Mojo SDK Hints at the Future of Clipboard: Improvements on the Way? 25
Ever since CES, Palm has been adamant that WebOS would have copy and paste, something the iPhone didn't have at the time. What Palm didn't say at the time was that their cut/copy only worked in editable text fields, leaving much of the WebOS clipboard-less. But don't despair, an update may be on the way.
While checking out Palm webOSdev page for the Mojo StageController, I can across this interesting tidbit (emphasis ours):
Mojo.Controller.StageController.setClipboard(escapeHTML:, escapeHTML
This allows the client application to send text to the clipboard to be pasted elsewhere later.
- Parameters:
- {Boolean} escapeHTML:
- ignored in initial setClipboard api; later will allow pasting of rich text
- escapeHTML
Folks, you heard it here first: a more advanced clipboard seems to be in the works. Granted it could simply mean this future clipboard will be able to handle bold, italic and underlined text in the RichTextEdit widget, which isn't as exciting, but still much needed functionality. Our hope is that Palm is working on a way to select text in their HTML/Rich Text views (ex. the browser and email app, for a start).
Regardless, it does show Palm has some plans in the works for cut/copy/paste to handle more than plain text. And let's be honest here, chances are Palm has heard our complaints about the current limited clipboard. It's only a matter of time before Palm does eventually get around to implementing a stronger, more capable version, right?

I like what you did there Avlab, copy and paste. good one! Great Job!
Lol pyrognome. I actually refreshed the page at 11:50 and it reposted my comment. Not sure why it did that. Must be because I'm using the Pre?
Haha :) Except Palm had it long before the iPhone was a thought. That it isn't on the Pre is baffling.
During Palm's twitter-based Q&A session yesterday, they intimated that Microsoft EAS was behind the lack of the restricted copy/paste functionality.

I searched their support forums for further info but couldn't find any.
great, nine times out of ten I have a hard time just getting copy and paste to work as it is. I feel like the stars have to be aligned in order to get it to work. I am a senior developer so I am very technical.
"@willxcore copy paste non-editable text: There are MSFT EAS policy issues affecting this. Lots of discussion on support forums."
Don't quite understand how that matters.
All we have to do is hit reply, copy the text of the email since it is now editable, and can do whatever we want with it.
So just open up the copy/paste functionality already :)
I think EAS was a priority issue, not a technical issue. People literally couldn't connect to most corporate email, so they had to address that and it took resources away from other feature requests.
Text fields do not generally contain rich text, but rather plain text. Rich text needs to be copied in context. This would indicate expanded copy/paste functionality.
Surely a rich clipboard function was on the initial blue prints, but sacrificed to get the product out the door. Which would you rather have- a complete clipboard and no phone at all or phone now with a partial clipboard?
a phone, that lacks no basic features
From an IT Analyst perspective, my Centro was a more capable phone business wise. Less cool, for sure but more functional. Versamail was no frills EAS support, full C\C\P ability, EVDO, and DTG reading & editing was icing on the cake.
I was able to route my inbound VOIP calls to my Centro with the Call Manager and rarely needed to be at my desk. I'm making some concessions with the Pre but I know Palm will get it right. (PLEASE DTG 10+, please?)
Syncing Outlook tasks is a boon for me now tho so that's good.
This along with a cool onscreen keyboard that works in landscape mode as well (as announced recently) is starting to add real polish to this device :-)
