New in the App Catalog for 04 August 2010 21

by Derek Kessler Thu, 05 Aug 2010 8:54 am EDT

App Catalog AppBookShop may have found some more random subject matter ebooks to push out, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other apps we can talk about:

  • GPS Fix is now available for free in the App Catalog to keep your *cough*Verizon*cough* GPS working just fine.
  • Beantown Sports News is for the Boston sports fan in all of us (you don’t have to admit it).
  • Blackjack21 lets you light up the virtual Blackjack table with your Vegas-honed skills.

As always, there’s plenty more after the break. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.

okie dokie then...

I am SO GLAD for the patch that grays out whatever developers you don't want to have to deal with. Bye Bye AppBookShop. Waste of coding.

I am SO GLAD for the patch that grays out whatever developers you don't want to have to deal with.

So. What

The Patch name is "Hide App Vendors"

.... rushes off to install this patch.

Darn not working on 1.4.5 yet!

you can also do this with the new version of preware :)

i really hate you AppBookShop. and you upwardmobility. you flood our catalog with crap in the hopes that you make a couple bucks. how about this, put up a donate link and we will all donate $1, but in doing so, you agree to never put out another worthless app.

Hey, Upward Mobility is actually putting out something useful. They hire experts in the particular fields so that they can put out a quality, if niche, app. You're not going to find something ridiculous like "Ghost Hunting" from Upward.

Thanks Derek! I appreciate you saying that. I can see why in a small catalog it's frustrating to see so many UM apps. I think this could be helped by a little better search mechanisms. In Apple and Droid stores, you really have to be specifically looking for a topic to find one of our apps.

Let's play "Spot the Bush-ism" haha

Derek, I really appreciate this list of what's new in the app catalog. This lets me scan new applications better than the app catalog itself does, since the "by date" option in the catalog doesn't differentiate between a new app and an update to an existing one.

Perhaps a way to minimize the pain of those who hate particular vendors while not showing favoritism to anyone (or worse yet, censoring the list of apps) would be to sort the list of new apps by vendor, with a secondary sort on app title, rather than just sorting on app title alone. That way, readers that want to skip all of the apps by a certain vendor can skip down in the list easily. For example, high school students who have no need for help with professional certification can skip easily past everything by UpwardMobility, while professionals could read through those offerings as easily as they do today.

You're just trying to make more work for me, aren't you? :P

while the app spam can be annoying, these developers are transitioning their full app portfolios to webOS...which is good. Hopefully more developers do so. While I have no use for their product, there are those that do.

Practically speaking, I've known of a lot of people who "dinged" the Palm App Catalog strictly based on the number of applications. No mention on quality ... just quanitity. Honestly, if we were to have "filler" apps, I'd rather them all be in the same category (books) rather than making everything harder to find.

if I remember correctly the future webOS update (probably 2.0) included updates to the app catalog and I also believe it was referenced that it would in the future it would have categories similar to the Featured Apps template.

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET SKYPE FOR WEBOS!!!!!!!!!

When we have cameras on the front of the phone! That is gonna require new hardware. It would make no sense on the the pre or pixi as they stand. Just think about it.

I think we need the mic API first. I'd be happy with just normal Skype with no video calling.

Not soon. There don't seem to be companies of the name recognition you're talking about making webos apps. I've been hollering for basic stuff that don't even require special apis like epsn, mint, photoshop since the phone was launched. Still nothing. i wouldn't hold my breath on the name apps.

Congrats James on making GPS Fix in the official catalog. It is a great app.

Come on! Ghost Hunting? Seriously?
