New in the App Catalog for 21 January 2010 20

by Derek Kessler Fri, 22 Jan 2010 10:01 am EST

App Catalog I swear, Palm is playing some sort of Jedi mind tricks on me, because last night when I hit the sack the newest apps were dated as being "yesterday," as in Wednesday. When I got up this morning, not only where there more apps under "older" (i.e. before Thursday), but there were apps under yesterday (Thursday) as well that sure as heck weren’t there yesterday. Am I losing my mind? Well... that is a distinct possibility, assuming that it hasn’t already been lost. Yeah, I saw the same happen. Annoying, since my updated apps went straight to the 'Yesterday' section.

Speaking of which, feel free to try out the new and improved Flickr Addict Lite, which now gives you the full set of features for a while for $free ;-)

I saw this as well.

On a separate note, two things related to the catalog:

1) what would be really helpful is if Palm created a "release notes" section on the app catalog so you could see what is new in an updated application. I see updates and unless a reviewer writes somthing in their review related to the update or the developer chooses to write it in their overall description, you can't tell what's new with an app. Instead, you have to hunt around in the app to see what's changed.

2) When you click on updates, you have to scroll through the list and see which apps are updating (and if you have a lot that's painful). Atleast when you used to be able to go through the Update App, it would list which ones had updates.

The app catalog page has a "Developer Home" link at the bottom of each app page that should go to the developer's web page and hopefully developers would post their release notes there. For my GeoStrings app (which was updated today), the change log is displayed on my web page.

And for people who already own my app and download the update, I display my change log immediately when the app runs for the first time after the update. Also they can view the change log on the app's help screen.

But I agree it would be nice if there was a "change log" or "release notes" section directly on the app catalog page.

glad to see no apps from djit :D

I never get when apps like Need for Speed are moved to the top of the list as if they were updated, but the version says the last available version of 20.0.28 and the phone does not see it as an update. Anyone else ever notice this?

I was just going to say the same thing. My guess is they updated the description or something else. So the date now shows 1/20, while the version remains 20.0.28.

Your probably right and that's kind of cheap way for developers to keep there apps at the top of the list. Update the description or something

It really only happens with high-profile/expensive apps. Palm is trying to make more money buy constantly pushing them to the top.

I'm pretty sure it happens for any app that updates any small text field in its description, whether it's $10 or free.

I noticed in the last "new apps" thread someone was asking what apps people wanted. So I figured I'd list apps that I think would be useful.

1) Any addictingly fun, simple, cheap, good looking game. The iPhone has plenty of these. Examples: DoodleJump, FlightControl, GeoDefense.

2) Shazam/Midomi

3) The Bar Code App (scans barcodes lets you know how much it costs online).

4) A GOOD email program (sorry Palm, your email client sucks, especially thanks to "synergy" which forces me to import all these unnecessary contacts).

5) An IM program (sorry Palm, but I HATE your IM client, you have synergy to thank for that again)

6) Apps to randomly choose something from a list. Like Urbanspoon.

7) An app that can randomly suggest something to do nearby.

That's pretty much all I can think of. There's actually not that many "must have apps" that we don't have already. Though of course a lot of the apps we have now need a lot of work. For example the Facebook app for webOS sucks hardcore compared to the FB app for the iPhone (well at least Android's FB app sucks too). Runkeeper on the iPhone is better than the jogging apps on webOS...

I thought I saw a app tittled "I-keyboard" or something like that a while ago but when I look for it I can not find it, anyone know anything? I do believe it was to be a screen keyboard.

QR deCODEr... this is one of the things i have been waiting for. i don't understand why the description says that the decoding can not be done locally and has to be sent off to an on line service.

I'd pay for a nice barcode reader on the Pre.

For real. This is big. The fact that they can make an app that decodes QR barcodes by sending the pic to a server is pretty crazy. A typical barcode should be much easier to do this with, right??

It's just neat that they can do that without the camera APIs. Microphone APIs provide for much bigger projects, tho.

CAN THE MICROPHONE APIs come on, please?

Re spacemansporks webOS app wish list, here's my wish list:

1) Documents To Go (I read on PreCentral a while ago that it's in the works. I sure hope so)

2) Zagat To Go

3) All the Splash Data apps (I haven't loaded Classic; I'd like them in webOS)

4) A good To-Do note app that can be used both on a computer and the pre and be synched digitally

5) The same bar code app spaceman mentions that allows you to scan a bar code and get competitive prices

6) Good interactive city transit maps for major cities

7) Apps for photographers (depth of field, etc.)

Does anyone know if these are in the works?

I don't know about the others, but your #7 has been sort of taken care of for quite some time with Depth of Field Calculator: http://www.precentral.net/app-gallery/app-catalog/dof-calculator.

I believe I found a typo/error in this list. The app "TealSpeed Dialer and Launcher" for $1.99 is incorrect. I believe it is $4.99, I know this because I'm interested in that app & I got all excited that the price had changed so I went to go possibly purchase it. Upon finding the app in the App Catalog, I released the mistake in this post, since it still was listed as $4.99 not $1.99. Anyways thought I should chime in & point that out.

i'm hoping coming out of beta will bring a lot more apps from websites and businesses that i'm familiar with. Or that are of a high quality.

is anyone having the mega problems with Need For Speed crashing every time you play it?! it seems like this issue is being ignored by EA as there are countless people commenting on the app saying that the game is no longer working. it sucks since it was a $10 app.

no news..

My nfsu doesnt work either. Im so pissed... 10 DOLLARS

...I want good facebook app :( im a heavy facebook user... would like to see iPhones equivalente here in webos!
