I’m not going to say “I told you so,” but lo and behold the App Catalog has again filled up with apps from the past. Whether we’re observing a continuing server glitch or a glitch in the space-time continuum is up for debate. What’s not up for debate is the sheer number of new and updated apps that appeared in the App Catalog. Ummmm 1st? Lots a updates.
oi icy there was a surge of activity in the suggestion box. its been available in preware, but now come the masses
Maybe if Palm is distributing the SDK 1.4 in advance like they did with 1.3, we are just seeing all the "compatibility" updates...
There is much truth to this comment.
Actually I would say that it is developers updating their apps to help their chances in the Hot Apps contest.
can't we just say its both reasons?
I've noticed there are many times that an app is listed here as being updated, but when checking for updates the app does not show up as needing to be updated.
I think if a developer wants to give an app a "bump" in the "recent app" list, all the developer has to do is change a word or two in the apps description, and re-submit it. The app will appear as an updated app. (event though the app is unchanged, and will not show up as needing to be updated.)
That is currently the case. And unfortunate.
I've noticed the same, you are correct, very unfortunate
"Hate to say a toad-a-so... but a f***in' a toad-a-so!"
Developers who are taking advantage of this loophole (which hopefully will be fixed by Palm) may think they're helping their cause; however in the long run they're going to alienate their existing customer base. I know I hate it when I see an update and open the app page only to find there are none available.
Of course some developers may not be doing this on purpose. They may have a legitimate reason to change their description and therefore they cannot be held responsible for the bug in the app catalog. But if a particular developer's apps keep moving to the top of the list without any updates, I think that's a pretty good indication they're abusing the loophole.
in defense of the loopholers, Palms current system of making sure popular apps are visible is really broken. The algorithm foccuses solely on the overall ratings of the app instead of giving wieght to apps that are downloaded a lot. For example, since 2/1 the helicopter game has bee downloaded almost 24,000 times and is ratef at 4.5 stars with 249 reviiews- impressive. In comparison, PitchPipe has been downloaded 926 times since 1/14 and has a perfect 5 star rating with 20 reviews. The current system suggests that PitchPipe is the most popular app right now, and that app gets the luxury of being displayed at the top of the list. Helicopter game, which clearly is the more popular application isn't even in the top 100 and continues to slide into obscurity on both the Popular and Recent sorting. Until Palm improves the way Hot Apps are given visibility, I can't really blame developers for seeking other ways to promote their products.
Added to this is any app that has been in the catalog long enough to fall victim to the WebOS is doing something weird, I'll post a review of all apps I use with 0 stars. Happens way too often. Many top tier apps are knocked down a point of so for this kind of crap.
You're right, the "popular" list is not accurate currently. That's another problem that will hopefully be fixed. There are many improvements that need to be made to the app catalog. The rating system in general needs a major overhaul.

Agreed - they really need to be using a Bayesian average or something for ratings...
The glitch in time is because of the nuke dropped down a well... ;)
when I go to the list of apps from the "shopping bag" list, there are no apps listed that need updating (with the little down arrow) but if I tap the "update" icon (giftbox) it leads to a button that says "show updates" which when tapped takes me to my list of apps, but with no updates in the list,
does anyone else have this happen, my phone says I have updates that are needed, but when I press the "show updates" button there are no updates to download.
