Mail2Web Hosted Exchange Brings in webOS 16

Mail2Web Exchange on webOS Do you want Microsoft Exchange for all that magical calendar, email, and contacts syncing and pushing onto your webOS phone, but don’t feel like paying for a server all your own? Mail2Web may be the solution you’ve been looking for. The service hooks into your current email accounts, including Gmail and Hotmail, as well as your ISP or business mails, pushes it through their Exchange servers, and down to your phone.

Mail2Web also provides you with something that your Palm Profile doesn’t give: online web browser access through a standard Outlook Web Access client. Mail2Web costs $4.95/month, though a 60-day free trial is currently available. For more information, check out Mail2Web’s website.

Of course, there are plenty of other hosted-exchange services out there like 4smartphone and 1and1 - which is your favorite?

Thanks to not-yet-pre for the tip!

I've been using Mail2Web for the past few years, first on my Palm Centro and now on the Pre. One great advantage is that you can switch phones or even carriers and still keep your contacts, email, and calendar appointments with you.

When can we get Lotus Notes on the Pre?

The Pre lacks the necessary Java to render the buttons in standard WebMail view. I try to forcibly set it to minimal view (by tying in the *correct* URL), the Pre won't launch the link Domino sends out to "Continue with unsupported browser" to actually launch mini view. The current Exchange plugin for mail won't connect to Lotus, and IMAP isn't enabled on the server.

What's next to try?

Lotus Traveler. It is not officially supported, but it works (no todo sync).

Aint Notes discontinued yet???

Just 5 buck for peace of mind you wont loose your data is hella of a bargin.

I never said I like the POS! I just have to use it... :-\

Lotus Notes in the wild:

why would anyone want to use mail2web for gmail?

Possibly if they wanted to consolidate/forward a few email accounts into one... But then again, why wouldn't you just forward them all to gmail if you wanted to consolidate email?

I use dnamail.com for true Exchange hosting - it's $8.95/mo on a month to month contract with 3GB of storage space. It works flawlessly with WebOS. Unlimited storage space is only $12.95 per month.

I used 1and1 for awhile, but it was buggy and they had a significant amount of downtime.

why would ANYONE pay for exchange hosting? you can do everything for FREE with gmail?

i think palm called the technology 'synergy'

multiple contacts, email and calendars on a single device from the cloud....

why do we need to pay $4.95 a month for that. maybe the OP got a free year for writing the article....

Or maybe the OP doesn't want Skynet hosting all of his information for their social graph data mining purposes. Or maybe he'd rather have someone in a contractual relationship hosting his business email so that he actually has a POC when the servers go down.

If the app allows you to have local calendar functions instead of Pre's everything-in-the-cloud-with-no-local-cache calendar, I'd consider paying for it just to have better access to my personal data.

gmail doesn't do certain things exchange does (without getting into whether it's needed or not) such as task management, etc. And the way gmail handles contacts is abhorent. I don't need every recepient I have ever emailed to be added to contacts.

I found a thread on here about contacts. I set up the contacts I wanted on my phone in the My Contacts instead of All Contacts and set up my Contacts as EAS Using user.name instead of username and the domain m.google.com as the EAS server. It works well and doesn't put all the junk contacts that gmail does. Search the forums for info.

I am still confused, is there a way to sync my Pre with Outlook on my stand alone PC? I can sync with the remote service that forwards the mail to our server, then to my PC but only if it hasn't been opened by my PC. Also I'd really like to sync notes and anything else that isn't in the clouds or on Gmail. I've looked on the forum but couldn't find the answer. Thanks

I have been using MailStreet since I got my Pre on Day 1 (June 6) for my personal Exchange ActiveSync, so that's almost six months. They have done a very good job --very reliable, no downtime. Actually, they are doing better than my work ActiveSync with 3 IT guys :-)

They are at http://www.mailstreet.com/ and their rates are very competitive.

I did use Google for a while but I hated having "sent through xxxxx@gmail.com" on every email I was writing, not to mention that people would simply hit Reply and send their response to my Gmail account instead of my personal domain email. I much prefer to use "me@personal-domain.com" than "me@gmail.com" or a combination or both.

Besides, I think we are giving too much info to Google: cell phone numbers, navigation, contacts, emails, calendar events, search history, news preferences.... You would never allow Microsoft to have access to that much personal data, so why would you give it to Google?

I was happy w/mail2web for years before they dumped their free accounts. While it was nice to use as a push mail service (I forwarded my gmail to it so that I could push to my phone), it wasn't worth paying $60 a year for. Thankfully, since the Pre supports push-Gmail, I no longer need this middleman.

Can anyone recommend a good hosted exchange provider outside of the US, preferably in the EU, outside of the UK. I'd like to find a provider in a country that has better privacy laws than the good ol' US of A. Any suggestions?
