Pre, I have not had this issue. Typing has been very precise. The keyboard did have the "crunchy" typing for awhile, but then I switched to the glove case and the issue went away. Is it just me, or am I hearing more problems with the supposedly improved Pre that Verizon is toting?
I'm having the same issues but I'm fairly convinced this is a software bug. I typed out an essay-length message on x.facebook.com & neither of these things happened once, but immediately after switching to texting it acted up again. I dunno why it would only be affecting certain pre's tho if it was a soft-bug.
I have also been having this issue with my Sprint Pre. And like someone else mentioned, I didn't start seeing the problem until the most recent build was installed. I use my Pre keyboard quite a bit, so I would have noticed this earlier if it had been a problem for a long time.
FWIW, I got my Pre in September.
I have the same problem on my Pre Plus. I seem to get is more if I am typing with fingernails than with finger tips.
on my 2nd pre never had a keyboard issue. I drop it alot also, and one time I forgot it on the roof of my car and drove off with it and I didn't notice till I made a turn and it slid off the car. It was in one of those $14 cases you get from the sprint store, it saved the phone, just got some dings on the housing, screen is in mint condition, (lost the case though) and no keyboard problems, no problems at all! And who says palm makes a flimsey phone?
My sister-in-law has the Palm Pre Plus and hers is doing it.
Thank you for posting this! My Pre Plus is a week old and I've noticed all these problems (mostly double-typing, some missed typing, and a lag occasionally) frequently enough to be worried. It's very frustrating when I'm trying to type, especially passwords or URLs. I'll talk to Verizon about exchanging it.

..... So can I blame the pencil for missspelling words too? Lol kidding. I haven't had a problem with any of the keyboards typing double.
Sprint pre, my spelling mistakes are my fault and I'm fine with that, hoping we don't get the smart correction or whatever it's called.
Have friends with hero, droid nexus1 and have to call to ask what they meant by their texts. It always seems to be jibberish! Lol @ least when I miss-spell things it's still fanetical lol
I have a first day pre and have to say I have never had any problem with anything other than an occasional headset jack issue and have dropped the thing onto concrete several times. I feel like it is one of the best quality builds I've had on a phone ever. I do see an occasional software based lag at times when typing but no issues otherwise... Am I just that lucky with my phone or just not as critical with minor issues? It seems like only a few of us have good phones if you read the comments and forums but everyone I see in real life loves their pre. Are faulty pre's that common or do a few people just have to find something to complain about? Not trying to be inflammatory... Just commenting and wondering.
TRY THESE STEPS TO FIX THE ISSUE...
I had the same problem. Multiple and missed letters in every sentance. It was so frustrating having to back on every sentance and enter a letter or back space and make corrections. If your a heavy email and text user like myself then I know how frustrated you are getting.
I read in one of the precentral forums giving these steps saying that it fixed his/her issue. I can now say that it fixed my issue too.
Here you go...
1) Powe off your Pre
2) Hard press all the keys with your thumb about 10 times
3) Hard press each key individually fast 15 times
4) Power up your pre
If this doesn't fix the issue then maybe you need to get yours replaced. This fixed my issue and I was experiencing this it really bad. Thanks to suck a great forum of users issues can get resolved.
Nice, thanks. I don't get the repeating letters anymore.
I was VERY skeptical about this but I tried it anyway because my "L" and "P" buttons were REALLY annoying me. Sure enough - it seems to have worked. Haven't had a problem in a few hours. Thumbs up!
I have to say when I read this suggestion, it sounded like a joke. Nevertheless, I gave it a shot and it's helped quite a bit. My F, K, and backspace (especially bad problem to have!) keys were doing the double-press or missed-press thing with annoying frequency. When I did this procedure the first time, those keys were fixed. My R key still double-pressed occasionally, so I did PDAGeek's procedure again and the R key seems to be fixed.
I found a good way to test whether the keys responded correctly was to start a new memo, then alternately type a key and the space bar. That way, if it came out "f f f f f f f f f f f f f..." the F key was working; if there was a " ff " or a " " (two spaces in a row) then it was still bad. Thanks to Palm's assumption that "r" should be replaced with "are," it was especially easy to see if R was double-pressed: it would come out as "rr" instead of "are."
Let's hope this permanently resolves the problem. I had been planning on waiting for webOS 1.4 to come out to see if that fixed this problem in software.
Update: unfortunately, the double-key issue has returned today. So this hasn't provide a permanent fix for me.
Crazy, but the key press/power off ploy seems to work at least at first. I ordered a new phone today before I tried it. I am on Verizon and beyond my 30 days, and they ordered a new phone without even looking at mine when I described the problem and there was no mention of the 30 day time expiration(does this mean there is an alert on Verizon about this issue?). Anyway, if my new phone feels different and works better, I will post to let you know. I love the OS, but the keyboard almost made me turn in my phone for another brand until I saw this thread about others having the same problem.
Can anyone replace my rear speaker? blown 3rd time. argghh.
my Palm Pre (Sprint, non-plus) double types very often. Its been happening since about 2 months ago. I've had it since August 2009. Used to have skipped letters as well but that's rare.
Sprint Pre here (since August 2009). Never any keyboard problems. Maybe Ver. 1.4 will fix this issue. Isn't it supposed to solve all of the world's problems?
This issue is happening to me also. Verizon Pre Plus purchased the last week of January. It occurs mostly with text messaging but has happened while writing emails too. The letter "Y" is most at fault and when I KNOW I'm hitting the "Y", I'd say 30% of the time it just doesn't register and sometimes it totally sticks and I get a whole lot of "Y's" automatically entering quickly. I'm guessing that it's a hardware issue and has something to do with a design or finishing/assembly flaw with the molding of the entire keyboard letters/ "pad" and/or the holes/plate that it fits into.
Also, and unrelated to the keyboard,...twice now I've experienced my pre not recognizing when it's (properly) installed on the touchstone. No tone sounds and the clock and padlock icon doesn't show. I did a power-down and back on and that solved the problem both times.
I sure hope that Palm comes out with a better hardware platform. Since June 6 I am now on my 5th phone. On June 7, despite being absolutely in love with both my Pre and WebOS, if a reliable phone doesn't appear from Palm I jump ship to Android.
P.S. My keyboard is working fine.

Why are Sprint Palm Pre users bitter toward Verizon Pre Plus users? If anything, their marketing it giving us a shot at longevity with WebOS.
Seriously who the hell does palm use to manufacture there phones, Serious lack of quality control... i know there made in china... but every other smart phone providers (i.e google, apple, nokia) get there phones made in china only they seem to have very few hardware issues, if any. I change my phone 4 times same problem screen stress cracks... If it wasn't for Webos I would of bailed on palm long time ago!!!
I had this issue on my pre it was kind of annoying. That Pre died and my new one doesn't have the multiple text entry or double spacing.
I'm having major keyboard issues with double typing. Other than that I LOVE my new phone. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that 1.4 solves the problem and hoping it comes out before my 30 day period ends...
Yeah, I'm having keyboard issues as well. I took someone's advice and trned the phone off and mashed all the keys down for a while. As you can see from tis post, there are a few mistakes, but not too many. I'm actually frustrated at the lack of mistakes. Maybe depressing the keys for a while actually works :-)
If you are experiencing these issues, post here.

They won't fix it unless enough of their users complain about it!
i 'vve had thosees probblems since launch. I need to read everything I write twice cause of this problem. I am wrting this through my pre and you can see all the repetitions. Also I have problems with the 'i' keys most of the time I have to press it twiice before it actually gets recognized by the system.
I have had all of the described keyboard problems on occasion. It doen't happen all of the time, but it does happen frequently.
this might be a bit off topic but perhaps not. Has anyone else had some strange distortion on their screen when wearing sunglasses? It looks like the screen isn't flat under the touchable part if that makes sense. Quite a rainbow on a white screen lol
Yeah - the problem you are experiencing is because you are probably wearing polarized sunglasses...the physics of the polarized glasses combined with the technology behind certain types of LCD screens manifests into what appears to be distortion on the screen. My Pre has what appears to look like "black grease" on it when I wear my polarized sunglasses. If it is really bothersome to you get a pair of unpolarized glasses.
I have never had this issue with the three Sprint Pre's ive had.
I've had my pre since launch date on Sprint and I haven't experience any keyboard issues.
There are a lot of discussions ongoing related to this:

I have a day 1 phone on Bell. My keyboard in the last 2 days died. It started with sticking keys but now the orange key and half the keys on the 2nd last row are dead including v,z, and n (ironic.) Bell's replacing it under warrenty but ironic this pops up when mine dies.
my sprint pre does the double/triple space. Bought in July 2009. Noticed this in last few weeks +/-.
I'm a Sprint user; bought my Pre 5 days after launch. About a month ago, maybe 6 wks, I began getting double or triple spaces when I hit the spacebar. It really strikes me as a hardware thing. I find it a little disconcerting because, when I use the Pre to reply to or compose email, I want it to appear professional. That means I have to keep an eye out for the double spaces so that I can go back and delete them.
Still loving the Pre. Don't know of any device that is perfect, especially if you're an early adopter. Especially love webOS and the continual improvements we receive OTA.
my wife's verizon palm pre plus has this problem with the sticking keys since we bought it a month ago. mine has other issues but not this one.
All I know is with all the price drops for both Sprint and Verizon, it tells me one thing. The phones are just not moving off the shelf like Palm expected. As a business major price drops means two things. #1 you can't sell your item. #2 Your item has peaked and you can't sell your item. Either way to drop a phone that much in price in less than 30 days is sure signs of disaster.
I hate to say it that way, but there is no other answer for it.
We have 3 Sprint launch day pre's in our family and have never had a keyboard issue with any of them.
This is where people who do not own the Palm Pre Plus will claim to have it and claim to be experiencing the same problem. Oh well!
Was it not at PreCentral where a survey showed over four times as many problems as Sprint was experiencing for another issue? And Sprint's response was that it was nothing usual - and similar to any manufacturer - and PreCentral's survey was over 400% off! I know this is not PreCentral's fault, but the "trolls" that hang around here.
Wow, over 60% of Pre Plus owners in the poll reporting at
least the double letter problem (something I have *never*
seen on my Sprint Pre). Ouch.
This is not a scientific poll! It is not even a poll.
In addition, there is no verification that "all" or "most" of those commenting own the Pre. A previous (but actual) poll given on another issue showed that 75% of the result was false - as reported by Sprint. That is, most of the people who said they had a problem did not have any. Go figure!
What do you mean "it's not even a poll"?
Did you follow the link to the poll in the article?
As of right now over 200 people report all 3 problems, 85 report 2 problems and 38 report 1 problem.
That last problem which is common to all three groups
is something that no Sprint Pre customers have ever
reported before and nobody is reporting now.
It may not be a "scientific poll" as it's not a true random
sampling but the raw number of people affected speaks volumes
and I doubt very much that over 300 people are just
making this up out of thin air.
This solved my problem. Thank you PDAGeek!!!

I have the same problem with the keyboard and the screen changing brightness on its own is pretty annoying too.
I've had my Pre from Sprint for about 2 months now and have had no problems so far.
I know that recently I suddenly noticed the double space entry in text messages, but chalked it off as me and my habit of being 27 thoughts ahead of what I'm currently writing which causes weird grammatical results. Plus my Asus G71GX laptop has a dbl keystroke issue as well so I just added it to my long list of unique and interesting superpowers in my repertoire.
pre plus here , no double typing problems so far.
Hey pre plus owners, I've had the very frustrating experience of both the no letter and double letter problems and powering down, pressing buttons hard & quickly, and restarting has made a world of difference. Typing on my pre now and wow. I'm starting to like txting again!
I have been frustrated with the text entering. Doubling, missing, and trying to put in a password has been impossible because nothing is dependable. I tried the 15 all thumbs and individual key X's 15 times and so far so good. I really miss the navigation wheel to move around and correct typos. Does any one have an easy way to correct typo's. My thumbs are big, and sometimes I hit the send button while trying to hit the location to correct. Treo 700P was much easier, but BB Storm 2 was impossible.
Just switched my 3 week old Pre Plus for a new one because of multiple letters and dropped letters. I was within the 30 day period, so I got a brand new one right out of the box. Keyboard is fine now. If your 30 days are not up, trade for a new one. Since this fixed my issue, I'm thinking hardware related?

My keyboard issues have come back - the fix noted in the above comment is only a temporary fix.
I had this exact problem with my first Palm Pre Plus from Verizon. I never had this problem from Sprint, I just had the typical mushy crappy keyboard feeling from the Sprint model, so I decided to move to Verizon.
I noticed the doubling right away in 1.3.5.1 and the way it "felt" it felt as if a software issue. So after 1.4.0 rolled out and I gave it time and tried the mashing the keyboard and pressing each key deal, the problem happened, and kept going.
I went to the Verizon store and this was the first they heard of it and they didn't believe me. So I had them come to this site and read the forum and then try to type a few SMS's to themselves... Lets just say that their jaws dropped at all the double dd's, ll's oo' qq' ee' pp' tt's and about 1/2 the letters along with the no shows.
So they swapped out my Pre Plus for a new one and the issue seems gone. I thought it happened once or maybe 2x right when I got it, but today I wrote a LONG email for work and not one missed or doubled letter... So I'm convinced that the problem is a bad batch of first run hardware from Palm.... Just like the Slider issue from Sprint, Verizon has the double trouble keyboard issue.
Anyways, it seems problems fixed, for now.... Now with that and that clear case they sold me that totally makes the Seido's case seem weak and feable, I have to say that it really makes the phone stand out. I already had people ask me about the phone and they couldn't believe it was that "Palm" device and wanted more info.
A possible solution: I have found that if I type by pressing on the individual keys hard with my thumbnails, that the double letter business is a thing of the past. You can experiment and press your finger lightly on a key -- it will cause multiple letters until you lift it. Striking hard and releasing it results in a single letter. It does the trick for me -- hopefully it will for some others.
For keyboard issues, try using a high quality microfiber cleaning cloth (mine is Mystic Maid brand), very slightly wetting it, and wiping the keyboard while pressing the buttons very firmly. I do this whenever the keys begin to stick, etc. and it solves the problem.
I void warranties. For the longest time I had the same problem. Believe me people, I tried everything posted here to no avail. Alas I decided to find out for myself what was behind my problem and decided to open up my Pre Plus and see what was the root of it. Keep in mind I had thought that since I had dropped it and cause some cosmetic damage to it, I was thinking that, had I not fix the keyboard problem, I would bite the bullet and get me a new one.
Results:
When I got to the part of to disassemble the keyboard, I found out that THE CABLE WAS LOOSE FROM IT'S SOCKET!!!!!!!!!!
Conclusion: Start voiding warranties, you can learn alot! :-D
I forgot to add, I currently have and I am using (with its full working keyboard who has not given me any problems whatsoever) the same phone. Now if I could just find a new front cover for it...
