Movistar to Offer Palm Pre in Spain and Latin America 9
Palm Infocenter is reporting that Telefónicas's Movistar will be exclusively offering the Palm Pre in Spain, UK and Latin America. According to Spanish newspaper Expansion (Translated) , Telefónica will offer the Pre in Spain through Movistar "before summer."
From the translated article:
"..For marketing, the operator will require the hiring of its customers a flat rate of data, based on the gradual subsidy expenditure committed by subscribers. This is the same model used to sell the iPhone, which is developing in the high-end smartphones."
The article also mentions the rival between Telefónica and Vodafone, saying that the big rivalry began in 2007 when the Vodafone of Spain snatched up distribution of Apple's iPhone, which the article says is the most famous of the world's phones in the UK. O2, the British subsidary of Telefónica, will be marketing the Palm Pre exclusively in the UK, while Movistar sells it in Latin America.
So again, we hear, "before summer". I'm still hoping that Palm will surprise us with a sooner than summer release. But I'll take the Pre when I can get it.

Movie Star seems to score a lot of the hottest handsets. They were also the very first to get the Blackberry Bold.
Summer starts june 21st right? Is this the first confirmation on a european launch date? it would be very nice to have the pre before summer :D
Did they snatch it from vodafone, or did vodafone say no?
Niether. Vodaphone never had it for it top be snatched from them. They are not the best carrier of choice for Pre for Europe either, so Palm probably said no to them.
would be great to see the palm pre at o2 in germany too
translator malfunction.
vodafone spain never got the iphone, it got the blackberry storm
telefonica in the uk (o2) got the iphone and iphone 3g
telefonica in spain (movistar) got the iphone 3g
the original iphone was never launched in spain
so both the iphone 3g and the palm pre will be available on telefonica (movistar) in spain
the article goes on to say how telefonica stole the iphone from vodafone in the uk, ie, o2 got the iphone, not vodafone, followed on by telefonica getting the iphone 3g in spain.
..while voda gets the second generation google phone (and the blackberry storm), telefonica gets the second generation iphone (iphone 3g) and the palm pre first release.
pre vs storm, i know which i'd rather have ;-)
If this is true then it is great news for iphone users in the UK who want the Pre. I was concerned that I'd need to take a Vodafone contract but now I can just swap out my existing o2 sim which has unlimited data and wifi through BT openzone and the Cloud.
"would be great to see the palm pre at o2 in germany too"
Word!
Me too!
Would be the first Palm on o2 Germany, wouldn't it?
