New Angry Birds game coming in March 31

by Nathan Mylott Sat, 29 Jan 2011 12:32 pm EST

Even as the Angry Birds juggernaut continues to grow ever larger and barge into the toys and board games market, and even Hollywood, news has arrived that another sequel to the most popular mobile phone game ever is on the way.

Angry Birds Rio is due out in March, coinciding with the release of a 3D animated movie titled Rio. From the animated trailer, it seems you will no longer be battling smug little piggies, but a greedy cockatiel (or some such tropical bird) and his minions. The trailer, which you can see after the break, is of a much higher quality than what we have seen in Angry Birds games and it is backed by 20th Century Fox. That said, we'd expect the standard Angry Birds graphics and experience with this one.

You might assume that the movie Rio is an Angry Birds movie, but it's not really that at all - it's the story of a pet bird in Wisconsin that sets out to Brazil in search of tropical love, nothing really to do with Angry Birds. The game is merely a tie-in with the movie and a chance for 20th Century Fox to promote their film (and for Rovio to release another themed version of the game).

Although we do not have definite word that there will be a webOS release of the new game, it does say in the trailer “in app stores worldwide,” plural, so keep your eyes glued to the App Catalog sometime in March.

it's coming with webOS 2.1

Rovio will keep us waiting again. This will not coincide with the release of the Rio movie for webOS users.

I bet we get it later than iOS and Android. :(

Rovio should love HP. Read how they got their start:

"The seeds of Rovio were sown in 2003 when Helsinki University of Technology students Niklas Hed, Jarno Väkeväinen, and Kim Dikert participated in a mobile game development competition sponsored by Nokia and HP. A well-deserved victory with a real-time multiplayer game called “King of the Cabbage World” compelled the trio to set up their own company, Relude. King of the Cabbage World was sold to Sumea (now Digital Chocolate), and renamed to Mole War, which became the first commercial real-time multiplayer mobile game in the world."

Didn't they win a pot full of money from Palm???

Oh Great! something to try on my New HPalm Phone with webOS 2.nnn

k

It's sad how much this excites me.

Do you think it will run ok on webos 1.4.5, because at the rate HP/Palm is going, we probably won't have the "in the coming months" 2.0 update by then. Forget "Angry Birds"--how about "Angry Palm Device Owners!"

THIS is the news I have been waiting for. New hardware what?

Putzzzzz... HERE IN RIO DE JANEIRO???

And the Web OS Devices gonna come to be selled together??? :-P

Háháháháháháhá... Great!!

Best Regards... B)

The YouTube link has a description that lists a version for Palm OS (I assume a typo) cause it takes you to the webOS page of the current version, just like the Android and iPhone links take you to the current version for each OS.

Not to split hairs but the tropical bird is a cockatoo lol.

Looks like the Angry Birds island is somewhere in the Southern Ocean, kind of between Africa and Antarctica.

Or maybe Rio De Janeiro, where they actually have a statue of christ in the ocean..
I'm just sayin'.

no, he means where the angry birds were in the original games, where the video shows the helicopter taking them FROM.

Oh I can't wait!! (How sad haha). Make sure to vote for WebOS in the OS BOWL!!

So, I just got notice of this from Rovio via an email update on Angry Birds. That update also says that Angry Birds Seasons will get a Valentine's Day update for..."iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android". iPhuking hate being in third-class app purgatory. Ugh. The ninth can't come soon enough!

how about they update the original angry birds game to include all of the features that are found in the iOS version first?. not only does angry birds cost more on webOS than any other platform but palm also gave them a bunch of money when they won that hot apps contest. quite ungreatful of them if you ask me.

why is this even being posted? its being released on ios and android. then after 3-4 months it will come to us.

Every webOS tablet will have a prepaid copy of angry birds RIO!!

Weeeeeeeeeee!

That would be a superb marketing tactic..

Where are the damn pigs? Bird on bird violence seems too avian for me. I'll buy it in a heartbeat though.

The plan is to be on webOS at launch with Angry Birds Rio unless something unexpected comes up. We will get webOS in sync with iOS and Android this week as far as Angry Birdsis concerned + the Valentine's Day update for Seasons will be on webOS as well. And there might be some other webOS announcements in the not too distant future;-)

Thank you Peter, that is great news to hear and I speak for most when I say that we can't wait!

It all makes sense! The rumor about the slate mentioned Angry Birds has been spotted running on the slate! March must be when the slates ship.. :) Put it together..

"We will get webOS in sync with iOS and Android this week as far as Angry Birdsis concerned"

Now you have done it! I'll be obsessively checking for updates.

I almost cried they're all adorable at first then they start raging, looooooooool.
Adorable and Funny, Rovio will never let me down with Angry Birds!

Thank you Rovio!
We appreciate it!

Whats the big hype with angry birds? Its just another game. Played it, finished it, fun while it lasted. End of story.

Angry Birds shows how games for touchscreen devices should be. Easy to learn, hard to master. Ego shooters etc suck on touchscreen because if you ask me you need tactile feedback for those.
