Mundu IM coming to webOS 33
Mundu, a popular cross-platform multi-protocol IM client, joins ranks of the IM clients (including Agilemobile) coming to webOS devices. There's no solid ETA for the release of their application except for "soon", but there is a mobile specific webpage made just for webOS devices if you need to get your Yahoo! or MSN Messenger fix until their full fledged app is released.
It's great to see bigger names like Mundu and Agile Mobile beginning to develop for webOS, but in an ideal world these IM protocols would be directly integrated into the native messaging app, a la AIM and Google Talk, for a more elegant user experience. We already know that Yahoo! support is forthcoming, and hopefully more protocols will be coming our way.
Thanks to Vara411 for the tip!

this sounds good. native support would be better but who knows how long thats gonna take. i use meebo for multi client right now. mostly works fine but still not great.
I find it a bit disappointing how WebOS is technically capable of doing stuff like this already but isn't live on the device. I'm not big on MSN or Yahoo, but I do want Facebook chat and IRC support.
Facebook chat already works. Just load the regular facebook site in your web browser and start chatting.
I'm sure thats not what he meant. Using that you have to keep the webpage open.
Native Facebook Chat support is in the linux subsystem. The Messaging app uses the same libraries that Pidgin uses which is a multiprotocol Instant Messenger. It's just only AIM and GoogleTalk are active. There are hacks to turn on Yahoo, MSN, Facebook, but it's not perfect and it can corrupt contact entries. You shouldn't need the website on the Pre. It has the libraries to support it natively.
Yahoo and MSN, yes. Facebook: not yet. You might be thinking of Myspace chat support, which was introduced a while ago.

"1.0.4 Facebook Support, Icons fixed when searching for accounts, Gtalk and AIM now use my service to login, improved installer."
This messaging plugin uses the native libpurple libraries, nothing is added, hence it exists.
I would much rather have aim and other chats separate from the texting.. its too easy to leave aim on and kill the battery. I welcome a multiprotocol chat program!
Will the WebOS version handle XMPP/Jabber?
The only problem with integration with webos is that the current messaging front-end is quite slow. It takes forever to thread together your txts and IM messages. I know there is a patch to have messages in different cards but it doesn't solve the underlying problem... speed.
This is great news indeed. I had been waiting for ShapeServices' IM+ since I already had an account with them, but whomever comes first will get my $$. Yes, integration with the core text/IM client on the phone would be great, but I agree that it will likely take awhile. As someone who works in software development, I do understand that Palm has to balance functionality needs, core fixes, and new features alongside available resources to complete the work and so certain items may not make it out there pretty quickly no matter how easy it may seem to us. However, I am glad that the OS is open enough that developers can build on it.
The iPhone app shown in the screenshot is just the web version. I actually find it interesting that they don't seem to have a native iPhone app for mundo since IM clients seem to flock to that platform quickly.
The screenshot shows the Pre WebOS web inteface (application).
i just checked thier website and this apps is FREE for iphone..it better be free for us webos users too.. if not. NOT BUYING IT !!

I don't believe it's actually free on the iPhone -- I think that's just a web-based mobile version of the app, just like you can currently use on the Pre.
The actual app seems to cost $11 for all platforms.
I don't have an iPhone with which to test this theory, so I'm not sure if what I just said is correct or not, but that's what it sounds like to me. Can anyone with an iPhone verify? Is there an actual native iPhone app that is free, or is it just a web-based interface?
If it's just a web-based interface, then it's not even an iPhone app, and it's no better than what's already available on the Pre right now for free. And it means that the Pre will be ahead of the iPhone soon (in regards to Mundu IM) because we'll have an actual app, and they won't. IF I'm understanding correctly, which is a big 'if'. :D

There are no apps in the App Store for search term "mundu" .. I visited their website, and the iPhone support is a web-based "app"..
It will probably be an app that acts as a shell for the web-based app for the Pre .. who knows?
This is old news, but I guess it was missed awhile ago. Also i ike the idea of having a non webOS IM app as an option. Like I have some IM accounts that I wouldn't want those contacts added on the phone.
I am happy to see a standalone IM application, actually - sometimes it's nice to be able to get on, chat and get off without much hassle.
I wonder how long the battery will last being logged in to MSN all day?
On my PalmOS and WinMo devices there was hardly a difference. And I doubt there will be one, considered that the 'standard Pre' is 24/7 connected to Exchange or Google mail/calendar.
I know, currently there is an isse, but this will be solved, rather sooner than later.
I would love to have native Facebook chat. Just not enough people I know use one basic chat client except for Facebook.
Exactly. I would love to have it integrated into the Messaging app itself but would settle for a separate app that works similarly (always logged in, notifications instead of having to have the card open all the time). I basically only use Google Talk for an IM account but would love to be able to be reached at anytime by friends that are only on FB
These web-based (or at least XHTML/CSS/JScript- based) appps are cool but they're so limited. When will we begin to see apps that leverage the powerful linux guts inside the Pre? I'd be stoked to use a scaled-down version of Pidgin to access multiple IMs.
That is, effectively, what we have right now. The core of the messaging services on webos are using libpurple, the main protocol library for pidgin.
Oh, and FYI - it looks like the next version of libpurple will support Facebook chat. I saw a bunch of commits go through just after the last release. So, in theory, that version of the library could get pushed out in a webos update and we'd have native support for that too.
That would be great news! Let's hope it's true.
Awesome! The only app i was missing from PalmOS!!!
I wonder why palm didnt put an app like this in WebOS, the synergy is good with the contacts, but phone contacts are not the same as IM contacts (is like local/phone and worldwide/IM contacts).
Good news.
Thanks for the mobile specific webpage. I just used it to talk to my friend via MSN and it worked perfectly. It has been bookmarked and will be used again. It ran a lot better than I had expected. I cannot believe I completely forgot about web based solutions.
As with ANY other new app.. WHO CARES! WHAT GOOD are all these new apps as long as Palm has a restriction on how many apps you can have. Until they resolve their memory issue, the Palm Pre is just a BRICK. Yes.. a BRICK. FIX the memory issue or NO apps and NO improvements will really mean anything. Don't they get it? NO one will want a new app if they dont have room on their pre for it. Good grief.
Change the record.
Great thing for the moment. I was waiting for MSN IM on WebOS. I am still a happy munduIM user on PalmOS. What I will look for in a native app is voice and file transfer integration. The company who delivers will see me as a customer. :-)
And, the more it is integrated in synergy, the better. But the above functionality is key for me.
I am huge fan of Meebo web IM. It works great on my Palm Pre.
Any of you using it? Integration with AOL, MSN, Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo IM and more
ok it sound nice and fancy, but i need to know when? i'm in the need of this app, pls make it work asap
