New in the App Catalog for 21 December 2009 24
Strangely, the only new stuff in the App Catalog was old stuff - nineteen updates, but no new apps. So we held steady from Friday’s number of 843 apps, but as you may have seen from the Smartphone Round Robin videos posted last week and this week, that number is around double that in the Windows Mobile Marketplace. Of course, we’re still well behind the iPhone and Android app stores, and a few thousand behind BlackBerry App World, but then again Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein expects “several thousand” new apps with the release of the Ares development platform and the App Catalog’s emergence from beta. In the meantime, we’ve got a list of the updates, and it’s after the break for your perusal.

zzzzz.... wake me up when some good apps start coming out.
holiday sale!
more stocks is 2.99
airhockey is .99
more stocks or top stocks?
Definitely MoreStocks. It does everything that Top Stocks does and more. And for cheaper!
Have no fear, the Ares Project is here! It will enable people who don't know how to write code to develop great apps. (snicker)
ZZZZZ... is exactly right :(
meh.
Most of the time, updates are not really updates. I see an app listed here as updated, but when I check tha app catalog update page, there aren't any of my installed apps listed.
I think the devs just change a word or two in the description, (or something like that), in order to get bumped to the top of the recent listing. Why else would an app listed as having been updated, not show up in the installed app update page?
...and BTW - there is a special place in hell for developers like Brighthouse, and dijit, Crap-apps at their best! (...worst.)
Check out this new patch that "hides" crap vendors. It can't get rid of it (the developer certainly tried) but it dims them to the point that you can barely see them. Makes a huge difference

Available in the app catalog
I don't get these updates for some reason... I still don't have the "new apps" from like 4 or 5 days ago... WTF? How can I make my Pre see the new apps?
Derek wrote "double that in the Windows Mobile Marketplace" as if to imply there are more Pre apps than WinMob apps. What a stupid comment! Even for a Pre-focused site to write this is beyond idiotic. There are many thousands of apps for WinMob. Tens of thousands. The fact that you don't have to go to a vendor controlled store to get them is a plus.
Geez, the lengths PreCentral has to go to in order to find something positive to say about the (Cr)app Catalog would be humerous if it wasn't such a sad commentary on the state of the Pre ecosystem.
And JR expects
Sounds like you are on the naughty list!
You obviously didn't understand the context of his comment so we'll forgive you for your unnecessary rant.
Simmer down Ebenezer.
sounds like he wasn't hugged enough as a child :oP
No, I can say I was not hugged enough as a child but don't act like that. I think he/she is having a personality conflict and does not know how to handle it. So taking it out on this article.
Instead of sitting around here complaining about the lack of apps and the quality of apps, how about writing to your favorite app authors and companies and requesting that they build Pre versions of their software. For example, take a look at the list of Times Top 10 iPhone Apps for 2009
Tweetie 2
Yelp (Pre has)
Slacker
FlightTrack Pro
Mint
SlingPlayer Mobile
The Small Chair
RunKeeper
Photoshop.com Mobile
Locavore
And then write to those companies asking for a Pre version. They're not going to do development unless they see a demand and their not going to come to PreCentral of Palm's forums to look for those demands.
Don't like the apps already in the catalog - Write a review, e-mail the authors, tell them how they can improve their products, give them some good old fashioned consumer feedback!
The reality is that there are VERY few products on these Best Of and Top Apps lists that the Pre doesn't already have some comparable app (e.g. Twitter apps, Sports apps, Translators, Search (Yelp), Video (Youtube), Amazon, Streaming, Stocks, Weather, Password, Wiki, Tasks, etc.,.). The core categories are covered. The quality needs to come up in some cases and some gaps filled, but it's not going to get done without users asking for more.
Comparable apps rock! Maybe the new webOS ad campaign should be "There's a Comparable App for That!"
Great idea! I have been holding off on getting the Pre because (1) they do not have some key apps that are on PalmOS - like Docs2Go and (2) hoping that AT&T will get GSM Pre in first quarter of 2010.
While I'm waiting, I'll look at what I currently use on my Centro and send letters to each of those vendors. I had only done it so far for two of them. I'll go back and send notes to them all.
Maybe if we ALL do that... the big companies will start looking at webOS.
Being proactive instead of reactive.
Thanks for the idea!
Air Hockey is "updated" but I cannot update on my phone... grr... was hoping for a better experience...
it wasn't updated, just a holiday sale.
2009 is almost over and we don't have Flash-mini yet.
I know flash was suppose to be out for the pre before the end of the year.. still waiting maybe we can hear something soon? I dont like any of these apps more and more useless apps where are the banking apps ... realestate apps... video apps... webchat apps... tick toc for the new year.. lets make a wish this christmas and newyear resolution for devs. Maybe intresting things will come out of CES.. so many what ifs.. Well still love the pre just waiting as usual
So "several thousand" means something like 3,974 from Brighthouse Labs and 26 from others?
devs with 1.3.5.......is ruby blowing smoke? A yes or no wouldn't violate that nda would it?
