More Apps in the Catalog, No Paid Apps Yet 35
No paid apps yet and sadly, no webOS 1.2.1 yet either (as we suspected), but we do have a heap of new apps in the App Catalog. Franz in our forums put together the list:
- m:Vampire
- m:Mafia
- GolfPinFinder Demo
- Guitarist's Reference
- YPmobile For Palm Pre
- Greeting Card Messages
- bWeather
- SNAKE
- Go To Tool Lite
- Tic Tac Toe for WebOS
- FreeWeather
- Photo Fun - Spot The Missing Pieces (Free)
- Photo Fun - Spot The Difference (Free)
- TMaps - Philly
Nine of the above you've already seen in homebrew, 10 if you count kardin's second photo app. Congrats to justinmoblyng, moserjj, kardin, mapara, roar, and markpowers! Congrats to Palm, too: you guys may have missed your traditional Thursday release, but the fact that you're growing the developer community by including apps from so many diverse people more than makes up for it.
Oh, and of course -- thanks to everybody who sent this in!

I am not excited , 1.2 update is important to me.
Remember, Palm never indicated any date for 1.2, nor even said that there was going to be a 1.2 update! It was PreCentral and the rumormill, that detailed what was in the update and when such an update would come. Don't blame Palm for not pushing the update when the RUMORS said it would come!
Agree completely.
Um, Sprint did release a date for 1.2, and after that date was missed, they pulled the page about it from their website.
Albeit, that was Sprint and not Palm. But it's not strictly PreCentral and the rumormill when Sprint has confirmed it.
Its hearting to see, that even though, Palm hasn't delivered the goods we're all waiting eons for, at least, they are acknowledging our pains, by giving us "something" - at least, new apps is better than nothing. So, at least, the week hasn't been a total waste in terms of customers getting something for their patience.
Agree.
I want 1.2 though.
most of the apps in the catalogue pretty much suck. lets all be honest. Out of the 80 something apps, maybe use 3 of them. most of the better ones are all homebrew(not that there arent some really useless homebrew apps too) im waiting to see some really polished, useful apps. And i'm also very disappointed that we're still waiting for 1.2. If the delay was because of Itunes, it shouldnt be that late, as we were told it didnt take palm very long at all(a few hours maybe) to develop the workaround. I want better power mgmt. I'm so fearful of battery life, that i hardly ever have my phone unpluggged from my car charger, work computer, home charger. Ive seen the battery life drop by 20% in about a half hour with only moderate usage. Palm needs to come out with a higher capacity battery than what is currently shipping
I think the main reason for the short battery life is the "always online" aspect of the pre. I had a Palm Treo Pro and you would have thought it had a great battery life...until you streamed too much data that is..then the batt didn't last much either. But still, I agree, knowing this they should have provided better batteries.
I find it ironic that the developer behind YPmobile is AT&T Interactive.
Re: AT&T Interactive: I find it *very* interesting!
OK Dieter, until 1.2x is released, please give a total app count!
What annoys me is that I have about 34 apps from the app catalouge installed on my week old pre. An update is available for word ace and it is telling me "not enough space". I must remove an app in order to install the update to word ace. I have like 6 gigs of onboard memory left on my pre. Battery life does suck loads. All I have to do is check my email and read the news from yahoo mobile or msn and within a half hour i'm down to 62%. This is with wifi off and no cards open beside the One i'm using.
Agree with @LTracte power management is a huge drawback to such a wonderful device. Palm needs to develop a longer lasting battery.
I wonder how important 1.2 would be if it were never leaked in the first place. I think it's hilarious that people are refreshing their update buttons waiting, hoping to see that glorious 1.2 update available for download.
Palm is going out of their way to shoot updates out to Pre owners - certainly with more frequency than Apple did when iP was released. Give Palm a break, for god sakes. This is only a phone. You'll get your free update when they're good and ready to send it. Besides, you know you'll only be hitting that refresh button for 1.3 anyway once 1.2 comes, and when it doesn't come fast enough, you'll be agonizing over why Palm doesn't seem to care about its users.
And as far as most apps in the catalog being useless, here's a news flash: (1) they are all FREE right now, and (2) most apps are useless PERIOD. This whole saga over apps availability is ridiculous.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I bought a Pre to have a good phone that I could check my e-mail on, maintain a calendar and occasionally look at a web site. Guess what - the Pre does that better than any smartphone on the market in my opinion. I know the calendar is slow right now, and that battery has issues. But considering all the advantages of synergy, I'm willing to put up with that for the benefit of not syncing something to my computer every day. Because of the Pre, my phone has become an easy daily companion to me that I don't have to take much care of.
Has anyone taken a look at the Apple catalog lately? Most of those apps suck too. Apps generally suck. While they're are going to be some very good and useful apps available on all smartphones, It doesn't seem like the people whining about app availability on this board are concerned about those more than they are the general availability of MORE apps. Give us "MORE APPS." This is pathetic. When the catalog gets "more apps," these will be the same people complaining that they suck, and Palm is unreasonable for charging for them.
I like coming to this board to get some useful info about a phone that I like using. Lately, however, it has become a community of whiners.
I agree with you about most apps being useless. I am not saying that i want MORE apps. Im saying i want USEFUL ones. An again, i do think the Pre is a great phone, but the battery life is atrocious. If you rely on your phone for anything more than just being a phone, you cannot go an entire day without charging it. Even if your use is moderate at most.
I couldn't agree with you more. I LOVE my Pre. It is the best phone out there. The multitasking alone make it amazing. Palm did something incredible with this device.
Agreed 100%. This forum are a bunch of complaining whiny bastards.
:...( omg icant believe the update isn't out yet I'm just going to sit here and cry all day, I'm never reading any comments or forums again, I fell like I'm on a website full of k4 kids whining because they got broccoli instead of orange slices.
Yes. I am with you 100% on your sentiment! People need to remember that Palm never indicated any date for 1.2, nor even said that there was going to be a 1.2 update! It was PreCentral and the rumormill, that detailed what was in the update and when such an update would come. Don't blame Palm for not pushing the update when the RUMORS said it would come!
I agree with JamRock Fi_we
I can get through the day from 6:30A till 10P and still have about 25%. That is with moderate use prior to work and after and light use during. What the heck are you doing on your phone during your work day?? Tsk Tsk. I just bought an additional charger so now I can charge during the work day as well which pretty much gives me no battery issues now. Woot!
Totally agree. Stop your whining. Palm never said when 1.2 was arriving so how the hell can they be late??
So... anyone who needs a friend in M:Mafia can add me 126606377
the game is pretty good. It directly links with the Facebook app which is unique.
(trying desperately to get the comments back on topic)
I can't wait to try this out.

Argh... installs keep failing. I got a couple early this morning but it seems problems developed soon afterwards.
Alot of good new apps are when I keep getting the message, "Sorry, Not Enough Memory"
I've had that happen too. The first thing I try is to download another app then come back to the one which gave me the error msg about not having enough memory. That usually works.
Another trick is to delete one then go back and resinstall it.
It's annoying and definitely needs to be fixed.
Won't even let me install a small app. Can't even do an update either. I've complained to Palm!
Great to see more apps, too bad the app install limit has such a low ceiling.
Palm should implement a install method similar to Preware.
Where is the VVM app?... Phonefusion offered to write that app from day one. Where is this app?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b64_16K2e08 The Hero on Sprint will have this app available for download. Palm does not want a redundant app-catalog like the iphones app store, the app-catalog is already staring out that way.
Here is another one for Android: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReH9dmqfOqA Being that both webOS and Android are based on Linux, it should not be hard to write this app for webOS. After all, Palm did boast that Pandora was written in two days.
when I try accessing the app catalog, it said that app catalog is unavailable, and please try again later. both on evdo and wifi connection. is anyone else having the same problem? I wonder does this mean a good surprise is coming our way? ;)
yawn. i love my pre but the apps suck ass other then about 10 from homebrew & 2 from the app catalog. some of the paid apps may be more then i'm willing to pay but i just want to see that they can impress me. Good apps are good for the platform.
I don't mind that the update has been delayed. I just wish Precentral (Dieter ??) would post a new, front-page article dedicated to the current state of the 1.2(.1) update (instead of just incidentally glossing over it in another article). That is probably why over half of us are on this website most of the time.
I'm sure they can scrounge up some modicum of information from Palm or Sprint or *somebody* in the know.
Thanks in advance. You guys do a great job!
(FYI - I posted this in the Official webOS 1.2.1 Anticipation thread, also)
For all of you complaining about battery life, I don't know what you are doing with your phone. With moderate web browsing, moderate texting, and light talking I get over 30 hours. The only things I do are:
1. Leave the brightness sort of low.
2. Turn GPS and anonymous data off.
3. (This is the biggest one) I dial ##3836# (##EVDO#) and turn it to 1xRTT only when I am not using 3G. This alone gave me 15 extra hours of battery life.
Note: I take absolutely no responsibility for anything you do with your phone. Dial at your own risk ;)
all which are rubbish and of no use to me!!! I want 1.2 already !!!!!!!!!!!!!
