Mobile Hotspot App appears for Sprint and AT&T Pre users, but doesn't work [Update: It's been removed] 45

by Robert Werlinger Mon, 17 May 2010 6:03 pm EDT

The Palm mobile hotspot app has mysteriously appeared in the App Catalog for Sprint and AT&T Pre users, and guessing by the universal experience of "install failed" error messages folks get when they attempt to download the program combined with the lack of any tethering packages for the Pre through either carrier, this is likely nothing more than a mistake on Palm's part.  Since all of the reviews are in German, this is probably the mobile hotspot app destined for O2 Germany that somehow got published in the wrong catalog(s).

However, by employing the workaround that enabled users to download apps during the App Catalog's most recent outage (turning network time off and rolling the month back to April), users are reporting that they're actually able to install the app and launch it.  Once installed, however, users are greeted with a message stating that their carrier doesn't support data sharing, and the application fails to allow connected devices to access the internet.

Folks interested in downloading this should be aware that using this or any tethering app without the proper tethering plan violates carrier policy, and by using it, you may very well incur their wrath (or: proceed at your own risk using this as a starting point for tethering).

Update: The hotspot app has been removed from the Catalogs it doesn't belong in.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Yup I grabbed it with the "rewind" glitch. I wonder why and how it got in to sprint and att app catalog.

WANT Tethering?

Mytether.net

thanks your mobile hotspot tutorial worked like a charm

I posted a tutorial in the forums weeks ago on how to install the Mobile Hotspot app on a Sprint Pre for free and get it to actually work.

I think this same method should work on an AT&T Pre Plus.

http://j.mp/9X6npt

Nope does not seem to work at least for AT&T Pre+ v1.4.2

haha dude i got the older mobile hotspot to work just by adding it again with the freetether and the autoenableipfowarding patch i still like my tether better

1.4.1.1 Sprint Pre

this is just more proof that Verizon is the place to be. LoL

Your pointer link is broken, or at least doesn't point to the thread\post you were obviously referring to.....

Thanks - Fixed!

Sniff... No legitimate tethering for Sprint Dangit...

at least you can still tether illegitimately, though I gave up doing that when I got an overdrive device (awesome speed)

Why does Sprint allow tethering on the BlackBerry? Seems like if they allow it for one device, they should for any.

The mobile hotspot app just jumped to the top of the list of newest apps in the german App Catalogue w/o any update. Might have been related to the brief appearance on Sprint and AT&T.

I'm right there with you. I'm a day 1 Pre beta tester. 364 days of waiting for a polished product. Better luck next time. A WebOS tablet might be nice, though.

Just another slap in the face to us Day 1 Pre owners. 18 more days, Thats all i got to say. LMAO

Why? So you can be a Day 1 Evo owner? I'm excited about it's potential too, but I'm going to wait and watch a few months. Perhaps I could buy it for less AND get Android 2.2?

I got mY pre on day one and I love the phone, it was exciting getting the new updates about once a month, and with preware ppl who stayed in the know via precentral, btw watching house I'm guessing he just did an atnt promo, said switched carriers more rollover mins, ok...back

Webos is equal or better than iPhone os, and android doesn't compete as of now, no 3d gaming
That being said I got a sprint upgrade and had palm released a new phone I'd get it, but evo is sprints newest best....

Also most ppl know about

Mytether.net which allows hotspot for webos

Come june 4th i'm throwing my Pre out the damn window

Why wait? You could leave now, I'm sure most of us would say 'good riddance' to all the EVO junkies and trolls touting the latest in HTC ugliness before they've even touched one...

Hey noW...I love webos, I'd lick webos' vagina all day everyday if I could but I had the pre for a year and it's time to change phones....hands down webos makes the android robot get on his knees and eat her snatch....wut I'm trying to say with my not so under the radar comments is compared to webos android sux....but If there was a new webos phone I'd get it but alas none is available so imam use my upgrade

Dang I was thinking Sprint was letting us have mobile hotspot for free. But why would they do that with that Evo coming out. More people might have keep their pre's instead of getting evo's.

I was thinking maybe they worked a deal with palm to give the hotspot for free to keep people from jumping to evo, i guess there is still that chance. Evo has not been launched yet!

Mytether.net
Allows for a small donation mobile hotspot
I have used it since it was in beta!

I hope Sprint doesn't charge us Pre users who have the Mobile HotSpot installed. Evo users are going to have to pay $30 to enable their device to have it. I'd rather stick with my Pre.

With Mytether.net as long as you have unlimited data it's free minus the donation......

some guy was probably sittin at his desk at palm hq. All drunk from his party last night and published it to sprint.

I tried down loading it and it failed, but still is highlighted in my phone with a yellow triangle, since they removed from the app catalog I guess I am screwed now to do the date turn back because when I try to redown load it it says it's not in the catalog anymore, is there anything I can do now?

try posting your question again. Maybe that will work.

can you say quadruple post?
uhm yes it's true that the evo has yet to launch and anything can happen, but y'all have to understand where tethering comes in the first place. tethering is allowed by choice of the carrier. vzw was the first to allow it, so they locked it in an exclusivity contract, while at&t relies on it's ability and to talk and surf simultaneously, and sprint gets stuck with ancient hardware -.-

don't hit refresh and it won't double post

"don't hit refresh" or just toss the card away after you post, then open P|C again. Just takes a moment.

I have a sprint pre, i'm not getting that error. in fact, i've set up a connection, my laptop picks it up, and I'm able to connect to it. the pre confirms the connection, and disconnection. only thing I haven't been able to do is actually browse the web.

i have mobile hotspot on my Sprint Pre version 1.0.11 works great

Sprint 1.4.1.1 users - if you want the mobile hotspot working, use this link -

http://forums.precentral.net/web-os-development/239471-how-

install-mobile-hotspot-1-4-1-1-sprint-pre.html

Note: url is on different lines - it's too long. Copy and paste them in as one big string.

Just did it and it works!! I'm using it to post this!

I was able to install it after rewinding the clock, and it works for me! Maybe one day Sprint will get with the program! Especially, charging so much extra for the wifi hotspot for the EVO!

it's sad that you don't get this program (outside of germany) and have to use homebrew instead, it works very well.

per one of the first comments.......

want to pay for a busted app that has zero support?

My Tether

I downloaded the app & got it to work simply by removing my battery & leaving it off for a short period after the yellow icon came up saying download failed when I powered my phone back on BINGO there it was & I called *2 & questioned customer service about it & the lady said with my unlimited data plan I could use it all I wanted so if you still have it on your menu with the yellow ! sign maybe you should try this cause my hot spot works just fine & I'm stoked about it

Thanks Scotty that worked it downloaded, but the only problem is I can get it to connect to the computer but it is a local connection only with no internet am I missing something here thanks..

Just an update on this... I left the icon for this app on my phone uninstalled ever since it wouldn't install the day I downloaded it, and noticed today it it finished installing, and works!! My Macbook connected perfectly this evening! I just set the the WPA password, looked at my available networks, and it came up as WebOS Network B2:23:97 Just wanted to let anyone interested know. I'm gonna check the app catalog now to see if it is back in there... I'll update if I find it.
