New in the App Catalog for 12 March 2010 18

by Derek Kessler Sat, 13 Mar 2010 10:29 am EST

App Catalog While the relatively short new list from yesterday might be dominated by a new “WordPegs” series that melds the quotation app with the wallpaper app (thankfully even the parts are more than the sum of some others in those maligned categories), there are still some gems in the list. Notably among them, the worshipped travel guide Zagat, in this instance Zagat To Go from Handmark. That’s not all, as homebrew graduate bubek has released a feature-packed version of the popular TimeTracker app, christening it TimeTracker Pro. Of course, two apps and some quotation wallpapers don’t say it all, so head on after the break to see the rest.

New apps:

  • New Journalism, $1.25, by Bowden Apps: A collection of quotes from notable ’60’s and ‘70’s journalists like Hunter S. Thompson, Truman Capote, amd P.J. O'Rourke.
  • TimeTracker Full, $9.90, by reinform AG: Record your working time, annotate it with notes, graph by time and location, and more.
  • TravelGuide Pro, $2.49, by MetaViewSoft: Learn everything you need to know about where you are.
  • VirtualCrossGolf, $1.99, by omoco: Play golf on courses that you and other players around the world have created.
  • WordPegs - Business, Free, by Pressed Apps: More than one hundred fifty businss quotations displayed as random wallpapers.
  • WordPegs - Creativity, Free, by Pressed Apps: Randomly display more than 150 quotations on creativity as your phone’s wallpaper.
  • WordPegs - Motivation, Free, by Pressed Apps: More than one hundred fifty motivational quotation wallpapers to randomly cycle through.
  • WordPegs - Old Testament, Free, by Pressed Apps: 150+ quotes and quotations wallpapers from the Old Testament of the bible.
  • WordPegs - Words to Live by, Free, by Pressed Apps: Inspirational quotes and phrases to be randomly displayed as your wallpaper.

Is wordpegs the new brighthouse?

I don't think that five apps is enough to make such a judgment.

Well, they are free, which is better than charging the $1.99 which B' Labs does.

So no, wouldn't say so, yet...

Wordpegs, from Pressed Apps, is definitely not the new Brighthouse. The developer is a friend of mine, who used those apps as an exercise to learn webOS development.

He has a number of other apps in development which are more than simple wallpaper apps. So be nice and welcome one more talented developer to our ranks ;-)

Well that's all that brighthouse started with.

If you're using Preware, check out QT and the demo apps.. Gives some examples of the potential there, and there is LOTS of potential. Hope it makes its way to becoming a first class citizen via the PDK.

Doh

doh

Great! Just what we need. Two more developers offering "quotes" for sale. Now we just need a few more offering recipes, a few more offering public domain books, and a few more offering simple web-front ends to websites. Ug

People actually buy this stuff?????

BTW: http://wikiquote.org http://wikibooks.org http://www.gutenberg.org

EXACTLY!

So is timetracker $9.99 or $9.90 ?

$9.90, actually.

Zagat -- That's more like it. I'll pay for decent apps.

Glad to see Zagat. A mainstream company. It's what Webos needs. I don't eat out much so i don't need it and $9.99 is steep but it's the same as the iphone app so i fine with it.

The rest of the apps. I got little interest in those sorts of apps. overall they need a major step up in terms of providing mainstream apps.

Good day to you all! The WordPegs apps are mine. These quotation collections are the result of a huge amount of work I did on another venture. They were not ripped off wholesale from any source. I discovered that there are only about 150 quotes of consequence on any topic, and here they are.

There is also a lot of attention paid to good typography and layout in the conversion to graphical images.

All this for the low, low price of free :-) I'm using these apps myself so I'm sure some others will enjoy them.

There is exactly one more on the way and that's it for the quote apps, I promise! As my good friend Shane said, there are some interesting apps on the way.

Sorry if I sounded venomous about the whole "quotes" "apps" thing. I guess the Brighthouse Labs stuff just has me on edge, especially when it appeared yet two more developers were jumping on that bandwagon.

The fact that you are releasing them for free and restricting the number of apps makes you "OK" in my book :) Thanks for your support of WebOS

That's OK. I've been reading pre central for some months so I'm aware of the mood and where you are coming from.

I'm a huge fan of WebOS and want to see great apps too.

Any travel apps for the UK, News apps for the UK, Tube app for the UK anyone. Come on, our app store is rubbish. My GF has just downloaded all the apps i want on pre to her Iphone. My patience are running very thin with the Pre.
