New in the App Catalog for 09 April 2010 24
Winding down the week, Friday’s app drop was a touch lighter than those in the preceding days. That’s okay, because there were still new apps and updated apps, both of which is always good things in our books. Sadly, though, those new apps only numbered to eight, while updates at least managed to top a few dozen. Sure, it’s not the kind of figures we got used to from days gone by, but by no means is this the lightest app drop we’ve ever seen. In fact, there were days where we would beg and plead for this kind of action. At least it’s still more than enough to be listed after the break, right?

Those eight did push the UK app catalog to past the 1000 mark though!
w00t!
hey Derek, i've been having a problem downloading and updating apps. About a week ago I downloaded weatherwindow lite or something of the sort and it flashed WOULD You LIKE TO UPDATE TO THE FULL VERSION? So I said fug it, y not? Then after I clicked it it said, "OOPS! NOT YET READY FOR WEB OS" and now I have a ghost icon at the top of my download list and it won't pause or delete or anything, ever heard of this, or know how to get rid of it
I would suggest going to the launcher, finding the app in question, holding down the option button and tapping the app. when prompted, delete it. then download it again and see how that works O.O
Why there is such a difference between the USA and the UK catalog?
The German App Catalog is still down at only 711 apps.
Nothing worth buying and as usual just a load of updates.
I've recently started writing to major companies asking them to write for the Pre & Pixi. Both Amazon (Kindle) and Intuit (Quicken) said they have no current plans for the Pre. I'm still waiting for a response from others. We ALL need to go on the offensive (without being offensive) and ask these companies to write for our favorite platform. Nothing will likely change until we do. Get writing! As to myself, I've recently downloaded the SDK and intend to do some development myself (I'm a programmer). It's time to stop whining and roll up our sleeves!
Shouldn't this be Palm's responsibility? I keep reading "viral," "user promote," "get the word out about Palm." What exactly is Palm doing to make webOS more compelling to developers and mainstream outlets in regards to app development? Releasing the tools is one thing, making it clear the value of webOS is another. That's were Palm, the entity with everything riding on webOS, needs to step up.
Vendors won't care if Palm comes begging. That's what they expect. They want to hear from potential buyers.
Here's the deal: The devs actually producing smartphone software right now are hobbyists and one or two people startups. The only way for them to keep feasibly doing this is if they have a potential revenue stream, and the biggest stream is iPhone...whether they like developing for the platform or not. You can go write an app for the Pre, and sell a few hundred downloads, make yourself several hundred bucks...and you can spend some more time writing one for the iPhone and turn around and make several grand. It's harder to live on several hundred bucks than several thousand bucks. Viral marketing is not intended for development, it's intended to get the word out that the platform is pretty great to use. There are a lot of poor saps out there who think their iPhone is the best thing around because everyone else has one.
If Palm wants professional developers on board, they're going to need to do licensing and royalty deals. They need to pick the cream of the crop, and let developers get those apps bundled with devices or application suites, then let those devs collect royalties. It's pretty much the only way I can think they can make that happen.
Yeah, I agree, but we all need to do whatever we can. Palm needs to sweeten the pot as you mention (but they also need to push out improvements to the SDK FASTER), Verizon needs to keep doing what they're doing (the TV spots, incentives, etc.), and the users need to put pressure on companies to write for the platform.
THE LAST ONE IS VITAL. If enough people walk into a pizzeria and tell them they won't be returning because they don't use real cheese, they'll start using real cheese.
If enough people go into a grocery store and ask a manager for a specific product, they'll get that product.
Bitch, whine and moan, but SAY SOMETHING. One of the rules in Business 101 is that for every person who writes a letter of complaint, there are 1,000 who won't bother but feel the same way. If 100 people write to Intuit and ask for Quicken, they'll get the message. But make sure to actually buy the product when it comes out! And please stop bitching about a capable application that costs less than $10. The equivalent PC program would cost you 4 times as much! As mentioned above, programmers need to make a living too...
IF YOU DON'T ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT, YOU WON'T LIKELY GET IT! (Sorry for the shouting, but I'm getting tired of people relying on others to get something done!)
Major corporations have little interest in developing for any mobile platform right now, because the market is too fragmented and unstable. Trust me. I'm a professional mobile developer, and haven't had an actual mobile project in 2 years, and the only leads I've had are for Windows Mobile and embedded projects. All my work is desktop and web stuff. The only serious production in most mobile/smartphone markets is from startups and hobbyists.
The general consensus is that "mobile is where it's at" right now. And Intuit just revoked the license that Landware was holding for Pocket Quicken, so I refuse to believe they don't have something planned for mobile platforms.
Fans saved Jericho by bombarding the network with peanuts. I don't recommend the same course of action here, but we need to be vocal and we need to be persistent. Show your phone to your friends, compile a list of the apps you'd like and ask for them (or write them)!
Are we ever going to get mainstream apps? USA Today, Amazon, eBay, bank apps (Chase, B of A), Wallstreet Journal, ESPN Sports Center???
No. Not in my opinion. I've been asking for them since launch. We haven't seen many and most of the stuff released are novelty stuff. My guess is until palm makes a phone that sells like gangbusters they won't see a reason.
I say I say tweed got an update to 1.6, I says i says.
woohoo!
this update made monopoly, sims, and the rest of the EA Games available in CANADA!!!
From Germany to Canada: Welcome to the club!
would sure love me some flash!!
So would Palm. Palm expected Adobe to be done with it months ago. Flash is the property of Adobe, not Palm. Might not matter though, if HTML5 catches on better than it has.
I have not downloaded one single app since the paid apps came to the UK. As usual it is just full of utter useless crap. Are there any UK developers out there or have Palm made such a mess that there are only a few developers outside of the US?
No Ebay, no Skype, no UK travel apps, London Tube etc etc (London Tube app was advertised on Palms UK website but we cant get it)
I am fed up with seeing quotes and soft porn apps and how many calculator apps do we need?
I came from a platform that had the info i wanted at my finger tips and was told i would have the same with Palm. Life moves fast, don't miss a thing hey. Well if its news, traffic and travel info you will miss it all but you can get soft porn, quotes from dead people and yeah, other platforms may have a few thousand crap apps but at least they have some decent apps to go with them. How have Palm let it get this bad?
"How have Palm let it get this bad?"
I think they listened to people on these boards that said they should let anything from brighthouse and other garbage apps in. That and they didn't sell enough phones.
