New in the App Catalog for 18 March 2010 32
Hoooo nelly, Appible is on a roll. Seemingly running low on single public domain books worth selling, they’re now bundling them together in author packages and selling those at a discount. Which I’m okay with, especially in relation to selling a single book that’s available for free to the entire public. But enough of brow-beating a company that copies Wikipedia entries for their app descriptions, let’s talk about what’s new. What really jogged the old memory wheel for yesterday was the appearance of BugMe!, a classic Palm OS app that has now made its way to webOS. If you’re not familiar, BugMe! lets you jot down a note and set it as a reminder - far more useful than trying to enter a note in a calendar entry with an alarm. BugMe! is just one of several new apps (including another batch of test preps) and the always long list of updated apps - it's after the break, of course.
New apps:
- AP, CLEP and SAT II Biology, $3.99, by Upward Mobility: Prepare yourself for the AP, CLEP, and SAT II biology exams with 175 questions and answers.
- AP, CLEP and SAT II Psychology, $4.99, by Upward Mobility: One hundred eight one questions and answers to prep for the AP, CLEP, and SAT II Psychology exams.
- Best Damn Dictionary, Free, by Paduraru.com: Online dictionary with auto-complete and synonyms.
- BugMe! Notes and Reminders, $0.99, by Electric Pocket: Jot down notes and set an alarm for that note as a reminder.
- David Copperfield, $0.99, by Appible: Charles Dickens’ quasi-autobiographical novel, a story of self-cultivation and one of his most revered works.
- ITIL V3 Exam Prep, $3.99, by Upward Mobility: 100 quiz questions to help you prep for the ITIL project manager certification.
- Locle, Free, by Appsie: Share your location with friends when you’re in the neighborhood.
- Strategy Consulting Interview Prep, $8.99, by Upward Mobility: 256 questions to prepare you for management consulting interviews.
- The Edgar Rice Burroughs Collection, $3.50, by Appible: A collection of books written by Edgar Rice Burroghs, including Tarzand of the Apes and The Land That Time Forgot.
- The Leo Tolstoy Collection, $3.50, by Appible: A package of novels by Leo Tolstoy, including Anna Karenina and War and Peace.
- The Louisa May Alcott Collection, $3.50, by Appible LLC: Five of Louisa May Alcott’s most famous novels, including Little Women and Rose in Bloom.
- Winter Babes (Keys), Free, by tEarn Media: Race against a search bot to identify the women on the 2010 Winter Olympics.

So now, not only do we have a bunch of spam apps, we're also recycling and reusing them. Sweet! This will get our app count up!
If I knew the first thing about programming I'd make those same eBooks but free.
someone should package every single one of those books n release it for FREE on the app catalog
I thought about it.
But then /I/ would be the new spammer.
Strategy Consulting Interview Prep for $8.99, What?, I guess now we can all quit college.
Snow Report was also updated yesterday!
Derek,
What about LaunchPoint Speed Dial?
at last palm will loose its customers foe not having good apps. All free apps r shits n all paid r also shit
Ouch, the grammar master just slammed Palm and all the developers who have actually taken the time to produce great products! Let us all reflect on the wisdom and insight of this post...
@jameshbhai You really haven't been looking at the App Catalog in the last three months. There are some fantastic apps in there. I guess troll thumbs make it hard to type on the tiny keyboard? :P
Thanks jameshbhai,
It's nice to know all my months of development on the OSK are appreciated by people.
We developers will take your carefully crafted, constructive criticism to heart and want to work much harder to satisfy you.
Great, now I'm dripping with sarcasm.
Hehe another adoring fan of us devs. And if you're plagued by dripping sarcasm stains, a little salt and vinegar can wash them out. >:)
"Strategy Consulting Interview Prep, $8.99"
Your kidding right?? Or you just use your free browser and look at one of the 1000s of websites that help you with interview questions...
Theory is that if you are going to interview a $120,000/year job, you'd be willing to pay for specialized interview prep. It's not a big market, but undergrads and MBAs with a management consulting focus find it useful.
I can't see how business school and undergrad wouldn't be a lot of prep for interviewing. What shitty school are these people going to? It's not like they don't discuss interviewing. but hey whatever. it's their money.
Pretty much every school actually.
As someone who has had to do some interviewing (onn both sides) you wouldn't believe what some folks do in interviews. Gum chewing, casual (or even sloppy) attire, no preparation for basic questions, exaggeration or outright lying on their resumes that they can't even back up with mediocre quality b.s.
Not all schools even offer that sort of advice, and most students don't pursue it even when it is available.
Sloppy attire... I think I wore a "San Jose Sharks" t-shirt to my last job interview. My feeling is, if the interviewer can't look past my tie (or lack thereof), I probably wouldn't want to work there. And yes, I got the job, t-shirt and all.
As for prepping for interviews, my job as an interviewer is to blast past all that bs. My goal is to have a technical interview which you are very unlikely to prepare for. Interviewers, at least for professional jobs, want to see how well you can think on your feet and delight in asking questions that make you ill at ease, especially if your experience is limited.
I wouldn't hire anyone who wasn't as serious about getting the job as I was about hiring. What you wear demonstrates that, no matter what the day to day dress code may be. The firm I work for is very small, and the prospective employee pool is very, very large. If you can't show up dressed professionally for an interview, how can I think you would show up dressed professionally for an important meeting with a client? That's what an interview is, an important meeting with someone you hope is going to pay you a lot of money for your skills.
If you want to get hired in THIS economy, you better bring straight A's across the board or you better have a skillset that no one can match (in which case the first question is why are you unemployed?)
To get back to the original point, most young people these days (and I don't say this as an old fart, I'm 30), especially the ones right out of school, have no concept of how to interview or how to act like a professional. Part of this is inexperience, which is understandable to a point, but part of it is the growing culture of self-entitlement and the absurd coddling some kids get. They're coddled, clueless and self-absorbed and no employer is going to want to deal with that.
Case interviews are a totally different beast. Nothing like a regular interview, and takes a lot of practice. Almost any MBA who does them will tell you that's the case. I designed the app based on what a review I would have liked to have in year 1 of the MBA. By year 2, most folks are more polished and it's a review.
Wobble Words 2.0 is also out, must have missed it in all the spammy apps. ;) New features include pass & play, 5x5 board, trophy case, 1min timer option, two new themes and other goodies. Demo video and catalog link are here: http://gobico.com/
Actually, it seems to be missing from the PreCentral Recent "Official Apps" link altogether... what's up with that?
I wish bug me will come out with their full bug me version, where you can use your screen as a canvas.
For all the talk about some of the crappy apps, I think people need to remember that in pretty much any market, msot of what's out there is either going to be crap or stuff you don't need. The Apple and Android catalogs are no ifferent, nor are most stores. Target, Wal-Mart (as exmaples, I'm not advocating shopping either place), supermarkets or even most specialty shops. 99% of what you find in any shop is crap or not something you need. An app store is going to be no different.
+1
Apple has some pretty rubbish stuff too but it also has some very very very good apps from lots of the top name companies from around the World. It also has some of the top radio stations apps, travel apps, news apps etc etc. We have.....none of those or anything near as good. The US doesn't have them so when paid apps hit the UK i doubt it will be any different.
Another user who hasn't really really dug through the App Catalog. There are a lot of excellent apps in there, some of which are direct ports of top iPhone apps. Plus, the Facebook app is officially better than the iPhone version.
I can't wait for paid apps to hit the UK with all this rubbish in it.
The apps released for this phone are utterly uninteresting. Wanna know why nobody is buying this phone? Crappy apps is one of several reasons. Apple may have crap apps but they've got thousands more good apps already and a ton are free. They need to stop making this spam or allowing it in the catalog. i don't care about some crusade for openness. Close the door to tha spam apps.
So many "bad apps" trolls today. Did you guys get a group rate?
Why on earth wouldn't Palm be concentrating on loss of functionality Apps? Right now I can name multiple losses in the functionality of my phone from going from a Palm Treo 700p (and I may be going back until things look better!). My categories (important with over 3,000 contacts on my desktop Palm) have disspeared on my handset, I no longer know if the person I'm texting is on Verizon, I no longer can record audio (I mean really!! This is BASIC stuff) or record phone calls! The list is rather large. I have seven days to return my Pre, and it looks likely I will!
i didn't find any good apps. All crappy n quotes. If anyone says fcbook in iphone isn't better than pre its wrong. Atleast they have got chat n notification. N this tiny keyboard is shit. I wish i would have gone to htc now im stuck with it for 24 months
Thank you very much..
