More carrier rep training confirms: not everybody getting webOS 2 32

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 22 Feb 2011 5:39 pm EST

We don't want to interrupt the rejoicing going on right now, what with HP actually releasing webOS 2 for European Pre Plus phones, but the above missive from HP's aforementioned carrier rep training site is probably going to rain on some parades. It comes at the beginning of a new series of training videos that describe the new features in webOS 2. It reads:

Through developing the features and enhancements to support our new hardware platforms, we came to the conclusion that the new features of webOS 2 were not delivering the experience that HP would like to provide its customers on some legacy devices. We made the difficult decision to not offer future feature-enhancement updates on some legacy devices released prior to Pre 2. All features highlighted in the following course are available on Pre 2 and recently announced devices.

Well, we're thanking the powers-that-be that HP saw fit to include the "some" in "some legacy devices," but while the Pre Plus in Europe received the update (sans Flash and Voice Dialing), things aren't looking good for the original Pixi and Pre just now. As for the rest, we'll have to refer back to HP's original story from February 9th that it would depend on carrier approval.

Unlike last time we saw these videos, there doesn't seem to be any hints at new form factors like Netbooks, just straightfoward, cheery training for people who want help selling webOS (and earning swag too). There are, however, some neat promotional videos for the TouchPad, Veer, and Pre 3. Catch a quick photo after the break of what looks like a new Agenda view for the TouchPad.

HP, YOU SUCK AGAIN LOL

All the more reason to not carry Palm/HP products. Having to support two drastically different o/s versions, with a small number of very angry customers on each.

HP is lazy, HP lies. HP making things right is gonna be a gift card to hp.com/store All of our anguish will be roughly the value of a couple of inkjet cartridges and 20 s+h.

I totally agree! the issue also is if they can do it now to early adopters whats stopping them from doing it again in the future. We all upgrade to the pre2 or pre3 Webos 3.0 is released and thats not compatible with existing phones and the cycle goes on and on. It might be time to start looking for a manufacturer that looks after its customers.

Two times in two years (Treo, Pre), Palm/HP has turned their backs on an existing userbase, and now they want a little phones (pre2 and up) to keep up with their big powerful slates? I smell more rotting hardware in the headwind as they go full throttle on slate development and cant be bothered building links between Pre 3 and the slates. This is what they've shown us, this is what I fully expect. I've tried to keep an optimistic view of Palm/HP's heading, but this is as far as I can go. Their detachment from their customer's needs is as bad as Toshiba's back when they were #1 in laptops and they just stopped caring.

what does it means...?
Its not really clear

does Pre Plus on SFR will be released?

The Veer link goes to the TouchPad link. Can you fix this - :)

done

I never really wanted to keep this phone that long anyway...really want that Pre 3......since they're taking their time letting me know for sure that they're not releasing it on sprint, I am stuck between upgrading to an evo( love that large screen) and replacement Pre number 9.....this is a much arder choice than you would think, cause no.9 is running really well! If I leave webOs, it won't be for long....

Personally I dont care about getting 2.0 on my Sprint Pre, I am more concerned about my upgrade path to a 'Sprint Pre3' than a WebOS2.0 Sprint Pre-

I do however hope that HP grants access to 2.0 on anything made after Pre- because hardware wise it really isnt up to par...

+1

Many of us on Sprint are due for not only an upgrade now, but 4-6 months away from contract fulfillment. Got my Pre in Sept. 09. Only recently got small crack and starting to oreo. I can hold out 4-6 months and decide then if I will stay with Sprint. Nothing we can do but wait or pay ETF and get out now. Complaining here solves nothing. Please vist Sprint, HP and Palm sites to air your displeasure.

'Twas the week after Christmas
...
The webOS update brings goodies like Flash,
And Just Type and stacking (and won't cost you cash).
More treats that the new year will bring unto you?
(We have heard that you're feeling they're long overdue.)
...

If I don't get WebOS 2.0 on my Sprint Pre- (only 4 months old) or a FREE phone (see above "won't cost you cash") I will end my 10+ year loyalty to Palm

their not going to give you a free phone. please just get over it. It sucks , we all have to live with it if we want webos, i'd rather have it running extremely well on a device meant for it, then to hear people complain on here about how 2.0 runs awful on their old devices, sucks the battery dry, yadda yadda blah blah blah -.-

@Sphere, it took them over 13 months for them to realize they didn't know how to make Flash work. HP and Palm combined, cant do what an advertising company did on a variety of devices and HP didn't have to balls to tell us directly.

HP didn't buy Palm to get into the cell phone industry. And it doesn't look like they could if they wanted to.

This is more for Pre+ users on att or Verizon since its the newest "legacy" device because it came out just over a year ago. By now, most people who bought a Sprint Pre(-)on contract should be up soon so it's more reasonable for them to upgrade and not just update a choppy version of webOS 2.1.

Apparently people in europe are happy with a phone that doesn't provide the user experience that hp wants for users? Is that what this means?

/sarcasm

All 10 of them. I mean seriously how many palm Pre phones do you think were sold in Europe? My bet is not that many. I tis surprising that people with an upgrade available are actually holding on to a Pre -. There are free or cheap devices that perform better than the Pre. The Pre runs tooo slow.

So, how does HP plan to "make it right"?

Is this how Hype-Promises... Er... HP is going to "make things right" for us?

M.

Sorry guys,

How have you ascertained that flash and voice dialling isn't working?
Is this observation based on the tests that you have run on the AT&T device.

If you follow the relevant threat on www.nexave.de you will see that certain users say that flash is running whilst others say it's not.

One Pre minus owner even maintained that voice dialling worked, albeit not very well.

Furthermore, on p.51 of the German WebOS 2.1 manual flash is explicitely mentioned and at the beginning of the manual explicit mention is made to the Palm Pre Plus (and not to the Palm Pre2).

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Cheers.

Billy-boy-oh-boy

I would be keen to know

You all still crying about not getting the update, not me. I'm waiting for the pre3. Why would you want an update compare to a new device with all the bells and whistle. That's just ass backwards!!!!

what bells and whistles are you talking about... a real app market - NO, a sharp high res screen - NOPE, a company that supports its products and customers - HELL NO! You are ass backwards if you think buying the pre3 is any kind of good idea! The pre3 is junk!

If you love webOS so much Yo all would not be crying about the update. Your hardware is old!!! It's time for an upgrade. We need to support hp/palm so they can stay in business. Understand this, how are they going to keep the best OS alive if they keep giving things away for free. Don't be cheap everybody. Be real!!!!

The sales guys must just love you. How long does one own a smart phone before it's obsolete junk? 2 months? Only one?

This sounds just like the business plan for Apple users.

it sure is time for an upgrade. To android. Deleting this half baked app now. Bye

I think some people are acting like petulant children. For months everyone wanted new devices and now they're complaining about not getting an update which according to HP won't run well enough on the old hardware. Your Pre - is almost 2 years old, it will be eligible for an upgrade by the time the Pre 3 releases. I think people need to chill out a bit and wait to see which carriers are getting the new phones.

iif I can jus get a fresh sprint pre I can last until pre 3

ANDROID FTW!

OK, can someone please start a class action lawsuit? I invested money and a year of my time, waiting for a device that was promised (advertised) to have flash and all of the options associated with it. If I knew in the beginning that there was no chance of ever getting it, or that other things like a Slingplayer app/flash integrated player, I would not have spent the money.

I want a REFUND!

crying about a sprint-pre not getting the 2.1 update is like crying about google not officially releasing froyo for t-mobiles g1.. i mean come on.. at some point your device is gonna become outdated.. i can understand pre plus users being a little upset.. but as a launch day sprint pre user.. i'm not upset.. even though it was "promised.." if i want it that bad i'll meta-doctor.. this is the same for those g1 android users.. they'll use the cyanogen mod.. oh and speaking of meta-doctor.. would it be illegal for someone to post a youtube video of how to do it?

It's funny but some part of me would rather wait until I get a new device to use webOS 2.x. If I get it now, then there won't be anything new about the new device. If I wait, I'll have something to be excited about when I do get the new device.

I probably will have to wait anyway because if it depends on carrier approval, I'm doomed. I'm using an unlocked Pre Plus on a prepaid carrier.

"The pre3 is junk"

Oh really? You know this how? I didn't know anyone had this phone in hand in order to make such an informed conclusion.
