Manually set up a Wi-Fi connection 5

by Adam Marks Tue, 18 Jan 2011 10:38 pm EST

There may be times when you need to manually set up a Wi-Fi network, such as when a network is hidden and does not broadcast its ID. To manually set up a network connection, either open the Wi-Fi app or, from anywhere in the OS, swipe down from the top-right to access the Connections dropdown menu, tap "Wi-Fi" and then choose "Wi-Fi Preferences". Under the list of available networks, select "+ Join network" to display the "Join Other Network" pop-up. Enter the network name (SSID) and choose the appropriate security settings of the network and select "Connect". If you did it correctly, you should now be connected to your Wi-Fi network

A related tip: If you connect to a hidden network (SSID not broadcasted), you might find WebOS doesn't auto-connect to it sometimes. A quick way to correct that issue (without needing to re-enter your Wireless key) is the following:

1. Click +Join Network as if you were re-adding the NW
2. Pick the security type and click in the network name. Do not click Connect
3. Watch the NetworkIDs above --> you should see your 'hidden' network pop-up and auto-connect (assuming you have successfully connected to it before & have the settings saved).

Is there any way to get WPA2 as a selectable security option on the Sprint Pre Minus?

Yes & No. I'm currently using a my Pre+ (same 802.11G as your minus) on a WPA2 Network. Use the WPA option in WebOS - seems to work for both WPA & WPA2

Is there a way to access shared files on a Windows PC across wi-fi?

Not really, to my understanding. That said, WiFi Media sync is a great product that helps simplify data transfer. The other option you could look at is exposing the Pre's filesystem with SSH (a route I haven't taken / I'd suggest caution & pre-reading before going there).
