Mundu IM hits the App Catalog 47
Mundu IM, the highly anticipated multi-protocol, multi-platform instant messaging solution has finally hit the App Catalog after spending some time available only as a web-only service to webOS users. Priced at a sweet $1.50 during Palm's "Half-time" 50% off everything in the App Catalog sale, MunduIM supports all of the platforms that webOS does out of the box with and a few that it doesn't: MSN Messenger, Facebook, and XMPP.
Now, don't get too excited. After using the application for an afternoon I've come to the same conclusion that I did when we first took a look at the web-only version back in October: having these services rolled into Synergy - you know that Facebook almost certainly will (and already can be by way of a little homebrew) and that MSN Messenger has a good chance - will always be superior to an app like this. Further, Mundu's webOS implementation here is half-hearted at best - the program is styled using little more than the assets that are included with the SDK and support documentation is completely absent (I can't for the life of me figure out how to sign into Facebook messaging).
Those who absolutely can't do without MSN and official Facebook chat support in Synergy will be better off in continuing to use the web-based version until either Mundu dresses their webOS app up to acceptable levels, or those services make their way into Synergy.

atleast it offers new alternatives. Shows we're headed in the right direction!
P.S. First! =]
where is the lite version ?
blah...never even used the IM features in webOS. What's the point unless you are in an area where you are getting charged for text messages? Many desktop clients let you send text messages to phones so being logged in just wastes the batter faster.
Robert, to get Facebook chat to work make sure you use username@chat.facebook.com and then let it try to connect once for awhile which will error out. Then login to Facebook on your web browser and you'll have a note requesting permission to access Facebook in India (where Mundu's servers are located) and do that. Then try again and it works perfectly. However, I can't for the life of me get MSN to connect right. It connects signing me out elsewhere and people can see me sign in, but it just stays on the endless spinning signing in screen for me which it does for others in the forum thread. I hope Mundu releases some good updates soon to get this App more up to par.
Thanks for the Facebook Chat Tips!
This Mundu IM version still need lots to fix.. it self-disconnect several times, and I need to sign in manually which sometimes fail, need to close Mundu and run it again to correctly connect the server.
I get MSN to connect fine but I can't get your technique for Facebook chat to work. I never get the request on Facebook for permission to access my account.
no skype? PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTT
1 I like that you guys used something from webosroundup
2. I have IM+. MSN signs in no problem but is pretty much a sloppy app as well, If Palm wants their devices to be social friendly they need to start telling these companies to step up their game.
I was about to buy mundu just cause IM+ sucks so much but after hearing all the horror stories i think i'll save my $3. Yes $3 cause I'm a second class human from Canada who doesn't ever get any deals from Palm. lol.
I'm also sure that 100's of people have wrote Mundu on their very poor job, I know I write to IM+ all the time telling them to update their App.
I think IM+ was taken out of the app catalog. Haha. I can't find it anywhere anymore.
Also, it's lacking ICQ support, which is pretty common in Europe.
Looks like I'm stuck to ol' crappy IM+ for a while...
I went ahead and bought it since it's a buck fifty and runs what ten dollars on other devices, in case it's updated to be awesome like other platforms would hate to have missed it ya kno!
I like the facebook chat patch available in Preware...facebook chat within the webOS IM client. Free and seamless!
"having these services rolled into Synergy - you know that Facebook almost certainly will (and already can be by way of a little homebrew) and that MSN Messenger has a good chance - will always be superior to an app like this."
I think your missing the point, some people want the option of Not having these IM accounts added via Synergy and not having to use a web site. So its a good option and keeps all those additional contacts off your phone!
This app sucks... The MSN is fine but AIM wont log in... says I need to upgrade to a newer version of AIM... WTF? Also can't rely on IM+ it doesnt respond taps at all after the first few taps, sometimes not even on start... STEP UP YOUR GAME!
I like the stock messaging app and I have the Facebook chat patch installed. My only concern is that I can't change status/availability separately for each service. It's really annoying when I want to be signed in to AIM and Google Talk but not Facebook. I get bombarded with people on Facebook Chat that I'd really rather not talk to at that particular moment.
Actually you can login/change status for services individually. In the messaging app, go to preferences and accounts, tap on one account and a menu pops up. (I hope this feature is not provided by a patch). Only problem is that you have to enter your password every time.
Come on Palm / HP, add MSN and Skype to the options of synergy!
I wish there was a way to say that I'm on a cell phone on facebook
Does this, or any other IM app handle IBM Sametime?
No.
Thanks.
Can this let me actually be invisible or online on yahoo? not "mobile online" or whatever. I can't stand the stock IM, it's too limited. I don't want people knowing i'm on my phone and not at my desk working where i should be, hehe.
OK guys!
I purchased it because I wanted to see how bad it really is!
It's bad!
MSN DOES NOT WORK!
Just getting the 'spinning' sign on. Actually, a similar issue that Homebrew's Messaging Plugins had a one time.
But for a company like this to have this problem is not acceptable. I do know some people are having great success but a lot are having this MSN issue.
I read all the reviews on it and it's a big problem.
I posted a pretty bad reviews and hope that Palm pulls this app out of the catalog and forces mundu to go back and do more beta testing and with a larger group.
This was such a fantastic app on PalmOS but on WebOS, it's pretty bad.
And when I got AIM working, it too a long time for me to figure out how to even post a chat message. Not very intuitive at all.
To make matters worse, the Help menu is grayed out and not even available to find out how to use this thing.
There is not a even a link to support, so all these remarks had to be public since I did not know how to contact support through the application.
Come on mundu, get it together, we don't need apps like this in WebOS's history!
We need outstanding apps from outstanding companies.
You have an outstanding company but you dropped the ball on this, and WebOS!
Rob
If Facebook Chat gets wrapped into Synergy, I think I will no longer know what to do with myself besides stare at Facebook 24 hours a day.
i use the instant messaging patch from greg roll. Canuse any im-protocol that pidgeon (libpurplec) can use, and it has build in synergy, except the saving on the palm servers. Way better then any IM-app
NO skype????? f off then ....and where is my FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jesus christ howlong can you make somebody wait ey??? 1 yr ? 2yr? joke
I'm confused about the Synergy comments. Can a third-party app use Synergy or does this have to come from Palm? I know other third-party can receive messages and send notifications without having to be running. Why can't this app do the same?
They can. For instance, YPmobile creates its own account that integrates into Calendar.
Still no App-Catolog :/
Where? Switzerland and ...
Why not check out my messaging plugins which enhance the messaging app for free...
http://forums.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/233983-messaging-plugins-add-...
It adds the following services to the built in chat application
Live Messenger
ICQ
Jabber
Sametime
Office Communicator
ICQ
IRC
Novell Groupwise
Yahoo
Gtalk
AIM
Facebook
Xfire
Greg
Greg, I've been meaning to but on the surface the thread seems rather intimidating. There are also a lot of people who claim that they can't make the patch work.
Hi! It's not as bad as it may seem. I am not into modding my pre too much, but a few preware patches and the IM Patch from Greg. The installation instructions that Greg provides are spot on and the patches are great, they provide native messaging plug ins with synergy. And the support the he provides in the forum is timely and accurate. Greg, thanks a lot for your work! This is way better than any stand alone app.
Hi Greg,
Does Yahoo work on Verizon Palm Pre Plus? I tried installing the patch six weeks ago and it didn't work for me. Any info would be great and thanks for creating the patch!
Thanks!
Hi,
We understand that a few mundu IM users on Palm Pre are encountering difficulties logging into Facebook chat. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
In order to login to Facebook chat, you will need to use your Facebook username and not the email address with which you login to your FB account on a PC. This is the standard way in which Facebook allows its users to chat on all third party applications.
You can locate your FB username in a few simple steps as mentioned below:
- Login to http://facebook.com on your PC
- Click -> Accounts -> Account Settings
Your username is displayed here.
- In case you do not have one, click on "change" next to the username field.
Follow the instructions to set your username.
Once you set a username, you can use this along with your FB password to login at mundu IM.
e.g: If you have set your username as abcxyz, login at mundu IM as abcxyz.
You may also experience login issues in case you have enabled "Account Security" for your Facebook account. You will be notified whenever you are trying to access your account from a computer or mobile device that you haven't used before.
Once mundu IM throws a login error, login to your Facebook account on your PC using the browser. You'll receive a notification requesting permission to access Facebook in India. Just authorize it and then use mundu IM.
Please write back to us at imsupport@mundu.com for any further clarifications.
Thanks & Regards,
mundu IM Team.
question, is there any future plans to utilise the pdk to handle these different protocols instead of running everything through your servers? If not, is there a reason for this? Thanks
That's what I did a day ago, writing you a mail. The issue: MSN login does only accept .com user names. Too bad that I have a .de I assume...
And, I should have had a closer look before. No ICQ. Too bad. Coming from your PalmOS version, I didn't expect this.
thanks alot, your stupid facebook chat screwed up my facebook app. Now I can't update my statuses from my facebook app.
to verify fb from ur phone go to facebook.com/home.php will give you the full desktop facebook then from there follow all the prompts after you login
okay I logged i n but it didn't give me options to verify my facebook app.
For the most part I am happy with this app it's the only app I have ever paid for... Needs some more basics added and it works well with msn ans yahoo I am sure it will get better with time.
hey everybody. Facebook beta got taken off app scoop. Hmm....wonder what that means.
This app works excellent with facebook and by the way it is in my opinion the best chat app for facebook I ever had on my PRE.
Those patches mentioned above all have their bugs: facebook-chat-patch slows down my PRE dramatically and causes regular Lunar restarts, the Messaging plug-in is not able to sign in on facebook.
So I am absolutely satisfied with mundu. Only the colours of the fonts have to be optimised: dark grey on black is not good for reading :)
For users facing issues login into Facebook Service. I have noticed that one must enter the user name in lower case only, for it to work with mundu im.
Eg: username Saggy or Saggy.Maggy must be entered as saggy / saggy.maggy respectively...
Right now, it's a piece of trash. Trying to get on MSN and get the spinning wheel of death. $1.50 down the drain. I read all the crumby reports but I had to try it myself....guess what, it don't work....
For users facing issues with login into MSN Service, the issue seems to be with pending add contact request from friends. I logged in from my desktop client and cleared all my notifications (i had like 3 friend request) and after I cleaned it up I haven't had any problem at all.
A new version 1.1.0 is out and its very stable. I get all my avtaar images of friends and can chat in all services without any issues. Its the best IM app by far for WebOS :)
Well done - mundu !!! ;)
