New in the App Catalog for 13 April 2010 29

by Derek Kessler Wed, 14 Apr 2010 9:39 am EDT

App Catalog With all the potential doom and gloom surrounding Palm right now, it’s always nice to be able to say that there is some good news to be had. And if anything qualifies as good news, it’s apps, right? Of course it is. And while we’re not ones to say “the more the better” when it comes to apps (though we will to sales numbers, profits, and the like), right now we’ll take what we can get. Though quality never hurts. The new app drop for yesterday didn’t have anything particularly amazing, though at least it wasn’t overflowing with less-than-desirables. It’s all listed for you, after ye olde break.

New apps:

  • airG Chat, Free, by airG: Chat and play games with friends and new people around the world.
  • Artist Series Wallpaper, Free, by Palm: Backgrounds to match your Pixi Artist Series back.
  • Bouncey, $1.99, by Inglorious Apps: Clear all the blue rings, and avoid the red rings, and do it all with only two shots.
  • Electrical Calculator, $4.99, by Ovlite: Quick and easy electrical calculations.
  • Gas Tankstellen, Free, by Robert Mazner: (German) Find nearby gas stations with LPG and CNG.
  • Hammz Hotteez Babes, $0.99, by Hammz Hotteez: More than 60 photos of beautiful women in bikinis and lingerie.
  • Robert Burns Quotes, $1.99, by Brighthouse Labs: Quotes from the Scottish poet and lyricist.
  • Robert Burton Quotes, $1.99, by Brighthouse Labs: Read the words of the English scholar and vicar at Oxford University.
  • TMaps NY Closest Subway, $0.99, by GeezerNetwork: Find the closest New Yokr City subway station.
  • TrackMyWork-Full, $1.99, by Klaus Reger: Log your hours working daily, on projects, during your free time, and more.
  • treiNS @0700, Free, by HJiT Consulting: Get real-time track data for Dutch railways.

Nice to see the Application Department is still working.

Please port OPERA MINI - anyone?????
Plus nice to see other countries apps. 5 dollars for a calculator is an atrocity.

More quotes! Why? The app store gets worse and worse.

hey man, have some respect for the developers! A lot of work goes into all that copy n pasting! The 6 year olds doin it must have bleeding little fingers

lol, just wet myself :D

Why? because Palm doesn't censor/restrict app production. Even Apple, which does, has a70+ pages of Brighthouse apps. Quit your crying.

nobody gives a shit what apple does when all you have is a Pre. These shitty apps make tore down this phone and ruined it. no wonder they can't sell them.

So, along those same lines, would you say that the mere availability of 87 octane gas "ruins" a car that requires 91 octane gas? If you don't like an app then don't buy it!

Nearest subway looks great.

Bad sign, Brighthouse is only up to BUR___ alphabetically for quotes?

They have 70+ pages of "Apps" in the Apple catalog. They'll keep going and going...

They are not apps, they're data sets. Love to give them their own section. I can think of several appropriate icons if Palm needs help.

I don't disagree in theory, but one thing which sets Palm apart from Apple is that they don't have some obscure app approval method (which doesn't keep out crap like Brighthouse, just stuff Apple doesn't like for one reason or another).

We all know Brighthouse sucks, do we have to have a litany of people repeating that every time there's an App drop?

The thing is, okay, Palm doesn't censor stupid apps.

But why does PreCentral report them like they're "real" apps? They're a huge load of crap, and while PreCentral doesn't need to say that actively, Derek can just quietly drop Bughouse Labs off the list.

Where do you draw the line?

PreCentral isn't getting paid to list the apps, are they? They can draw the line wherever they want to. We know for a fact that some (all?) of the guys at PreCentral think the Bughouse Labs quote apps are stupid and excessive, so why not start there? If there's no need to go farther, nobody's going to force them.

They're actually up to the R's - they go by full title, not last name.

I think they go by first name, which means we are nearing the end of the R's, S's are due up next!

I'm sorry, but this Brighthouse labs stuff needs to be thrown out of the App Catalog and never allowed back in. In my opinion, terrible applications shouldn't be allowed in, even if that means Palm takes a huge hit on Apps. It's quite clear that Palm will likely never catch Android or the Iphone when it comes to the sheer number of apps available, but if the Apps that are available are things like Dropbox, LogMeIn, Docs2Go, Firefox-Mobile, etc... then people would always be quick to note that fact when discussing the different platform app stores. At this point Palm should stop offering large cash sums to contest winners and just start hiring app developers to make apps for their platform. I think most people that develop 'apps would be more than happy to take 25k to port their excellent app over to the catalog, and in exchange Palm would keep a larger percent of the App sales, think 70/30 in Palm's favor. That way there is large incentive for talented App developers to get something out on the Palm platform and Palm can argue that they have the apps that matter (which for the record, they don't come anywhere near currently). I was very depressed when I left my 3GS for the Pre Plus because I wanted Verizon, and discovered how awful the Palm catalog truly is...

Do you really think the average smartphone consumer looks beyond the number of apps to the quality of the apps when making a choice about which phone to get? I don't think they do, personally.

I get sick of seeing hundreds of quotes apps just as much as the next guy, but why should Palm throw them out if they're selling? Some people clearly want that stuff, and Palm is obliging them. Besides, the only people who get annoyed about these things are those that have to weed through the quote apps to find other stuff in these app updates. How many people is that compared to the overall user base?

Just say, "Palm has higher quality Applications". It doesn't matter if it's only technically correct, or if there is 3 caveats or so thrown in. If palm launches a nice phone this Summer/Fall, and fixes some of the low hanging bugs in their OS. All the while pushing for these changes in the app store, they can make a huge value/ease argument. Beef up backups and maybe add some drag and drop cloud-based syncing similar to Microsoft's 'Kin' and you have a phone that by Winter this year competes very hard.

ummm i noticed that a couple of apps are listed at 99.00 bucks up here in the great white north.. pllls tell me this is a mistake lol

Am I reading it right that the unit converter is really $99 ( or

Maybe it outputs the proper quantity of currency when it completes the calculation.

Apple may have buckets of crap apps but they have buckets of better apps than Palm can show off. More quotes. more calculators and more games, dear oh dear Palm, sort this mess out.

yep. pointing out that apple has shit too doesn't make palms shit roses.

Ok who has the best messenger app and were is it for free. I mean no nimbuzz, mundu, ebuddy and agile what the hell.
