Navigation for O2 Germany drops: Free GPS Nav 19

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 08 Sep 2010 9:26 am EDT

While Verizon webOS users struggle with workarounds because Verizon still hasn't fixed the hobbled GPS on the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi, O2 is continuing their longstanding trend of doing right by their customers. To wit, they've released Navigation, based on Telmap. It has local search, voice prompts, and turn-by-turn directions. Maps for German, Austria, and Switzerland are all available - just make sure you don't go over your data limit.

Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

yet another reason I love Sprint. My navigation is included and I cannot go over my data usage.

Get it out in the UK!! Pronto!!

This is the one major weakness of the Pre - no European navigation. Does this require a constant data connection a la Google Maps? They should learn form Nokia with Ovi Maps. I have a Nokia 5230 with Europe on a 2GB card, free for life. Superb service. Don't tell people they have to use less data then release data hungry apps.

Wishful thinking but I bet you it won't happen....

... But you can't go to Germany w/ your Sprint Pre. :)

Please correct this to "O2 GERMANY" !!!! Cause O2 UK does nothing right !!!!

I have to agree 02 UK is pretty sucky right now, the 3G reception seems to be getting worse, the accessories are bloody expensive - Touchstone Dock

i totally agree with you, O2 uk have yet to even release their own app "my O2", Palm should seriously get out of the exclusivity they have with o2 uk. I rather see it open to all network.

At least we've got tvcatchup for live viewing, which isn't a standard in other countries. As far as I'm concerned the iPlayer is based on flash which probably makes the Adobe to be the place to address all our complaints.

I've tried to install the other free satnav app but couldn't load any map into it. But honestly, would you like both the most important devices (phone and gps) rely on the same power source if you were in a middle of nowhere? I wouldn't.

Hi VasTheGreek,

I hope that you will do as I have done and email O2 about the matter, the more we (webOS users) contact them the better. O2 are really not the best company for HP/Palm/webOS as they never really advertise phones, it is all about services they offer.

Telmap is pretty ugly and doesn't fit into WebOS niceley.

O2.de Pres come unlocked by default, so O2.de needs some way to verify only O2.de customers can use Telmap, so they only let you use 3G for navigation. You can't look at the maps or even download your navigation in advance while you're on wifi. Sucks.

Was exited to see this at first, but now I think Navit is still the better option.
I can get any map I want and have it on the device. Works great for me.
Still nice to see they are continuing to bring out new software for WebOS.

Not a good app unfortunately.

3G only, no local maps, terrible UI, completely alien to webos. Better no navi at all than this 'schrott'.

I agree. Not the best app... The UI is just embarassing. And it only runs fullscreen, the notification area is always hidden...(> how to control the music player that way?)
However, it runs completely in the background, and in card mode (though the refresh reate is slower there, and the screen shuts off as specified in the settings of the pre).

But apart from the criticism, it's a very stable and quick app. absolutely useable. Ugly, even not near the TomTom/T5 combo I used years ago, but really does the job!

Thank you o2 for that good, solid app! Now please go and design a UI that does not insult the user!

By the way, I'm interested to see how o2 handles the data usage for navigating in other countries... :-))

I just wish we would gt 1.4.5 so I could take advantage of these apps.

I want to try navit but it requires 1.4.5

Actually you cant really get "over" your data limit on o2 Germany.^^ There are just unlimited data plans! :-D

Also is not yet available for the pixi. come on... help me out O2

By the way, it's a quite power hungry app. After 10min. of navigation, w/o other apps running (except Govnah), my 1GHz Uberkernel Pre ran at 51

One does not simply navigate into Mordor! Until O2 UK bring us some navigation that is.

02 UK don't care about the Pre. Little support or product knowledge. Tried to mail order a touchstone from them and they didn't even know what one was ! Terrible partner who put no apps on the phone. Thank goodness for homebrew, makes the pre what it is.
