Keyboard Shortcut: Shift + Enter to tab between fields 25
by Adam Marks Mon, 15 Nov 2010 10:55 pm EST
Do you miss the ability to "tab" between fields using a D-Pad or would just like to be able to move between fields using the keyboard? You actually have this ability by pressing Shift (
) and Enter (
) at the same time, but note that this does not universally work throughout webOS. In fact, it appears to work only in some of the stock webOS apps, and only for text-entry fields (i.e. no drop-downs). Here are the apps that it does appear to work in:
- Messaging: When sending a new message, switches between the "To:" address bar and the "Enter message here..." area
- Email: When sending a new email, switches between the "To:" address bar (and the "CC:" and "BCC:" areas if shown), the "Subject", and the Body of the email.
- Calendar: When editing a calendar entry, switches between the "Name" of the event, "Event Location", and "Event notes"
- Tasks: When editing a task, switches between the "Name" of the task and "Task notes"
- Know of any other apps this will work in?

Cool - never thought about tabbing until you mentioned it - just got comfortable with the finger touch method from day one - THANKS for the tip!
NEW TASK: Find out how this works so Homebrew can implement it.
My first thought also. Can a patch be written to keymap Shift+Enter to Tab?
Now I need to work this into my WebOS habits. Especially for calendar....
Yay, one I didn't know! Thanks.
Does not appear to work in browser text boxes. Sure wish it did.
I didn't know about this, but in the browser is exactly where it is needed. One thing I liked about the iPhone keyboard was the "next" button when in a web form.
+1
+1 more!
Especially now where I'm using my Pre much more due to the power being out (from the storm that hit the DC area yesterday). Sites I could enter data on in 5 minutes on the laptop take around 20 on the Pre. At least I can get to them, though. And the laptop makes for a good charger when there's nothing else...
I did not know this! Thanks Adam
Useful tip, just need it to be implemented at the OS level so it's universal instead of only in select apps.
I learned two things today
I actually hate this feature for 2 reasons.
1) I've had times where I've been typing the body of an email or message and end up doing this accidentally. I keep on typing and screw up my To: field. I really can't think of why I would end a line in a capital letter and then hit enter, but I know it's happened. I guess if I was writing something like:
"WTF
OMG
LOL
that's crazy..."
So, clearly, this feature is terrible for teenage texters!
2) I never new this until your post. I hate that there's something I didn't know about using webOS. DIE YOU STUPID SECRET FEATURE!!!
this "tab" functionality is available in 'BestPrice', a cost-per-unit calculator/converter/comparer.
Very nice, thanks a lot. Soooo.... maybe there is PgUp and PgDn at keyboard as well? I miss it very much, I'm sick of thes ewaving pictures and letters on th escreen :(
In case you weren't aware, when in landscape mode use the gesture area as a page up/down action. If your in landscape mode, this will not case you to go backwards.
Use the Multi Mod patch for the browser to get kayboard shortcuts for page up, page down, line up, line down, top of page and bottom of page. I'm so glad someone told me about that because the PreCentral comments go so long that scrolling by flicking gets old!
This is the BEST tip yet! I was completely unaware of this feature. Ever since day one I hated not being able to tab. I just wish this was available in the web browser.
Wow, that's interesting. I would love it if this was a more standard feature!
Hah, works in Fuel! Thanks Rob!
Doesn't seem to work well in Calendar (goes back and forth between Name and Event Location, but not to the Event Notes area), but I've got a UberCalendar patch installed, so maybe that's why?
Ubercalendar is cool, but it restricts some of your calendar functions. Like if an event pops up, you can tap the item but it won't open the calendar like it should!

I use keyboard shortcuts heavily when on my desktop computer. I was hoping there was a way to do it on the PRE, however it doesn't work where I like it - on the web.
It's a start, though!
I missed this from my iPhone, but it needs to work in the browser. That's the main area I would use this in.
